- Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of four counts of defrauding investors in a federal court Monday. The verdict comes years after former employee Tyler Shultz first reported concerns to state regulators. Shultz reacts to Holmes' verdict on “CBS Mornings.”

I don’t necessarily think he is rich. I recall a story he told about how agonized he was in facing theranos lawyers threatening to sue him for ratting on them to newspaper. He said he was worried that his parents my have to mortgage their home to pay for the lawsuit. I’m sure he has a bright future but I don’t think he comes from big money-his grandfather was a public servant, not some rich millionaire as far as I know
@@dano159 OP isn’t blaming him. When you have your grandfather as the former Secretary of State AND a member on the board of the company you’re trying to “whistle blow”, it isn’t really the turmoil he makes it sounds to be. His other colleague, Erica Cheung was being followed and harassed by Theranos’ legal team, she was scared to death and after talking to a “free” lawyer, she wrote an extensive letter that initiated the investigation, to me, what she did what far more courageous as she had no one to back her or cover her legal fees.
as his family was ready to sell their home, if theranos would suit them, so they was not that rich... Maybe his grand father is rich, but he was against him on that time...
Tyler is golden. He radiates, and I'm grateful that he so courageously stood up for the truth in this hideous situation.
I totally agree. I think it is hard for us to really understand the misery that EH, with the support of Tyler’s own grandfather!!, put this man through. It took real guts to stand firm.

@@DMalltheway No. Her tech worked fine. In fact, it was more accurate than Sieman's. And here's the interesting part. Now that her company is defunct, Sieman's is using her technology and they're worth a whole lot more than a measly 9 billion. Holmes was on her way to changing the world, but the world isn't ready for change, I guess.
He was also threatened and intimidated by her lawyers. His Grandfather choose to believe her instead of his own Grandson. Integrity matters.

There was evidence uncovered by the media (on John Carreyrou's podcast) that even at the age of 94, George Schultz chose to believe Elizabeth over Tyler because of MONEY. He was given over 2 million shares of the company by Elizabeth, with each share worth as much as $17 at its height

pretty sure his Grandfather was enamored of her. almost all of the investors were, of a combination of her appearance and the story her success told. none of them did the diligence they normally would have.
one of the MANY disturbing things about this is the fact that they found her guilty on the 4 counts defrauding INVESTORS, not the four on defrauding PATIENTS. I cant even begin to imagine the things the people who got wrong results had to go through, yet she was found not guilty on that. its ridiculous. Just shows me (once again) the system does not care about the victims.... (also they should've let him finish speaking instead of interrupting a million times lol)

The jury didn’t find that the patients weren’t defrauded. I assume something made the jury doubt that Holmes was personally responsible.

If these trials had been consistent balwani would have been found guilty on patient fraud but not investor fraud which Holmes was found guilty of . But bulwami got the book thrown at him. Looks like big doe eyes and blonde hair work in every situation.
Exactly and then you wonder why we have such a huge criminal element. They don't have an excuse but the system fails us time and time again because of people not being neutral to begin with. Who knows how many other people like her got away with this sort of nonsense.
This is awkward, this just shows how messed up we are as a society. The guy was rightfully upset because of the defrauding of patients. But the justice system decided to prosecute based on the defuding of investors. It would’ve been nice if there was a mixture of the two.

1000%. The investors didn't seem to care to vet Theranos. Just wanted to make $. Kissinger, one of the investors, has a genocidal legacy, specially bombing neutral Cambodia during the Vietnam War. He and the US govt installed the Khmer Regime that mass murdered ~3M Cambodians, targeting the educated, artists, and the like. I digress. But DeVos, another disgusting investor, former Sec of Education, no credentials, no brains, just there to get for-profit schools off the hook for defrauding students. These investors couldn't care less on the impact on people. Just money, power, and greed. They only pulled the plug because they wanted their money back or cut their losses. This case should have been US (for the people) vs Theranos and investors. Or Theranos vs Investors. No regard for life lost or could have been lost.

Four of the counts against Holmes *were* for defrauding patients. She was *acquitted* of those counts by a low-information, low-intelligence jury. And now it seems that her defense lawyers are preparing to appeal based on the fact that the jurors convicted her with an improper understanding of how they were supposed to reach a verdict. *These are the very jurors that the defense picked* .
If anything wrong about the justice system has been exposed by this trial, it's that defense lawyers can pack a jury with idiots, then appeal a conviction because idiots were on the jury.

Our justice system mostly works for the rich. When people defraud rich folks, that's when the book is thrown at them.

