There is the 'Beginning of Combat step - after the Precombat Main Phase before Declare Attackers. Admittedly, that is a step that only really matters to real competitive players. While not a missed thing, 5. B. is known as 'Cleanup Step' and also involves discarding to hand size if it comes to that.
Not An Evil Mastermind ya I knew about the "clean up" terminology, but wanted to use terms similar to the video. Thanks for the discard to hand size thing though. I forgot about that.
Not really - mostly just exists as a step during which things can be done, such as being the last chance to crew a vehicle before attacking with it or using an icy manipulator on an opponent's creature to prevent it from being declared an attacker. Most, if not all, of these things can comfortably be done at the end of the precombat main phase.
Actually, I remembered another thing right as i posted the previous comment - it's essentially similar to the upkeep step, sometimes things happen. An example of this from M19 would be Aethershield Artificer, who states that 'at the beginning of combat on your turn, target artifact creature you control gains +2/+2 and indestructible'. Hope that helps.
You can tell Becca is awesome. She has the personality of a genuine person. I love her facial expressions. I'm new to MTG. I know crazy. My friend has a drinking problem and his doc suggested getting into MTG to help him get away from drinking. So I am learning to play one way or another. Thanks for the awesome video Becca!!!!!

Welcome to the game! *Magic Arena* is a great way to start, as it provides a low-pressure environment to learn the ropes and experiment at no cost with others. You might also look for your local game store (LGS), if one is in your area, as that's where players will hang out and play in events. Once you're comfortable with the fundamentals, you might consider playing in a sealed or draft event at your LGS, where you can build a deck with sealed booster packs (generally the LGS holds these regularly). This is a good way to gain experience while building a collection (you keep the cards plus any prizes), and you benefit from playing on even ground. I'd also highly recommend the _Tolarian Community College_ channel, if you haven't found it yet. It has videos on a variety of topics that can help to improve your skills. Good luck!
Dan Creamer Exactly!! I have tried playing twice now with my husband who used to play quite a lot as a teenager. Both times it started out fun but his advanced knowledge of the game eventually leads to frustration for him because I’m such a noob. Takes me way back to the first time I played mtg..on a prerelease alpha deck. We had 4 player games with just 50 cards. Everyone drew from the same deck...we shuffled the discard pile after running out .. when someone died their mana went into the discard pile. After we could buy cards we played multiplayer.with full base decks(no booster yet). One guy bought a palate of legends and held them for 6 months.. he sold them and bought a house.
i can take him doing that for the rest of my life! also this was my question too? why is he not teaching new people to play magic since his show is literally just magic and he knows alot more than this woman who i cant hear even though my volume is on max.
You make mtg fun to watch and to learn, I like the passing of the turns,. Very creative my favourite is when she put it on her shoulder. I have never played. Love the animated actions e.g.. lighnig strik etc..
That guy makes it really hard for us new people to learn. He's too concerned with his comedy act to let the teacher teach us noobs. I'll keep looking for a better video.
I’ll add I did enjoy this nearly practice game of Magic. Becca Scott makes every thing she hosts very charming. I play Magic with the first cd-rom version of the game and have always been able to play a creature with haste once I laid it down. But I looked at the definition anyway to be certain. One source states: Haste is a keyword ability that allows a creature to circumvent summoning sickness. Creatures with haste can attack or use activated abilities with the or. symbol in the activation cost even if they have not been continuously controlled by a player since the beginning of that player's most recent turn. So based on that I believe I was correct. The card with haste comes from your hand untapped and can immediately attack. Otherwise it would act the same as any card with summoning sickness, waiting until your next turn. Small criticism but Hector became annoying too quickly. Hopped up on coffee who knows but too showy and jokey. I normally like all the guests Becca brings on but you can be humorous without trying to grab the spotlight. If he acted that way on my game night I’d tell him to go sit in the corner. 😄
Hahahahaaahaahaa I haven't bought any for a while since they all turned into pringles, but for those out there who liked curled cards Magic is the game for you
@numberphile actually made video about how many times you need to shuffle the deck for it to be random with each suffling method. It was pretty big number for that kind of shuffle method :)
I already have played multiple times and in tournaments and I game to different videos to see how they are showing new players how to play because I was thinking about making a tutorial video and this was like everything I wanted to cover so this way a great video good job really liked the video. I think this is a great way to encourage new players and your energy is so great and inviting.
