Its basically a form of relief print making on a commercial scale. Before computers this is how printing was done. There are other techniques of print making from lithographs and Intaglio printmaking which is what I do. I do drypoint intaglio prints which is etching a plate with a needle words and illustrations and running that through a etching press for printing. Since the computer took over the printing industry printmaking is more of a fine art these days then a commercial form of printing production.
I do think this is a good video on how books were made back in the day and from this video it does look like that books was not that easy to mass produce even if they had allot more machinery and people working
