No, Blizzard have already pointed out they did not make it, they do not use it and it was made with no input from them at all, and specifically the Overwatch team literally did not even know it was being made. King, the woefully-overlooked third of the company, are the ones who made the 'diversity space tool' and put Overwatch characters (as well as Nintendo characters) in as examples for their GDC slide show. ABK have literally admitted this, publicly, and it has been widely reported on.
I swear, I love Pat and Woolie, but sometimes they and almost always their viewers seem to not read a single word beyond the headlines and prioritise getting in those sweet sweet reddit dunks over doing even the most basic degree of research.

I think my favorite thing about the diversity chart is that whenever a new hero is shown, you gotta think about where they would place them on the chart. Like you don’t think about how the character design looks anymore, you gotta think about how “diverse” they are.
They should be diverse.
It's extra terrible because I'd love to have a wide variety of characters, but then you look at a new character and it hits you that Blizzard crunched the numbers and put this one in because a calculator told them they had to.
It's so rough for the devs deapite them never using this. Blizzard really loves making things shit for devs, really make sure to cripple all PR and make the audience suspicious that the new character was made with very precise head measurements

@@Doople You cant say PR is throwing Devs under the bus when the devs are the one's being vocal on social media constantly about how much they love their token representations. Sure they might not have been using the data when someone suggested something like Symmetra being autistic for more virtue points. But the devs are more than ok with; not making it part of her design, story or character and instead just slapping a representation sticker on and calling it a day. I get it that devs sometimes have to make compromises they might not necessarily want for their story originally but it feels kind of dirty when the devs are constantly championing themselves on twitter for "their" representations.
You know what's more confusing? Doomfist doesn't have a missing limb. ALL OF HIS PROMO ART W/O THE GAUNTLET SHOWS HIM WITH BOTH HANDS!!

it's simple statistics. it's about how often you see them in media. it's not like some ranking. it's total malarkey, don't try to put that evil on me. but something having the same score doesn't mean those people are equal, or having a higher score means they're better.

This is such a unnecessary "throw the devs under the bus and cripple their legs too" move from Blizzard. The actual devs can never do anything without this coming up despite all of them stating they never used it.
Though this is still such an absolutely dunk on Bliz that I can't blame people taking the opportunity
They probably never used it... but they probably submitted a design, and the higher ups had a meeting. Afterwards, they gave the artist "some suggestions" on "how to tweak the design a little bit". Because let's be honest- you don't get something this detailed yet inconsistent unless there were several people up top with some very strong opinions that were really into the idea. So they might not tell you that this is being used, but they have this in the back of their head when they meddle.
@@lemeres2478 Well this came from King Games and they did a GDC talk in 2017. Overwatch came out in 2016 and King Games was bought in 2015. So I don't think there would be enough time for Overwatch's original cast to be subjected to the diversity chart. It seems like the diversity chart only used OW as a mock up and to cash in on "good" PR this year.
Honestly I think any fuck up on character design and story is all natural. Like I'm sure there is lots of factors but i think the devs just didn't implement their ideas well and often come off as pandering unlike something such as Street Fighter
I do still see people claiming this is all just to cover their union busting. But like, they just casually had this big a fuck up to leak to cover up union busting? Who know's how many more skeletons they got on hand to shoot off like chaff.

Touhou is a franchise that always comes to mind to me during these conversations, because despite being comprised literally entirely of fair skinned same-faced anime girls they still manage to use Japanese myths and legend as a base to make characters interesting through the design and personality
While they're mostly same faced, it's still amazing how some people manage to pinpoint the character and their game appearance just from the face, not even including hair.

Some people took a bunch of radioactive waste, buried it deep somewhere, and erected a field of spikes on top of it to ward off future people who find the site. The spike field being a warning anyone can understand, even if written language becomes forgotten knowledge.

This whole discussion reminds me of Zero Punctuation's review of Battleborn and Overwatch, where he said he preferred Battleborn because the characters felt like a collection of weirdos who hadn't been focus tested to hell.

@@harlannguyen4048 In an Extra Punctuation about Are Games Getting More Diverse he came to the testing hypothesis that by "white people" he meant dominant social group of the place making the game. So Persona 5 has "white" main characters, Ghosts of Tsushima does not because it's made by a foreign studio examining something that's not their culture.

