    I think what’s so frustrating about the queerbaiting accusations is that they tend to fall into 2 camps. 1. Is them being mad onlyoneof make queer media in a way they don’t like period. I remember when the solos came out and so many people were like “I’m glad they’ve grown, even though libidO was tasteless/queerbaity” which makes no sense because libidO never baited about anything. This whole talking point comes from people severely misunderstanding what the song and album are even about, which could be fixed by simply reading the description. People criticized it because it was too sexual or because they said girl in the lyrics. Saying it was either too gay to not be a marketing ploy or too straight to be genuine. But the entire point of the album was never about being just gay or straight, it was about sexual liberation in any form cause having these feelings is literal instinct and human nature. And by adding an explicitly queer mv all they did was make a point to add queer experience to that narrative, showing that both straight and queer feelings and desires are natural and should be allowed to be explored. The point was always to advocate for inclusiveness and liberation and yet people twisted it into something it’s not just so they could have a gotcha! to use just because it wasn’t their taste.
    The second talking point is always about the idea that the members play into the units outside of the Art and how them not being out is them being exploitative, which people have various opinions on (myself included), but I think what people forget in those situations is that queerbaiting as a specific concept thrives on plausible deniability, “the will they won’t they”, “is it real or not”. Their side content is often paired in the units (eg. Last years producing contest), and knowing people like their chemistry some of the members will play into the unit fan service/banter for good fun. (Kb and yoojung doing so the most) however every single time they are directly asked about their relationship status they make sure to immediately shut any confusion down. I remember a livestream where someone asked Rie if he was dating junji and he immediately responded with a flat out no (as he should). Removing any of the plausible deniability and reaffirming they’re just having fun and at best playing up their existing close friendships. Everyone can have their own opinions on that, and a larger conversation in general can be had on how the K-pop industry plays into fan service, but to me the important part is that ooo don’t talk around it at all. they play around, but they’re definitely not “playing gay to deceive people and exploit them” like people like to pretend they are.
    As a side note I always find it fascinating how skinz is never mentioned in this conversation since the mv is quite literally about a fan’s parasocial relationship with the group. Pointedly showing the pov of a fan’s fantasy/delusion about how they think spending a day with the members would be, including tons of imagery alluding to the fan thinking the members are actually dating/gay for each other cause they can’t separate the art (libido pairings) from the group in real life. While I have some problems with skinz, including the execution of this specific concept cause it flew over SO many people’s heads, it shows they have a lot of self awareness about their work and how people perceive them. I don’t think a group going out of their way to “queerbait” would make a whole music video pointing out that everything that happened in it was just the fantasy of a fan. (In the press release for the mv this fan fantasy pov was explicitly stated). It’s a very pointed commentary that imo almost stands opposite to the concept of queerbaiting. But that’s just my 2 cents on it all

      Also it’s not a surprise that the people who swear up and down about ooo queerbaiting are often coming from a place of privilege. Forgetting South Korea’s general views on LGBT issues. A western audience will nitpick onlyoneof to hell, yet aiming the most vile and 18th century level homophobic remarks at them was the general consensus in skr. They deserve better from both sides. (Also I can’t edit the comment anymore but I wrote it late n sleep deprived n I think I meant to say focus on promoting vagueness when it comes to queerbaiting rather than JUST plausible deniability)

      It seriously bothers me that ppl claim queerbaiting specifically when it comes to the content that's more sexual in nature, when that's the entire point of the concept, is to explore forms of sexuality. It's like ppl can't make anything involving mlm sexual content without assuming it's for the female gaze or it's fetishizing, which as someone who is mlm myself, I find incredibly frustrating. I've seen too many ppl claim it's fan service and pandering to the female audience bc they find gay men hot, which is incredibly insulting

    the main argument i see ppl use for their whole "ooo is queerbaiting" bs is that they're not out irl which is so ignorant on so many layers...
    first of all that's not how queerbaiting works, the actor's sexuality doesn't matter as long as the character is queer. and ooo have been nothing but supportive of the community
    and even worse, no one owes you a coming out, even in more accepting countries, but especially in a conservative society and industry! what ooo are doing rn is already brave af, coming out as anything other than straight could not only end their career but put them in real danger. just think about holland who not only isn't on any shows in korea but was literally attacked on the street. how could you possibly expect or even demand that someone comes out in such an environment? that's such a privileged way of thinking...
    what ooo are doing is beautiful representation and so many queer fans feel seen, understood and empowered by them, it's so ridiculous to dismiss all of this just bc they never disclosed their own sexualities...