Hi, pretty fun watching you play Magic the gathering for beginners. I thought it was so funny and it's true let's have fun, reading the flavor text is even more magical. I'll be watching your five videos of how to play Magic. I used to play a long time ago I just come back to it recently. Regards
This is a really cool video, I'm happy to watch it. When I have a Tournament at my event this summer I'll know more about the game itself to be able to commentate over the games. Thanks! Glad to see you all having fun!🌷🌸
I've read that the ideal amount of times you need to shuffle a deck of fifty-two cards is seven times. MTG decks usually are composed out of sixty cards so I would shuffle eight times just to be sure.
A few notes on the Q&A. I know you're simplifying for new players, but damage is *not* the same as "reducing" a creature's toughness. This isn't some trivial distinction, every player from hearthstone assumes this, but it matters all the time! For example, it's the premise of the "indestructible" keyword, which comes up about once per set. Damage is just tracked separately, and if that number is at least the creature's toughness, it is destroyed (and goes to the graveyard). Hence, an indestructible creature (which literally just means "cannot be destroyed") shrugs off lethal damage, but it does die to toughness *reduction* to 0. Ixalan wasn't a "core set". I know quibbling about terminology is silly, but core sets are products specifically designed ot be more intuitive for new players. M19 is a core set, and is the first core set in several years. Ixalan was just a regular large set. Also, this is just personal opinion, there's no right or wrong to play it, but just randomly cracking packs is a sure way to make Magic an unnecessarily expensive hobby. You'll almost never get a relevant card. Buy products that you have a plan to *use*! You can use packs you buy to draft with friends. Or you can buy some of the countless supplemental products that are meant to be played (from the premade decks, planeswalker or challenger, to the special draft formats like Conspiracy). If you get your joy from just cracking open a pack to see what's inside, then that's your choice, but the $4 for the off chance you find something useful is going to become absurdly expensive. if you want to upgrade your deck, buy the cards for it! If you just want a ton of cards to build a deck with, buy bulk cards! (Many competitive players at your local shop will have tons of draft chaff they don't know what to do with. Every few months I give away my extra to kids to frequent the shop). But basically, pick the format and style of play you and your friends want to do, and buy whatever product helps that. The answer is almost never just cracking boosters. (And if you do, at least do some sort of draft with them first!) Make your money go as far as it can. Magic is an absurdly expensive hobby without some care.
Nice video for new players. We all had to start at the beginning. Try a duel deck if you want more magic but don’t want to spend a stupid amount of $. I bought the Goblins Merfolk duel deck and it is great. $20 and I can enjoy playing a casual fun game without a massive time, and money investment. They are balanced decks with the bigger fun cards and no one has an overwhelming advantage. Play with your friends and keep it simple. Perfect way to have fun while enjoying a pint with a friend or two.
YOU ARE EXACTLY THE PERSON I AM LOOKING FOR!!!! I haven't played magic for a few years(like 5) so I got rid of all my cards because I am dumb. But I am now ready to get back into it and I was looking at the duel decks, are they good for people that are pretty much beginners and need a good refresher?
If its brand new so lands and spells divided do like 20 mash shuffles for your first couple gamea , and like 6 bridges that usually helps alot after those like 4 and 1 bridge is enough. Also upkeep isnt a hold over on older days lots of cards have an effect on it even currently
Just started becoming interested in Magic: The Gathering (spelled out as per someone commenting previously, and with punctuation) and was happy to see this in my feed. As much as I like this, I could do with a little less silliness and chit-chat and a little more focus on the cards. It wasn't until like 18:00 that I started wanting to pay attention. And I miss Sean.
he does about 1 video a week for the new spellslingers season. his game with ARI is fucking gold and got me really really wanting to play more MTG again
Yes, he does, and I'm watching him ATM. :) But I miss him in the context of seeing the dungeon and the game but not him on the right side of my screen. He's good at playing and explaining at the same time, while still having a good time.
