This is a nice introduction to some fun chords, I’d suggest a couple of developments from here For Shape 2, instead of fretting with your 1st and stretching the 2nd finger, I’d recommend using your 1st and 3rd finger. This will help for quicker chord changes between Shape 1 and Shape 2. Secondly, in this exercise we get up to the voicing of 9800, which acts like an E or the V chord of A. If we then fret 9900 this acts as an A power chord and can resolve the tension of the V chord in a satisfying way I also think that when talking about rhythms it’s better to use the American system of half note, Quarter note, 8th note etc, as I feel it makes more sense than out minim, crotchet and quaver system. But I don’t know the demographics of your magazine and how much of your readers are British
Good point, my fingers are long so hadn't occured to me. I also agree that American systems make more sense - readership is 90% UK though, so stuck with that.
Further to Marc's comments I would suggest when moving between Shape 1 and 2, keep Shape 1 with 1st and 2nd finger, keep 2nd finger down and add 3rd finger on the next fret - when changing from Shape 2 to Shape 1 move all 3 fingers in Shape 2 to the new start fret on the C string and lift up 3rd finger to leave Shape 1

On which note (no pun!) re. other comments about the American system, I used to teach that alongside the British way for its practicality e.g. dealing with time signatures. And, yes, I'd use fingers 1 and 3 for Shape 2 too.
