I was born in 1973. I built all the sets back to 1973. Then, a few years ago, I built them all back to 1952. I got the last card I needed for my 1952 at the National about 4 years ago. So much fun. Enjoy building your 1960s set to start the journey! :-)
After reading a comment and getting inspired to build a set from your birth year, I had to build my birth year 1973 set too. I asked around then picked up a small partial set from a dealer friend of mine in 2017ish of mainly of commons and minor stars. Then going to shows getting one by one I finally finished a NRMT set just over a year later. They had to be decently centered with no creases. Then I picked up the wrappers and an empty 5th series box at the Cleveland National in 2018. To this day it’s the most fun I’ve had. I’d love to get a certified unopened pack sometime.
Cards were printed on sheets of 132 cards. 792 is a multiple (6) of 132. This is why some sets are 660 (5) sheets. They didn't want to change the equipment that they made cards with.
You are totally right Jeff. I actually thought of that after I shot the video. That is also why the traded sets were always 132 cards. Thanks for the comment.
Aloha Mike, I stumbled on this older video and really enjoyed your passion. It has been a year and your spreadsheet looks great. Collecting older sets is not something most people can complete fairly quickly, it is a labor of love. The high number series can be very hard to come by as kids stopped collecting by series 5, 6, or 7. This meant many lower series commons are sold in lots, but high number lots are much harder to come by. I have been building sets for years, but I have a disadvantage living on the Big Island of Hawaii. On my side of the island we have Walmart and Target. No local card shops, card shows or clubs. I complete my sets through ebay. It can be done, but cost 2 to 3 times the cost to buy a complete set. I have built sets from each sport. I get excited every time the postal worker drives up and delivers the mail. I get to complete another part of the puzzle with a cherished piece of card board. The thrill never gets old. Thank you for your videos and knowledge. I get to go to the national through your video lens. All the best, Ken
Wow Mike. 1960 set is my favorite set. When I first started collecting cards with my dad and brother in the early.80s my dad bought me 2 sheets of 9 1960 cards who my dad thought were the top players at each position one sheet of 9 cards was the American league the other was the national league. He made sure they were in exceptional condition too. This gift included Berra, mantle, Koufax etc etc etc. You name it but by best player at each position for 1960. I ended up selling my cards in the early 90s when prices of cards peaked. However I never forgot the special birthday baseball cards of a spectacular set dad got me. I still have my run of Aaron's from 1955 to 76 minus 57 58 and 62. Some late 50s mays etc. But thst 1960 set abd that gift are soooo special. You should do a video of the 1960 set when complete. It will make me think of one of the amazing times with my dad. Hes still around and have awesome times now. This would be icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing about your goal on an amazing set.

So what I did was buy a 3 row giant top loader box. I printed checklists from 1957-1974, and pick up cards that I see deals on. So many times I had seen deals on cards but didn't buy them because I wasn't organized. I recently saw 1974 and 1970 cards at a flea market (4 for a dollar). Sometimes I go to a card show and see deals on different years. All of those cards are sorted in one box, and I bring my binder with all of the checklists. It is very enjoyable and I never have regrets because I am unorganized at a show. With that being said. I have half the 1970 set and over 400 of the 1968 set. Enjoy your journey. I enjoyed your video.
This is great information..I’m currently building the 1965 Topps set..I fell in love with that set after seeing the 2014 Topps Heritage Set..for the moment, I’m prioritizing commons and bargains for Hall of Famers, like managers of that era
Great idea....we're all young kids again, buying a pack from the dime store, hoping to get a card from our favorite player or team. A double card is expendable and gets clipped in the spokes with a clothes pin. Good luck in your set build.
Great video! Hope you are close to completing this set! I'm getting back into collecting cards again and trying to right a wrong I did by selling all my sets a while ago. I have recently re-acquired the 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1985 Topps Baseball sets. I also have my Reggie Jackson collection. I sold off my high end items of his. I've gone back and picked up raw cards of his (the 69, 70, 71 and other major ones). The one card I am kicking myself still for selling was his 1971 Topps Greatest Moments card. I am hoping to find that card again. I totally get what you are saying about the hobby. I've been turned off by the grading scene. I just want to remember my youth with raw cards and collecting sets like we were kids. Great video!!!!