Back in 1994 when i played and was a teen, I would say .00005% of the people were girls...same for video games....It's good to see that in 2018 alot more girls play magic and video games.
*slowly raises hand* I am of the girl gender anD I LIKE MTG AND LIKE- I'VE BEEN RAISED ON RPGS,MMOS,MMORPGS,JRPGS, DUNGEON CRAWLERS, AND COLLECTING GAMES AND A LOT MORE MKAY, also Memes They're great There's like no one here who plays mtg or fire emblem though
You should also mention all the steps of a turn, the simplification is relevant for beginners yes but you should've mentioned it so new players doesn't get confused when someone mentions "upkeep" etc. (Edit: just fixed misspellings)
My buddy got me into Magic about 9-10 years ago (I made a deck that destroys him everytime). I then got my little sister into playing this game (she made made a solid white deck of Angels and human soldiers) that kicks my butt into next week (depending on her first hand)
12:35 - Scientifically you are supposed to shuffle a deck 7 times to reach a good enough randomization that if you were betting someone you wouldn't have a meaningful edge based on knowledge of the order before hand. However, this assumes you're doing a riffle shuffle or something approximately equal to it. Unfortunately, Overhand shuffling really is not even close to as good as a riffle shuffle since you need about 10,000 Overhand shuffles to randomize to the same degree. Reference: th-cam.com/video/AxJubaijQbI/w-d-xo.html Note: Size of deck does matter in this, but 7-8 is still a pretty good rule even for 60 card decks.
Nope. Motivator does not have haste nor does it gain haste, unless you had another motivator. It can give target creature. Not itself. You cannot use motivator ability when it enters the battlefield due to summoning sick.
2021 - If I were a new player seeing this, I'd never want to try to learn. A "How to play" video (for any game) should be a lot more orderly and coherent then 3 people screaming over one another. That all comes AFTER you learn how to play.
Thank you, Colby, really appreciate your kind explanation ^_^ no wonder Becca are so excited when she realize what she have. I paused on 58:17 to read Nicol Bolas abilities, wow.. that's awesome
57:08 "That's a mythic rare!" *Hector shoving his card in her face and in front of the shot* "Alright...let's maybe do another close-up of Hector's card...again..." *Blinks hard at the camera while he prattles*
live in a tiny home and needed a non electronic game that didn't take up much space. husband and i played our first game today but we got a lot of learning to go because we got stuck alot with basic things like...unsure of how many creatures we are allowed to summon...what the dice was for...do we only draw one card or do we keep 7 cards at all time...what does target creature mean...
A huge footnote on all of these rules, coming from someone who's been playing for years: These are the rules, UNLESS A CARD EFFECT SAYS OTHERWISE. Card effects, within their own rulings, very often nullify or just overrule nearly every normal rule, to some very ridiculous extents Most famous examples: "you cannot win and your opponent cannot lose" and the exact opposite "you cannot lose and your opponent cannot win". Or my personal favourite "If you would draw a card with no remaining cards in your library, you win instead of lose"
Ok so I just started playing Magic and I got a 2019 core set for Christmas . I have played before but I completely forgot, so is it okay that I’m basically starting out with a 2019 core set or should I start with something else?
One reason I wanted to learn is because a friend of mine gave me a full black deck. Another reason is because the same dude gave me an autographed deck, which I apparently forgot about, but finding it again excited me and I wanted to learn how to play.
Perhaps. It bears debate, I think. Since we have a symbol now, it's going to come up. But will it come up at a beginner level? I mean... Waste is a basic land, and EDH is a popular format where mana rocks reside.
