  • In our latest video Paul explains the best way to clean your Brompton bicycle when it's dirty after a ride. Simple easy steps which we hope will explain how and why.
    We will be undertaking separate videos for cleaning road bikes, touring bikes and MTB's as there are slightly different things we do with each and these will form part of a series.
    Bike: Brompton P6R ‪@bromptonbicycle‬
    In the video Paul used:
    - A Hand Pump Garden Sprayer from ‪@toolstationltd‬ (we have the 9L Hawksmoor pressure sprayer)
    - Finish Line Super Bike Wash ‪@FinishLineUSA‬
    - TF2 Ultimate Lubricant Spray
    - Finish Line Wet Bike Lubricant ‪@FinishLineUSA‬
    - A Rag (in this case an old T-shirt was perfect)
    - Soft bristled brush (from an old dustpan and brush set)
    Please check out our other Brompton Videos (with more coming soon):

    Brilliant idea to use a garden spray! Only ever seen bike mechanics using hoses, even high pressure ones. But the water gets into everything. Thanks.

    Useful reminder about using the garden sprayer, I also use just a simple hand sprayer it's surprising how much pressure they will deliver although they only hold a small volume of water. Not sure I agree about putting any sort of lubricant near the seat-post clamp. It's easy to contaminate the inner sleeve that clamps the seat post resulting in seat post 'creep'

    • @veloworks9266
      @veloworks9266  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, thanks for watching. Great idea about a hand held sprayer. I’ve not experienced any ‘creep’ myself and been doing it for years but I only use a tiny amount and from experience it’s better to have some lubrication in this area than none. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling 🙌

    I must say I have always taken my wheels off to clean my Brompton. I also use connex reusable quick links so I take the chains off and clean them away from the bike. You really can’t get into all the nooks and crannies without doing so. I also understand many people are not mechanically inclined to do this, but it’s the only way to be sure. I also don’t use fancy soap. Just simply use dish soap with a bucket of water and a sponge. soft brush to clean off mud/ debris.

    • @veloworks9266
      @veloworks9266  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching the video and your comments. As we say in the video as part of a full service we get into all the nooks and crannies to clean it with the bike being fully stripped down. When using the bike throughout the year regularly this is the best way to keep it clean as we’ve shown.

    Get these pressure washers, those 5 liter garden ones at the Action. They last a few years. The Gardena (brand) version is a bit more but better quality. This one will last for years. No expensive cleaners /degreasers for me. Regular dish detergent, several brushes and this pump. Oh, and ceramic coating for my Brompton…. Makes cleaning a lot easier. I never spray my entire bike, to many spots for water to get into. A wet cloth after carefull rinsing does a lot. Dry thoroughly afterwards!!!

    The first thing I did when getting mine, was to give it all a full autopolish ( and remove all the useless tapes from the factory, for better protection against scratches!! After two folds one tape was worn through to the paint!).

    Watching this I realise I am a tad too rough on my bike and TBH I have always pre-rinsed and rinsed off with a domestic hose. To be fair, always on light spray setting. I'll do better from now on - thanks for the advice.

    Thanks for the video..... when cleaning the Brompton turn it upside down so it is on its seat and handle bars . much easier to access other areas..... in a perfect world a Bicycle stand is a good investemt to get it up to waist and chest height so you can clean the bike efficiently and quickly... .. ( a must have investment if you have enough space and money ) or an appropriate table or stool etc ... All the best

      Hi thanks for watching and commenting. The purpose of the video is to show anyone how they can clean their bike the simplest way. We run a professional workshop and have multiple stands but not everyone watching the video would have a stand which is why we set the bike up this way. I would not recommend turning this bike upside down to clean it as the shifters protrude the handlebars so they are likely to get damaged or snapped (best case scenario - scratched). Also we have an expensive saddle on this Brompton so wouldn’t want to damage it unnecessarily 👍 finally If you turn a Brompton upside down to wash it water will run into the seat tube and find it’s way into the frame and sit in the frame and cause rust. Hope that helps 👍

    • @Lady_Brompton
      @Lady_Brompton ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh no! Then you'll absolutely hate my video of me cleaning my brompton upside down in a bath! 😂 To be honest, there's no damage to the saddle (but I have a super uncool padded granny saddle anyway) or the shifters cus I covered them with a towel and then a bin bag. I just put my lady Brompton to dry with the tubes open facing the ground and gravity worked it's magic. 😅 But I should invest in a professional stand - thanks for the video!

    Some form of bike stand is highly desirable, if not essential - the Brompton can exploit its open-ended seat tube for this.

    I never put lubricant on the seatpost. It needs to be dry or you will risk having it lower when riding as the clamp can easily slip.

    What’s your opinion on waxing the chain ?

    • @veloworks9266
      @veloworks9266  ปีที่แล้ว

      It just depends on the conditions that you ride. Depending on the wax, it can be really good in drier climates and therefore a good option. In the UK sometimes we need a bit of a heavier lubricant just to make sure all elements of the chain is protected because wax doesn’t always find its way to where you need it.

  • @GeneralKato

    Sorry to say but to me this isn’t cleaning the bike. It’s a rinse-off…mud and grease everywhere afterwards?! Cleaning degreases, after you grease again! You forgot to rinse the inner part of the fenders, under the seatpost, and so many other places.
