PMS stands for Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya [ women who are completely independent ] This song was actually written by Marsya (vocals, guitar), Widi (bass), and Sitti (drums) during high school around 2017 together with their counseling teacher and mentor Abah Erza. “We write songs fueled by the residual energy we leave after school. At that time, we were very enthusiastic about school activities, so basically we had to drag ourselves to the studio for workshops,” recalls Marsya. PMS is an expression of VOB's antipathy, displeasure, and anger towards their current situation, both lyrically and musically. Despite the conditions they were in, there wasn't a trace of fatigue in the songs they produced. The main inspiration behind the lyrics of "PMS" comes from a series of short stories written by Indonesian writer Feby Indirani entitled "Bukan Perawan Maria" [ Not the Virgin Mary ]. This single focuses on VOB's protest against discriminatory and judgmental behavior that tends to be aimed at women who have different mindsets, perspectives, attitudes, and even desires or dreams compared to the norm. Departing from a region where social norms are heavily influenced by not only religious values but also patriarchy, the VOB has had its fair share of gender-based discrimination in the past. The absence of post-high school life options for many girls other than marriage will be one of them. The same goes for career options, which are limited for VOBs and their peers due to gender discrimination. "Ironically, it's not just men who would display such behavior, but our fellow women as well!" Marsya commented.
PMS = Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya = Completely Independent Woman (the 3 words of Bahasa Indonesia I know). There's a very specific story behind the song. I'll see if I can dig up a pointer (in the form of a suitable search string, since youtube don't like URLs). And yes, I've seen reports that they're aware of the English meaning of PMS and that they're playing on it. The song is a response to a short story collection called Bukan Perawan Maria (Not Virgin Mary) by Indonesian author Feby Indirani. If you search youtube for LontarFoundation Feby Indirani it should take you to an interview with the author. At 2:56 she talks about Bukan Perawan Maria (English subtitles available). They wrote the song in high school (2017?), with lyrics that were all in Bahasa Indonesia. The English verse is newer, and is slightly different than the English translation of the old version. Musixmatch has a translation (search for Musixmatch Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya). I think I know why they kept the chorus in Indonesian - the assonance and alliteration in "Aku bukan budak busuk otakmu" are just incredible. How could you ever match that in English and come close to keeping the meaning? People raised in a Christian society may be surprised by Mary showing up in an Islamic context, but she appears more often in the Koran than the bible (check Wikipedia for Mary in Islam). The arrangement of the song is also quite different from early versions, but you can pretty easily tell that it's the same song. I think they're all in their early 20s in this video (born in 2000 and 2001) and that people assume that they're younger than they are partly because they're rather short (as you can see when they're standing next to other people in the video).
"You're so high.. To even think that heaven was made for you.." I began tearing up when i heard this. Wow. Where did this come from??? Definitely not from a rosy kumbaya place. Yes. This is the metal band the world needs right now.
Hi Sir and Mam ... Tons of RESPECT and APPRECIATE for supporting VOB ... P M S (Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya) / Completely Free Woman Standing in the arms of your mind Is killing all my time Your loud dogma is just a ruse To shackle all the fools Assenting all the filth you throw My inner voice starts to die Trapped in your heart that's hollow My differences, you vilify You're so high.. Standing in the arms of your mind
Is killing all my time
Your loud dogma is just a ruse
To shackle all the fools
Assenting all the filth you throw
My inner voice starts to die
Trapped in your heart that's hollow
My differences, you vilify
You're so high..
To even think that heaven was made for you
Mock those in sight
Demonize me, with hell you threw
Chorus :
Meski tak seperawan Maria
Aku bukan budak busuk otakmu
Meski tak seperawan Maria
Akulah merdeka merdekalah seutuhnya
Yeah, I refuse your hell of lust
And suddenly the world turns just
Oh, how I long for a life of bliss
And finally, put my mind at ease
I never needed, all of your stupid fascist words
What I long, is a peaceful world of colors