Wastes aren't in Standard, meaning beginners are less likely to run into them. They should know what that symbol means, but it doesn't come up at the very beginner level because they don't use many non-basic lands.
I don’t understand this since there was supposedly a Magic expert nearby. Hector drew a Goblin Motivator on his first turn which has haste. However Becca informs both of them that their cards cannot attack on the turn they are drawn because they have summoning sickness. Not Hector’s! Haste characters have no summoning sickness and can attack when summoned. How was this missed??
I was confused as well...but technically, goblin motivator does not have haste until you tap it. From my understanding...haste is an ability that allows a creature to attack without having to tap a creature. If hector did use this ability..goblin motivator would have already been tapped and therefore can no longer attack but would have haste next turn. At least that is what I think.
Incorrect. Motivator does not have haste. Motivator gives haste to target creature and since it entered the battlefield that turn its ability to give haste to a creature cannot be used because it has summoning sick and cannot be tapped when it enters the battlefield. You will be able to use its ability next turn.
The White Watcher a gate is just a dual land it can tap for one of two different colors. But it comes in already tapped so you'll have to wait an extra turn to generate mana from it.
this is why you should watch multiple tutorials, like with the discarding a card to make it 7 at the ending phase, other tutorials didn't add this, but still it's confusing like is it to keep your hand from having too much cards or discard one card regardl
Goblin Motivator does not have haste. Only an ability for a target creature to gain haste when motivator is tapped. Once motivator enters the battlefield you cannot use its ability because of summoning sick. You cannot tap it. Next turn you can use its ability for target creature to gain haste. This was played correctly

Really helpful and entertaining video for a new player. Even for a player like me returning after 18 years.
Buy single cards instead of buying boosters, and a pringles tube is a great replacement for a deck box.
Play any other game instead of buying MtG
Hahahahaaahaahaa I haven't bought any for a while since they all turned into pringles, but for those out there who liked curled cards Magic is the game for you
Hahahahaaahaahaa boooo this man!
yes, pringles tube
If you just double-sleeve you cards they dont curl.. also helps putting them in a deckbox together with those bags moisture absorbing pellets.
7:28 Is the ending of the explanation of how to play and the beginning of them playing
OOH!!! Totally didn't see Gina's win coming! What a turn of events! How turned tables have!!!
I love Becca and wish they would’ve just played without all the annoying interjections from Hector so she could explain more
right it made it harder to follow for someone that knows absolutely nothing
you guys need to make more shows !!!!!
@numberphile actually made video about how many times you need to shuffle the deck for it to be random with each suffling method. It was pretty big number for that kind of shuffle method :)
Hector nerfed my brain cells
Lmfao. He’s so cringey. I’ve seen many like em at the magic shops.
Nick Capella he’s what gives us the bad rep lmao
when start to get into mgt for a while now but dont know the rules this video really helps.
New favorite game lol, been playing since the mid 90s around when Ice Age came out.
This is awesome, thank you all for this! I’m just learning myself and documenting it on my channel so this helps!
I wish day nine would be there teaching as well, compelling other to hate blue with him as well
Ouch that hurt why you hating on blue
I hate blue.
Needed to learn this for my job. great video. explained well (:
game stop
I've read that the ideal amount of times you need to shuffle a deck of fifty-two cards is seven times. MTG decks usually are composed out of sixty cards so I would shuffle eight times just to be sure.
Becca's laugh is super cute! Really enjoyed this video, very informative!
Ziddletwix NERD
But I am now ready to get back into it and I was looking at the duel decks, are they good for people that are pretty much beginners and need a good refresher?
great series! I've been wanting to learn how to play. I'm eager to watch more!
@12:42 it isnt 52! i.e. 52 factorial . It is 30 factorial on the 30 card deck.
How to play Yu-gi-oh! OCG, Pokemon card game, Digimon card game, Bakugan, and Duel Masters? I've been looking for these.
Five seconds in and I'm in love 😂
i love how the dude said "permers learmet" and didn't break at all when they called him out on it. XD
That's one in two million.
seems about right.