    • @Tomie1411
      @Tomie1411 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YES, I think people don't understand what really Is "queerbaiting". Many actors portray gay characters in movies even though they are straight, moreover It Is just rude to assume ooo's sexuality.

    as a queer man it is frustrating just how many people accuse onlyoneof of queerbaiting when it is so clear that they are not. they have brought me so much comfort and happiness with these music videos because everything is so beautifully done, the love portrayed in the videos is just so... normal, which is something that is sadly not often seen in queer media since they tend to make everything tragic and tend to focus only on how awful life is when you are queer, whereas these music videos focus on the beauty of it, sure there are hints of angst- but the overall feeling in the music videos are not about tragedy and that makes me so incredibly happy. it is so nice to see a kpop group actually make content that impact the community in a POSITIVE way, whereas so many groups tend to simply do fanservice and never actually say anything. And to expand on what you guys said about not knowing idols sexuality- i think that is something that stan twitter seems to forget, not only do we not know their sexualities, but they dont owe us a coming out either, if they are queer, they do not have to tell us, and it is still okay for them to tell queer stories even if they arent "out".

    Thank you for speaking out for OnlyOneOf. People don't want to see queer people happy, that's definitely the reason. They just keep finding excuses to undermine OnlyOneOf and their team's effort. It is not about OOO members' sexuality, it is about everyone in their team being on board with putting thoughts, effort, and resources toward inclusion and normalizing queer love. How precious is this? and this happens in South Korea. Some people outside the culture also do not understand the context and force the Western mindset on them, which is also very inappropriate. Please support OOO's music in every way you can, streaming, buying albums, telling other people about them, letting them be successful and making them keep doing what they are doing.

    I‘m just gonna leave here what Holland said (if you don‘t know him, he‘s often labeled as the first openly gay idol and does a lot on his social media to talk about serious topics): „it's really important for someone to listen to their music and get comfort and love i hope that they will have a positive impact on a number of LGBTQ children, and that they will be able to work with me someday“
    They are always respectful and we have Nine for example, covering songs and changing the word „girl“ to „baby“ to make it neutral
    (Also yes, society went downhill when Twitter learnt the word queerbaiting )

    "This man makes me wanna go to the gym" On god, Let me tell you how I reached out to a friend that does personal training for this exact reason. KB won't leave me alone. I was just tryna mind my own business....
    That aside: I lowkey think this bts could've been longer. I know there's a video of Yoojung claiming that they filmed scenes for "be free", that were on the spicier side. So either he was trolling or they actually did and the editing team made a executive decision to ultimately not include them in either the official MV or the Behind cut. We'll never know. But also 1000/10 agree with the rant. Like I can understand squinting at those couple of moments where it seems like they're going dramatically out their way to play up the ship (looking specifically at these two) but overall they've been really respectful in telling all of these stories and I genuinely appreciate that. It's definitely not queerbaiting.

    from my own perception of what onlyoneof is doing, the queerbaiting accusations somewhat “frustrate”(?) me? i can understand where people are coming from in that they wanna make sure that the lgbtq+ community isn’t being exploited for views, sales, money etc. and that is entirely valid. in my own perception, it’s not about the pairing of yoojung and kyubin but about kyubin portraying person a and yoojung portraying person b and the different experiences people might have with their sexualities while also falling into a relationship with one another. i remember saying to someone back when libido was released that if the pairings had been members with actors, they would’ve gotten a hell of a lot less backlash because a lot of people were seeing the member x member pairings and automatically assuming it was some ploy to earn money and popularity through shipping members together. idk if i’m even making sense but i feel like a lot of the context is lost when people make these accusations but obviously i can only make assumptions - i’m not on onlyoneof’s production team lol and can only speak for what i personally believe. i’m open to any other thoughts and conversation though.

    • @DifferentlyAlike
      @DifferentlyAlike  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      But this is not queerbaiting. That’s an issue with exploitation and capitalism. Which is an entire separate issue and could also be expanded into straight presenting kpop media. The whole “my idol loves me”-trope to sell albums and to create this fake relationship.
      Which isn’t even what they are doing here. They chose to create music through a different lens from the norm. Why is that now an issue? If we scream inclusivity then why would this fall under this?
      A ploy to get money through shipping members together… that’s assuming that they play themselves in their music video and that the personas from their music video continue off screen, in their behinds, in the vlogs, in other media as well. Since we have only seen the behinds and not other OOO content we can’t say wether that is through or false. Based on the behinds we have seen so far that doesn’t seem to be the case.
      We really need to delve into this topic more because these different perspectives are needed although it’s still not queerbaiting. At least to us.

    • @DifferentlyAlike
      @DifferentlyAlike  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don’t worry about ranting 😭

    • @kooiuck
      @kooiuck ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DifferentlyAlike i completely agree. i think that’s why i’ve always had an issue with the accusation that it’s queerbaiting, because like you both mentioned they just took the word and ran with it to cover all the “bases” even when it’s not entirely relevant. and then on top of that, there’s never been (as far as i’m aware) any confirmation of whether they’re playing characters or whether they’re just being themselves in these videos, which makes it even more frustrating that others jump to the conclusion that there’s some ulterior motive to this representation - we don’t know them personally, either way. if any of the members or their company had said “haha this video was a portrayal of friendship between men”, i’d understand the queerbaiting narrative but that’s not the case and so i will continue to believe that what they’re doing is beautiful. because it is.

