    Plants that attract or provide habitat for wasps are the best way to keep cabbage worms away. The yellow-jackets eat most of the cabbage worms on all of my grandmother's brassicas.

    • @marielefebvre5891

      Yes! I watched a yellow jacket eat a worm once. It was incredible!

    • @Jerseyhighlander
      @Jerseyhighlander ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I've historically had terrible problems with cabbage worms, such that I gave up trying to grow broccoli. This year, planted cabbage & broccoli and was just prepared to do battle. One day I look up under my roof and there is a hornet nest... kept seeing them patrolling my plants every day. They didn't bother me, I left the nest there and they are keeping my plants safe. Once in a while I'd find a little damage and go looking to pick them off but find nothing, hornets got to them first.

      The best way to avoid bugs on cabbage is netting or mesh. More in this video: th-cam.com/video/-NYVacngcXw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yhVj4M-6XSaxX3TV

    So much for dill protecting cabbage plants. I have dill planted next to my cabbage plants, I woke up this morning to discover one cabbage plant completely eaten by some insect.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry to hear that. The dill won't protect against all bugs. Perhaps they were attacked by slugs?

  • @Skifreakdawn
    @Skifreakdawn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well I have dill, thyme, and a small amount of mint already in my garden. I planted my cabbage in tubs and sat them at the edge of my garden and just this morning woke up to small holes in them.

    • @GrowVeg

      That's annoying Kayla. If in doubt, insect mesh or row covers/fleece is always worth deploying on cabbages.

    When you make your own pesticide for cabbages, do you have to re-apply after each rain? winter time, I add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to my mixture for it to stick to the leaves and not run off.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, if there is lots of rain I imagine you'd need to reapply more frequently.

    Is cabbage, frost hardy? I'm gonna try to protect them and try to get some kind of harvest, but I don't wanna bother them if it's about to die a month from frost

    What other is good for current aphid infestation? This are the critters flying everywhere when I just touch my cabbage or broccoli etc, correct??

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often these tiny winged insects die off with the first frost, or even the first colder nights. You could look at our guides to cabbage pests for more ideas for controlling aphids etc. though: www.growveg.com/pests/us-and-canada/plant-problems/cabbage-pests-identification/

    • @GrowVeg

      You could use string to tie old CDs onto canes stuck in the ground around your plants. The reflected light is meant to scare them off. To be honest though, the only real way to be sure is to throw a net or row cover/horticultural fleece over vulnerable plants so they can't get at them. But maybe try the CDs first to see if they work as they're very easy to set up - and free if you've got some old music you're looking to get rid of!

    I'm having a big problem with my cabbage. rat and mice eating them. Any suggestion? I try hot pepper habanero spray. Covering them with bucket they go underneath. I tried almost everything. It's very frustrating

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never experienced this problem. Short of growing them inside a greenhouse or polythene tunnel that is properly secured from rats and mice, I'm not sure how you would stop them from getting eaten. Are you sure it is mice and rats eating them? Pigeons are the usual culprits, especially in autumn and winter, in which case you can put netting up around plants to stop them. Properly secured at regular intervals around the edges, perhaps by burying the sides with soil, this could also help to stop rats and mice too.

    • @Sergecalifornia
      @Sergecalifornia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrowVeg thanks for your answer. I just found out who is the culprits. It was mice. I caught 4 in one night. With a regular trap. Since Dan's no problem. But I still keep traps around in case. I did try netting it didn't work, they went through making a hole. Thanks again

      This is a possibility however... You would have to hover over your plants many times during the day. Caterpillars have a veracious appetite and can destroy a plant in no time at all.