Welcome to the world of set building again. Can totally relate - set building has always been my passion. When I've finished a set for my PC and I still enjoy the set, I will often go back and do another one sometimes to just enjoy the hobby aspect. I've completed my sets back thru 1956 and working on my 1955 currently. Only need 11 more of the 1955 high numbers (but have all of the big stars already including Mays and Clemente). I've also done or am currently doing extra 1957, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1966, 1969, 1971 sets. It gives me great joy to finish sets...and thus I can totally relate - I am down to under 20 on any of the duplicate sets to finish. I may sell one along the way, and then start the process all over again. Highly recommend starting with a decision about picking a condition - suggest for value purposes to consider aiming for EX or EXMT with pretty decent centering. I put great value in centering as I think it really makes the appearance pop. My personal experience is that when I "settle" for a card that doesn't measure up (and you'll know what I'm talking about when you get started) you end up spending money on that card and then again to replace it down the road, so skip the first one and discriminate to adhere to your condition grade - a complete consistently condition set is a thing of beauty! A bit of financial advice - your desire to start with a lot is really the best advice - start with a consistently graded lot of substantial size - at least 300-400 different if you can get it. A good place to start is to find somebody on ebay who has pulled the stars out already, sold or slabbed them, and they are just looking to move the group as a big lot. There can be great value there since you already have the big $$$ cards. I can endorse using thebattersbox.net as well as another poster indicated, but I would not buy individual cards until you've accumulated a lot of what you need through lots - otherwise you'll likely be buying cards that you may ultimately get through a lot which can drive your set cost up. Part of the challenge I love is to build the best set I can the most economically possible (for the condition you pick). Good luck with the high numbers... Also, if you are going to put the cards in binder and pages, suggest you put the cards in tight fitting sleeves which should fit into the pockets so you can protect the cards as well as make them snug so they won't fall out... Good luck - if you do your own thing as a set builder, the funks are rare and short-lived...some sets are more fun to do, some sets are more visually appealing to look at, some are more expensive due to SP in the high numbers or a guy named Rose in the high numbers of a 1963 set, but the appeal of building sets has never been something that gets old to me. It brings a bit of satisfaction that only another set builder can truly relate to...welcome aboard and good luck.

Man I just got back in I am building the 1964 topps baseball the year I was born I am also set building 70,71,72 football complete sets. Don't worry we all go thru that. Remain focused your an asset to the hobby
Working on a 1958 set. Started last March with a steal bid on an Eddie Mathews from that year. I'm now about 2/3 of the way through it, with most of the big dogs remaining. My only real criteria when buying for this set is I can see border on all four sides. Love the podcast. Look forward to more in the future.
@@BaseballCollector I purchased one lot of about 25 cards, everything else has been less than 10. I've been lucky to find a couple of ebay sellers with flat rate shipping and a good supply, so I've been able to pick up 5-10 at a time reasonably. It's getting harder and harder to find those deals though. I used to be able to find .99 commons all day long, now having trouble at under $2.
I always wanted a 1971 set. Gotten back into the hobby recently and it's been lots of fun! Also enjoying you're videos and wealth of knowledge. Keep it up!
You may have seen or heard, or even remember, that I'm doing the 68 raw, my birth year. I am within 80 cards, but from time to time I have picked up some older cards for sets that I am not building. If I have any 60s, you are more than welcome to them. I shall begin the search and let you know. Appreciate you sir, your wealth of knowledge, and your love of the hobby! Thank you for sharing!
Great video and idea! I just recently got started with vintage this year, mostly been an 80's/junk era collector. But I got my hands on a couple nice vintage collections and off I went. I joined an awesome vintage trading group where we help each other finish our sets by just sending cards people need based on their posted wantlists. It actually works out great! I'm now well on my way, a couple hundred cards in on the 1961 set (I started with a single card...Clemente). And I'm a lot closer on 70, 74, 78, and 79. I only had a handful of cards from each of those sets a few months ago! Set collecting is a lot more satisfying than I expected
I started collecting in 1977. Spent every nickel of my paper route money on cards from 1977 to about 1983. Then I started buying complete sets. Continued doing that to the present day, including traded and update sets. In the earlier years I was able to pick up completed 1976 and 1974 sets. But I caught baseball card covid in 2020 and started going backwards. Finished 1975 the 73, 72, 71, 70, 69, 68 and am about 40 cards shy of completing 67, my birth year. Everything in EX-EXMINT or better. I plan to keep going.
I think 60 was one of the most beautiful of the vintage sets. I'm looking at building vintage sets also but I'll be moving down to the 70's. I'd like to start and focus on 77 as soon as I can find a decent starter. Sounds like a lot of fun and that's what's important. Looking forward to the progress Mike!