    • @shanr3338

      Artists have to survive in the capitalist and competitive entertainment industry, so there is nothing wrong with doing things to attract attention. It is like what OOO sings about in their debut song "savanna" - this is the law of the jungle. Overlooking their contribution, fixating on potential limitations, and assuming things are manifestations of bias and prejudice, possibly from implicit racism or homophobia - that Asian queer people are not deserving of attention or representation in popular media. That being said, I need OOO to attract more attention and earn more money, the more the better. They deserve it.
      For those people who think exploitation is an issue. It is literally everywhere. They can just go live on an isolated island or mountain without consuming any media or buying any products. Maybe they can also keep worrying about exploiting the natural resources on earth.

    I commented already but I'm gonna do it again😂
    I think in kpop, the fans queerbait the most. It should be allowed to hold your best friends hand, or to give them a quick platonic kiss on the cheek, or to literally just stare at them for longer than 5 seconds. But no, all these kpop stans ship these idols immediately. I generally have no problem with shipping if you do it just for the fun of it, but so many kpop stans go so over the top with their bs that they literally think their faves are in a proven relationship just because their eyes met and they smiled or some shit.
    The way I see it, being a kpop idol is kind of a role itself. You act in a specific way so that people are properly entertained and you play into the group. I don't think any idol persona aligns with the actual idols as people when the cameras aren't rolling. So if being an idol is playing a role, then giving gay fanservice just to claim that they're both straight later on is the literal definition of queerbating. Not that I have so much against it, you gotta do what you gotta do to pay your checks. But all these fans play so much into that. If queerbating is such a problem, why do you watch a 20 minute video of your otp doing fanservice everyday? Huh, doesn't really make sense.
    People don't see queerbating when it's literally played out in front of them, but accuse people of queerbating when their entire concept is representing actual proven queer characters.
    An actor doesn't have to have the same sexuality as their character, and to think otherwise is so backfired honestly. Like wtf, it's literally an actors job to act! By that dumb definition of queerbating, actors wouldn't be allowed to act, because they present something they're not, and in rl they can't talk for their character and their feelings. But it's just an act. It's not rl, not that deep. And if you act well, you can represent anything really. And that's the beauty of acting. It's that you can show the story's of people who aren't you, who probably don't even exist, and whose story's need to be heard. And the fact that some people prefer to cancel people over literally a false accusation over just enjoying art, and enjoying these story's, is so sad to me.

    Some beautiful people in this comment section probably said it all in a much better way then me, but I’d like to put in my two cents.
    I look at it this way, someone in the higher ups of the company is definitely on the mission to tell some queer stories through onlyoneof. I view boys as actors, that play roles.
    With libido and skinz I wasn’t sure at first. Don’t get me wrong, I love everything about these two concepts, but I still can imagine how it could be viewed as queerbating. Sexy good-looking boys being sexy and a little gay together. It went viral and caught attention of people who knew nothing about them. And bl stuff does sell these days, the industry is huge. So you’d naturally wonder about the reason of all of that.
    But! Be free and begin, and be mine is a different story, different vibe. It’s artistic, it has storylines, everything is clear, no hinting, no homoerotic tension (something that I would consider queerbating.)
    Another thing that is important is how boys talk about what they are doing behind the scenes. They all seem to be fully aware of what they are doing, they are respectful, they seem to be understanding and open minded and what else do you want from them?? And I totally agree about us not knowing their sexuality, they definitely can’t openly come out yet, but maybe some of them are living their best lives right now, passionately telling us stories that they can relate to. Maybe that is exactly the reason why all of their music and music videos are so freaking good.

      while I agree with your comment in the behind the scenes of libido the members themselves literally said that they were partners in the music video and it's not the first time onlyoneof did choreography like that either and skinz was about the parasocial relationship between lyons and onlyoneof were they are showing u that the couples are a fantasy someone in the comment section talked about it

  • @personunknown7129
    @personunknown7129 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's also funny how we all know where this queerbating accusation leads: into pressuring them to give a statement about their sexuality. By today's weird and false definition of queerbating, a gay character can't be portrayed by a straight person, and that's just bs. Other people's sexualities should be none of our business, and if an assumption works in one way, it will always work the other way around too. People who say ooo are queerbating literally can't think 3 seconds ahead, cause forcing people to give a statement about their sexuality and eventually to come out is such a cruel thing to do, especially if that person is a kpop idol.
    It's honestly so weird to me, I literally saw the same accusation in a yt video today and it was uploaded like 2 weeks ago. In there the creator also said something like 'they profit off white straight women who fetishize gay men' which is so funny to me, cause it just proves that the creator has never talked to one lyon in their entire life lmao. And that just proves to me that these people first of all have no idea who ooo and their fans are, and what queerbating is. And why would you make statements about stuff you have no idea about? I just don't understand.