@@tbotalpha8133 It also all started because Dwayne McDuffie made Black Lightning (and later Static Shock) who was DCs first Black Hero iirc. In fact a lot of the animated Black People with Lightning powers are just DC animated shows that couldn't use Black Lightning for licencing reasons. Of course Naruto solidified that Electricity powers belong to Black People

No, basically the Australian Outback was gifted to the Omnics; a bunch of people took exception to that and decided that blowing up the central reactor of an entire city was a good idea. So the outback is heavily contaminated, and that's where the radiation exposure comes from.

Sidenote- I think robots might also be susceptible to radiation. Radiation can mess up DNA by hitting it, and it doesn't go over so well when it hits your circuits with your code on it either.

I've had X-rays taken. Does that mean I get four points on this chart for "exposure to radiation"?
Modern phrenology chart aside, for a real answer, it actually depends. For example, certain dental scans are considered to have higher radiation emission than others, and therefore your exposure as a patient is higher. Therefore, you can only have a certain number of those scans per year, in accordance with radiation exposure safety for patients undergoing x-ray medical imaging. Source: I used to work in a clinic, so I heard about this fairly often from our radiology people, but I also have uniquely borked teeth (due to genetics lol), so I've also personally had some of these more complex dental scans, and I was only allowed three full skull rotation x-rays per year as they are far more powerful than your typical "take a couple pictures for the light bar on the wall" type x-rays, which don't expose you to as much radiation. EDIT: If you are a person who needs these more radiation-heavy scans fairly routinely, then you very well might have a special conversation with your medical team about radiation risks and long-term repeat x-ray risks, which can vary based on whatever health condition you are having x-rayed periodically, as well as the frequency and duration of x-ray imaging that you need. I hope that makes sense, my birthday is tomorrow so I'm already kind of drunk.

The thing is you can min max these tiers to get the most diverse result, so if you gamed the system you would get a result that's the antithesis of the intent. If everyone is the most diverse outcome, there's no longer any diversity.
Ironically the "meta" in this case would be quite diverse, because of how broad a lot of the high-scoring elements are.

Again, for all those in the back who still haven't heard it, or are willfully ignoring it: the Overwatch team did not create or use this tool. This is King's tool, and King just happened to 'borrow' the Overwatch characters when creating examples for their GDC presentation.

Yeah, this chart was made by a guy over at MIT. I want to know the scientific process that went into making a chart that is basically the unholy child of racism and eugenics.

Team Fortress 2 has 9 dudes, 3 are from the US, Spy is from France(or if you play with French voices on, he is from Britain) Sniper is born in New Zealand but raised in Australia, Pyro's origins are a mystery, and there's one guy each from Scotland, Germany, and Russia.
But I don't really think about that stuff all that much because they have enough personality on their own that their ethnicity or race seems like an extra detail put in after the fact.
There was *absolutely* criticism of TF2 for being a sausage-fest, back in the day. If Team Fortress 3 ever gets made, it will NOT be able to get away with having an all-male cast again. TF2 only gets away with it now because it is LITERALLY from a different era of videogames, back before feminist discourse in games took off, and having all-male or majority-male casts was accepted as normal.
Just because you don't feel left out by TF2's cast doesn't mean everyone is happy with it. It's a big reason why Overwatch's cast appealed to so many people early on.

The biggest sign that your company has a diversity problem is when you try to make a diversity tier list and no one that realizes this is a terrible idea has enough authority to speak out.

So I'm still not clear on whether this was surprising to anyone, and if so, what the previous idea of corporate D&I used to be. It feels like everyone is shocked to see billion dollar companies treating people like numbers on a graph and I thought we had established that by now.

And the disabilities chart is nonsensical. Seems to be how they perceive the character's ability to function in society? but that still makes no sense because none of the characters would fit that idea.

I appreciate being able to play a variety of characters just for the sake of it, as well as when different people have characters they relate to, less conventional setups, but these sterile ass corporations going down a checklist with their charts just gotta ruin everything, and make people more cynical against the good side of the cause.
At least they do go above and beyond to make it funny, I wonder if the people who had to do this were even serious.
I always thought Pharah has robotic limbs. Those joints on her suit looked like they did not fit human limbs inside them.