Love your videos man. I just decided today that I was going to build a 1960 topps set myself. I haven't built a set since hughschool so I was looking for a video to help me get started. I don't know how I missed this video previously but I'm glad I found it and it just so happens to be about 1960 topps set. Amazing and I'm so excited to get going on this set. I have Robin Roberts-PSA 4 and submitted Mays and Musial to SGC today.
The hobby is already starting to change. So things should be getting back to the way us collectors know of the hobby soon. I have seen alot of prices finally coming back to earth.
Love the video as always. Great idea and it has inspired me to start collecting a set from my childhood. 1996 Topps chrome. The first chrome set. If you create a COMC account you can sort by year and even card number. Buy what you want and get a combined shipping. It’s maybe not as fun but you still have to check all the cards pictures and hunt.
This set is my favorite 60's set. I need to do a few upgrades but when I started building it I bought a large lot and then filled in the missing cards from there.
Cool project. I started my 1st "regular" vintage set build in January with 1955 Bowman. I had 1 card from the set and I now have around 50. I originally intended to build it already graded in PSA but I have since scrapped that plan and it will be a bit of PSA and mostly raw. Maybe someday I will grade anything that's raw but I'm not too worried about it if I don't. It will just be cool to have the set.
@@BaseballCollector There were several things that drew me to it as the set I wanted to build but one of the main things were the stories on the backs. Maybe I'll build a 60s set and a 70s after this. Just kind of do a vintage set per decade.
I’ve never built a set as old as 1960, so not sure this will help. I’m building sets in Baseball, Basketball, and Football from 1969 (my birth year forward). Acceptable condition will determine not only the cost, but how long it will take you to complete the collection. Greg Morris is very good, but you;ll pay full freight. Shows are best, IMO. You have to do a little more work but the cost will come way down-as well as making sure you get the condition you want. One thing that surprised me though about getting cards at shows is that it’s exhausting especially if you’re looking for NM NM-MT cards as I do. And the eyes don’t work as well as they once did! Good luck! You;ll have fun.
Cool! Good Luck! Nothing like having a goal in collecting and sticking to it. For the cert autograph sets I am working on are now getting hard as I am getting to the higher priced cards. However the chase is what makes it fun for me. Take care
Yes the 132 card sheet is correct. That's why you see 132, 264, 330, 660, 726 and 792. With the 726 from 1978-81 they used 66 double prints. Good luck with the set! Can't wait to see it.
That's why I got back into the hobby. If interested, I have 32 pristine commons that you might be interested in. They were acquired by me in a live auction as part of nearly 2,500 vintage baseball cards I purchased. I am working on 1962 and 1963 as a project. Base on your spreadsheet, they are all cards you could use. I don't do social media, but if you email your address to me, we can discuss it in more detail. Look forward to hearing from you.
You’re off to a great start with having so many HOF players. Watch out for the high numbers. Those can get really pricey depending on which set your finishing. I have been working on 67 for 3 years.
Some collectors decide their sets are complete without the high series numbers for that exact reason. Hard to justify paying 100 for a common card at times, but that’s what many of the SP high numbers cost in nice condition. Good luck!
I had the same feeling a month ago and I focused my collection to Steelers 99%, only raw cards....Right now, hobby boxes and breaks are out of my economic posibilities. But buy single cards help me to stay conected with this hobby.
Hey Mike, I also have been putting together sets from 1968 to the present. I have been watching your various you tubes for some time now, and enjoy the content. I now am putting together a 1956 Topps set. I may have some of the 1960 Topps cards you are looking for. I need a few 1972 high numbered cards, maybe we can do a trade (if you have any). Please let me know. Thanks!
Mike, don’t know how far you are with the 60s set or if you are trying to finish other vintage sets as well but I have been collecting over 35 years and have many minor stars and commons from 1956 thru the late 70s. I only have a few in the earlier years though. If you have an interest, let me know, most likely I can help you out. Jim
It seems that you're conflicted with the collector vs. investor aspect of the game. It seems you like to accumulate and own the piece of history and are having a tough time with the investors who only care about the financial aspect of the game essentially creating an artificial price barrier that you don't want to pay for cards.
What do you think about having a “which vintage set should I start?“ and it’s a series where every episode you highlight one year? Start with 1948 Bowman, then 1949 etc? I’ve learned so much about the 1960 set!
