It happens to a lot of actors. It happened to Mark Hamill, after Star Wars. He found a second career in voice acting where he could act and be different from Luke Skywalker because his face wasn’t on the screen. He could so fully communicate a character through his voice and then people check the cast list and are like, “No way, that was him!”

That's just what I was thinking, the funny character Carlton Banks obscured Alfonso Ribeiro without giving him a chance of getting away from it, only recently I realized Alfonso Ribeiro is a terrific dancer and actor who would have deserved a lot more fame, like Will Smith, but maybe even unconsciusly, people just didn't take too seriously Carlton Banks!

probably cause Will Smith shoved his real name on the show and Alfonso didn't. That's how people can remember. Same thing with Martin Lawrence on his show "Martin" and Shawn & Marlon Wayans putting their real names on the Wayans Bros.
I get narcissist vibes from those types when they use their real names. They couldn't come up with something different? As a result, people from that generation and this remember Alfonso as Carlton and not get around towards remembering his real name.

Alfonso treated this as a run-of-the-mill TV sitcom meanwhile Geoffrey Owens before him was a regular guy on The Cosby Show. For Owens, the residual checks dried up when Cosby was dealing with the ordeal because he was talking about the deterioration of black people from his pound cake speech back in 2004.
Where I'm going here with this on two fronts, there wasn't enough offers given out to Alfonso after The Fresh Prince ended and people became too familiar with him and called him Carlton in real life.

I remember you being the "Best Friend" of Ricky's character on Silver Spoons. And you dancing and singing waaaaaay before the "Fresh Prince" even started.
So you are probably listening to the same ol' people and media, instead of doing YOUR *OWN* thing.
Will Smith *NEVER* gave you a break by casting you in one of his production films. That shows 'how deep' your friendship is with an egotistical man.

A job (where I can work from home in these covid-19 times), an apartment, food in the fridge, electricity etc. The grass is always greener on the other side and it's easy to forget what you have to be thankful for. If you are not in fear of your life, if you are not hungry, if you have a loving family, if you have a roof over your head, you have it good. As an artist I too dream about being famous. But as long as I have fun playing guitar, and a few people enjoy it, I'm good.

Its sad to see these stories because actors like Alfonso CAN act beyond that character they get known for but Hollywood wouldnt give them a chance.
This is why I like Adam Sandler, he puts all his comedian friends in his films, whether they be big stars or smaller comics, they get the chance. Same as what Redd Foxx did for his friends in Sandford & Son.

But most people aren't actors who have to try to overcome challenges, even caused by playing a character so well, that people who watched the show will attach Alfonso to the character he played. That part isn't on him as much as the people who chose to see him that way. That's why some people who get caught in that try to put their efforts on surpassing a role they used to play so the world could take him or her seriously. He did stopped acting at some point in his career. What was supposed to be an great experience changed into something that is not entirely of his hands. And Alfonso was doing what he could to live up to the expectations to nail the character, which he did to points that he will be remembered for it, in a way he didn't realize until pointed out by others.

@@mogdor He's not complaining about the people who loved him playing Carlton, he's complaining about how he is seemingly unable to get people to see that he can do more than one memorable role in a circumstance seemingly beyond his control. It's one of those things that you can only get when you experience and understand when you are on the wrong end of something. There's only so much you can see and understand on the outside looking in. It seems only those who experienced it themselves can understand.
People would love to have Alfonso's position, but what happens when they want what Al wants, but gets pushed into thinking that no matter what you do, people will only you see as the one character you used to play, and their nostalgia seems to refuse to see you as anyone else? Which seems to be a problem in itself. Other actors have fell to this as well, even some of the current ones. That's what pushes them to try all these roles and break the mold as much as possible.
I can't change your mind, but I hope you think on it the next time you see another actor talking about being type casted. I'll just stop here and discuss somewhere else.
