How sea salt is made

  • At the Jacobsen Salt production facility in Netarts Bay, Oregon, it’s a two-and-a-half week process taking the water from the bay to a bag of salt. Water is pulled from the bay using a 2-inch PVC pipe and that water is pumped into large vats where it’s boiled and the process of evaporation begins.

I just started buying crystal sea salt about two months ago. Walgreens sells 99 gram (3.5 ounce) bottles with a salt grinder lid attached for $1.79. I'm pretty skimpy with my salt intake so that should last me a while. It used to take me 3 or 4 years to use up one of those round Morton Salt containers. Salt itself never expires. Persian blue salt is about 400 million years old and its delicious. It has a very distinctive taste. Salty with a much more pleasant aftertaste than regular table salt.

Will this extraction of sea salt from water hurt marine life and what do you boil it with heat wise?

Picked up 10 gallons of salt water from Netarts Bay this afternoon. Will be evaporating in my greenhouse.

      How did it go?

@@centrafrique9252 great results- I filtered about a gallon at a time and then boiled for 10 minutes or so to kill off any bacteria. It’s takes about a week or so to evaporate the water in the greenhouse and ended up with quite a bit more salt than I anticipated. It’s pretty unique and saltier tasting than your normal table salt. I use it daily now! I have about 4 more gallons to go for this years harvest.

@@loganforgey4281 You do have to be careful with pure greenhouse evaporation processing for mold and bacterial buildup. This can vary depending on how you got the water and how you allowed it to evaporate.

Is this ionized or no ionized salt?

Did you mean iodide? If so, this is something that is added after the process if requested.

You're wasting fresh water through desalination evaporation. Fail.

Though this is true, it wouldn't really make sense for them to start a fresh water business alongside their salt business. Especially in their area of operation, fresh water is not scarce.

Or You just could use the sun like France and dozen of countries do its extremely energy costly I imagine. I tasted it and paid the full price well it's not as subtle as slow process sea salt in France or whatever same process of evaporation , same with the texture, quite corse it isn't melting like usual sea salt from Brittany I'm not a climate crazy purist but less face it, England has just a shitty and humid weather to do like other sunny countries. 😅
I've no problem still better than working in salt mines for folks (some still love to do it but it's not the same anymore salary and statut wise like 100yo) but I was quite disappointed, maybe expected too much. Salt is so subtle and at the same time seems so simple.