I would definitely suggest a company called thebattersbox located in Texas. I think $1000.00 is doable except for the high numbers. That's probably another $ 1000.00.
I second this, just bought around 100 of the 1973 Topps baseball cards from them. I was actually reading the 73 card backs as this video was posted. Been dealing with Battersbox for years, great seller.
I would have thought that if the ball was thrown into the stands that it would be considered “dead” and therefore could not be used to make an out. Sort of like a ground rule double.
Im not a big set collector, but I do understand why people do it. I have a few sets, but have always bought sets as a whole. I might tackle one of those more affordable, old sets. I think the Sporting News inserts and allstar cards from those older sets would be cool to put together. I love the 1960 set you chose, but I personally think the Yastrzemski rookie in the set is ugly. I prefer his 1961 Topps card, because I think it has much more eye appeal and presents much more nicely. As for people making money in the hobby, more power to them. That's great. Hey, if a guy can make a dollar, why not? I think it's nice to know that money is in the hobby and it can be liquidated, especially if a guy finds himself needing the money.
Mike, I agree with your issues about everything revolving around money lately in our hobby. It has sucked a little bit(or lot) of love out of the hobby. Zombie collector posted a good rant about it last night. Due to the crazy prices on slabbed cards I have decided to halt my post war HOF rookies set(62/108!) just because there is some insane prices right now. In the meantime I have been buying a lot of 50s-70s commons to eventually build sets with. I have really been focusing on 73 Topps at the moment. I agree with Greg, who posted below, go to battersbox’s website, you will not find better cards for the prices. www.the-battersbox.net/
Lots generally don't work that well. COMC, Battersbox, Dean's Cards and Ebay are the way to go. The more you buy at once the better to try to get discounts and save on shipping. The lots, unfortunately, are usually just as expensive, there's too much cross over with what you already own, and it's generally cards that aren't in great shape left over from other people's set build projects.
Baseball Collector , take your time , put a nice set together. Greg Morris on eBay is also a great place for set builders. He probably has two sets of 1960's every week, they cost a little more but there nice cards. $ 3.50 shipping for any seven day period.
That's funny I also have every top set from 1973 on including the traded and have been meticulously trying to build backwards. It's getting there slowly
Nice set! My dad and I are doing the 1960 topps and 1970 topps sets right now

That's actually a really interesting fact. How are they printed in the modern era?
Or when they went 728 (or whatever the amount was before the jump to 792) for a bit, there were double prints to fill out the sheets.
You are totally right Jeff. I actually thought of that after I shot the video. That is also why the traded sets were always 132 cards. Thanks for the comment.

Did you buy any bigger lots of commons or are you getting the cards 1 by 1?
@@BaseballCollector I purchased one lot of about 25 cards, everything else has been less than 10. I've been lucky to find a couple of ebay sellers with flat rate shipping and a good supply, so I've been able to pick up 5-10 at a time reasonably. It's getting harder and harder to find those deals though. I used to be able to find .99 commons all day long, now having trouble at under $2.
Great idea! I’m 296/332 on my 1956 PSA 7 set. It’s HIGHLY addictive, but a blast!
Thanks. I am looking forward to it.
I appreciate that Troy.
Great video Mike- the chase of building a set is a blast. I’m currently 90% done with the 1959 Topps set I’ve been working on for 10 months.
The vintage cards are the best. My favorite Topps years are '71 and '72
Congratulations to you brother Mike! Way to change your focus and just get back to the simplicity of our hobby and being a kid inside
Thanks William.
I'm doing 1960 Topps around 100ish cards to go in mine, have fun Mike with it!! Love the videos also
I think 60 was one of the most beautiful of the vintage sets. I'm looking at building vintage sets also but I'll be moving down to the 70's. I'd like to start and focus on 77 as soon as I can find a decent starter. Sounds like a lot of fun and that's what's important. Looking forward to the progress Mike!
Good luck with your set build Mike! I love building sets! It is such a relaxing & therapeutic way to collect in my opinion. Stay safe my friend.
That is awesome! Good luck getting it done!!
The hobby is already starting to change. So things should be getting back to the way us collectors know of the hobby soon. I have seen alot of prices finally coming back to earth.
Good luck ,enjoy it,enjoy the journey not the destination!
Awesome vid Mike. We cheer you on your adventure 🤟🏻
Thanks will. I appreciate the support.
1960 really is a beautiful set. Nice choice for a fun project.