Tyler is a hero in this. It is sad about the loss of his grandfather's support for so many years, but so glad to hear that his grandfather finally admitted that Tyler was not wrong at the end of his life, telling him the story of Elizabeth's claims to the Navy. Tyler stayed true to his claims regardless and now since she was found guilty of 4 counts and her prison time will be served concurrently she will still face the same sentence as if she were found guilty on all counts. Sounds like justice was served no matter how it came to be.

I commend you. You prevented SO many death from happening. You, Tyler, are a real hero.

His family spent over $400,000 in legal fees to defend him against the extremely aggressive and vicious legal campaign that Elizabeth Holmes and her counsel waged against Tyler, can you imagine?

The case against her on the patients was a lot weaker. The prosecutors added those charges mainly so they could put more sympathetic victims on the stand.

How could they not convict her on the 4 counts of defrauding patients? There were thousands of false tests that could have affected the patient's lives! I am still incredulous as to how this whole Theranos situation could have gone on for so long.

Kudos to Tyler for standing up to his moral conviction despite the negative impact between him and his family. It was a great 👍🏻 interview of a whistleblower but I wished that Gayle King would let him speak instead of interrupting him. It would be great to hear this young man’s thoughts on his decision to go forward publicly.

Kudos to Tyler for his courage and honesty. The world needs so much more of his kind of character. He is being generous and doesn't want to seem vindictive about her sentencing. But the truth is there are tons of people out there who will never learn and will always keep trying to get over like she did unless they are held accountable. The verdict in effect said, mess with the average person 's health and you get off, but swindling wealthy investors out of money crosses a line and you will be punished.
Exactly my thoughts. Some very rich people's money got reshuffled in an unpleasant way, surely none of them had to sell their mansion or change their lifestyle. There's worse people out there than Elizabeth Holmes, and who will never get charged for actually taking human lives. Covid is the prime example.
@@bigred4379 true. But he just had the courage to step out front as the whistle lower. It was already snowballing. The moment a disgruntled employee from one of the legit laboratory companies was fired, he/she would have dropped dime.
Then blame the jurors. It was their review of the evidence presented and decision not to convict on those particular charges. The government charged Holmes. It was the jurors (average citizens) who let her off.

This has nothing to do with the prosecution wtf are you on about. There were several charges for defrauding patients .... since this is a criminal case, all is needed is ONE juror to vote no for that non-guilty verdict. Who knows why the jurors couldn't come up with an unanimous agreement for those patient charges ...
If I had to guess, it's probably because the case for defrauding investors was simply stronger from the evidence and testimonies. Holmes spent A LOT of time with current investors and potential investors and the deceitful things she did to keep them hoodwinked was undeniable. Holmes spent no time with patients.

This is a video you show, say, to a class of upper primary schoolers or early middle schoolers for whom values are establishing during this time of their human development. Living by your values. Not easy but clearly satisfying and no doubt life changing. Not for the media attention he's receiving but for how it shapes your view of yourself overall and your relationship to others. I have been watching this Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos case since news broke regarding its false test results. I applaud Tyler Shultz for his integrity and his will to be a voice and advocate against bad science and its impacts to public health and safety, but unfortunately, at the cost to his professional and personal family relations. It must have taken a tremendous mental toll on him and the other Theranos whistleblower, Erika Cheung. I not only sympathize with these two individuals, I empathize with them. Unfortunately, there are more "charismatic" bullies like Holmes who pander these disinformation and unfounded science tactics to maintain annual cash flow and beat annual "earnings". This mentality is not relegated to the venture capitalist world like Silicon Valley. This mentality of "fake it until you make it" have infiltrated into the public/government engineering sectors as well. At least in this Theranos business arena, we are seeing the consequences of this "fake it until you make it" corporate mentality.

Good guy. He had family backing from his parents, and honestly, that’s a good thing because Theranos tried to bury this kid, and ultimately cost his parents $500K in legal fees. Erica Chung was another young girl at the company who blew the whistle. She was terrorized by them as well. People like Tyler and Erica give me hope for the future.

absolutely not true. If you were out on bail, you would continue on bail unless the judge determined that your bail should be revoked and you should be remanded (which is unlikely or you would not have been granted bail in the first place). You would get sentenced at a subsequent sentencing hearing and probably given a date and time to surrender to the authorities at a date other than the sentencing hearing. There are plenty of people of all races that have received this same treatment. Just like there are plenty of people of all races who are fugitives for not appearing based on the terms of their bail. Injecting race where it is not applicable only serves to divide and inflame.

I don’t get it either. I bet every tech company from now on will be varified by independent evaluators before they are ever invested in or purchased and investors will demand an on-site demonstration.
