  • Hazzabhajan takes a look at every single men's national team who has only participated in one major international tournament in their entire history, as well as how they fared at those respective competitions.
Teams range from Bosnia & Herzegovina's appearance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to minnows of the world game like St Kitts & Nevis, whose qualification to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup didn't end well...

The history of AFC Asian Cup is weird because my mum's home "nation" Hong Kong (the situation between Britain’s handover and their agreement with china to allow 1 nation, 2 systems for 50 years since 97 is a quagmire) qualified for the first 3 tournaments because football wasn’t professional back in 50s and 60s in Asia. It was the equivalent of the early 1900s British football. Now Hong Kong have qualified for 2024 edition after so much chaos in recent years in the past 5 years. Plus ageing British footballers used to go to Hong Kong for one last payday in the 80s and 90s, proving those chasing that Saudi bag is absolutely nothing new.

The AFC Asian Cup definitely seems to have a weird history, but it's good to see Hong Kong qualify for their first finals since the amateur days, especially after - as you say - all the chaos they've been through.
As for the ageing footballers going there, I guess there have always been phases of various countries bringing people over for large sums of cash (Japan around the same time as Hong Kong, USA and China recently too), so the Saudi bag most definitely isn't a new phenomenon - just a much more overtly political one I suppose...