I use COMC. Thanks for the suggestion
This set is my favorite 60's set. I need to do a few upgrades but when I started building it I bought a large lot and then filled in the missing cards from there.
That is kind of the approach I am considering.
I look forward to your progress on this set. I started a new project myself though not a vintage set. A more affordable way to collect.
That will be a gorgeous set George. I have grown to love 1955 Bowman.
Take care
I just finished the 1953 Topps Yankees team set (PSA). Now I’m start the 1953 Red Man with tabs.
Yes the 132 card sheet is correct. That's why you see 132, 264, 330, 660, 726 and 792. With the 726 from 1978-81 they used 66 double prints. Good luck with the set! Can't wait to see it.
Positive mike is back lol 👍 looking forward to the videos throughout this journey...
Thanks Tyler. Good to be back. Lol
Hi Mike I sent you an email earlier today with a list of all of the 1960 topps Commons that I collected as a kid.
I have not seen it yet Jeff. Did you send it to gonzaleznut@hotmail.com? Try it again.
I got it and replied.
1960 is a great set! I love it.
Thanks Jake. I am really excited about it.
I have some for ya Mike...another notable RC, Pumpsie Green...1st African American on the Red Sox...keep collecting!!
Great choice. That was my favorite set as a kid. I have a lot of extras. Lmk if I can help.
Don't you have my email address? Send me a list of what you have and we can see about getting a deal worked out.
My email is gonzaleznut@ hotmail.com
You’re off to a great start with having so many HOF players. Watch out for the high numbers. Those can get really pricey depending on which set your finishing. I have been working on 67 for 3 years.
Thanks MItchell. I am learning my budget target may have been a little low.
Some collectors decide their sets are complete without the high series numbers for that exact reason. Hard to justify paying 100 for a common card at times, but that’s what many of the SP high numbers cost in nice condition. Good luck!
I have been set building for 52 years , man i am getting old
That is a long time in the hobby. Awesome.
I had the same feeling a month ago and I focused my collection to Steelers 99%, only raw cards....Right now, hobby boxes and breaks are out of my economic posibilities. But buy single cards help me to stay conected with this hobby.
Hope the set goes well. It sounds like a great project for you.
Thanks Scott
Great episode Mike!
Thanks Matt.
Thanks!
Thanks Marck for reaching out. I have already finished the 1960 set. I don't have any 1972 high numbers either. Sorry.
Jim
Thanks Jim. I am currently in the beginning stages of building a 1972 Topps set. You can email me at gonzaleznut@hotmail.com
Your going to have a great time building a set. Check out BCB (Baseball card Binders) really nice binders for the finishing touch🤙🏼💯
I have seen those binders before. I might have to splurge on one of those for this special of a project.
It seems that you're conflicted with the collector vs. investor aspect of the game. It seems you like to accumulate and own the piece of history and are having a tough time with the investors who only care about the financial aspect of the game essentially creating an artificial price barrier that you don't want to pay for cards.
You are 100% correct.
What do you think about having a “which vintage set should I start?“ and it’s a series where every episode you highlight one year? Start with 1948 Bowman, then 1949 etc? I’ve learned so much about the 1960 set!
That is actually something I am planning on doing.
792 cards is for the uncut sheets of 132 cards (I have one from 1985).
Terrific seller
chris daugherty , So your the one that got my 73's. 😉
AaronP , you definitely know your getting a nice card.
Thanks for the advice Greg. I will definitely check them out.
Sounds like you need to collab an episode w Jake to get a perspective from a veteran set collector
Which set the main set or the Venezuela set.? Value full set main is 5,000.00
The main set.
A 3-inch binder will do.
Will be sending you card numbers 25,27,61,67,193,293,298,299,340,351,368,371,466,478,486,518,527,539,549, in the near future. Happy hunting.
Thanks Barry. Send me an email to gonzaleznut@ hotmail.com.
Those are some good points.
Dean’s Cards will bankrupt you!😂
If you decide to use thebattersbox buy off his website, it will save you a lot.
Already started looking!! Thanks.
Baseball Collector , take your time , put a nice set together. Greg Morris on eBay is also a great place for set builders. He probably has two sets of 1960's every week, they cost a little more but there nice cards. $ 3.50 shipping for any seven day period.
The happiness is gone from the hobby.
6 132 card sheets =792
Your video went out of sync
That's funny I also have every top set from 1973 on including the traded and have been meticulously trying to build backwards. It's getting there slowly