*slowly raises hand* I am of the girl gender anD I LIKE MTG AND LIKE- I'VE BEEN RAISED ON RPGS,MMOS,MMORPGS,JRPGS, DUNGEON CRAWLERS, AND COLLECTING GAMES AND A LOT MORE MKAY, also
Memes
They're great
There's like no one here who plays mtg or fire emblem though
nice!
EternalDensity LOL
This video is amazing! What a great way to pull new players in with great in depth mechanics!!!
when i clicked on this video i was like "lord please help these people they might not be able to take it"
By knowing what 52! is, and its ridiculously large nature, I have a great deal of respect for you Becca.
57:41 That reaction was priceless!
You should also mention all the steps of a turn, the simplification is relevant for beginners yes but you should've mentioned it so new players doesn't get confused when someone mentions "upkeep" etc. (Edit: just fixed misspellings)
Becca when she´s leaving the studio:"My Precioussss!" :D
Thank you very much for making this video I just started playing and it was very helpful!!!
G&S for the save... Saving me from tons of videos to watch
Dayum! Coolest MTG card I've ever seen drawn!
All I can think of is all those Isolates, Bolas and Arcades just possibly sitting there in the Core 19 boxes behind them.....
anyone noticed at "6:41" the ogre blocks a flying vampire >.
Yup. I guess it's good for showing how damage works, but that Ogre should not have been able to block the vampire.
I could listen to her all day
My buddy got me into Magic about 9-10 years ago (I made a deck that destroys him everytime). I then got my little sister into playing this game (she made made a solid white deck of Angels and human soldiers) that kicks my butt into next week (depending on her first hand)
As a new player, where would I find one of these instructional playmats?
12:35 - Scientifically you are supposed to shuffle a deck 7 times to reach a good enough randomization that if you were betting someone you wouldn't have a meaningful edge based on knowledge of the order before hand. However, this assumes you're doing a riffle shuffle or something approximately equal to it. Unfortunately, Overhand shuffling really is not even close to as good as a riffle shuffle since you need about 10,000 Overhand shuffles to randomize to the same degree.

Note: Size of deck does matter in this, but 7-8 is still a pretty good rule even for 60 card decks.
Where can I go to get the free decks?
Wait, at 17:17, Goblin Motivator gains haste, so he could have attacked right then, am I right????
That all comes AFTER you learn how to play.
right it was hard to follow and want to continue watching which was very annoying
my local game store said Wizard stopped the welcome deck project, they are only giving out booster pack now
im still confused
ManaJack what if you have no friend?
Still confused lol
4:45 you've made a mistake. The Exile zone can also be manipulated. You should instead just mention that there exist cards that manipulate them etc.
TheForsakenCornflake ya also they way she said it she implied that all exiled cards go face down, which is incorrect.
Fortell
58:03 Actually, Nico Bolas was a dragon that turned into a planeswalker, BUT STILL YOU OPENED NICO BOLAS!!!! Congrats Becca! 😊
Colby Nelson uhmm actually it's *Nicol Bolas ;)
Is it so rare? newbie here
Thank you, Colby, really appreciate your kind explanation ^_^ no wonder Becca are so excited when she realize what she have. I paused on 58:17 to read Nicol Bolas abilities, wow.. that's awesome
he is over 20,000 years old and is the Thanos of Magic.
Nicol Bolas and anjani nice pickup
57:08 "That's a mythic rare!"
*Hector shoving his card in her face and in front of the shot*
"Alright...let's maybe do another close-up of Hector's card...again..."
*Blinks hard at the camera while he prattles*
Thank you for showing me how to play.😊
live in a tiny home and needed a non electronic game that didn't take up much space. husband and i played our first game today but we got a lot of learning to go because we got stuck alot with basic things like...unsure of how many creatures we are allowed to summon...what the dice was for...do we only draw one card or do we keep 7 cards at all time...what does target creature mean...
A huge footnote on all of these rules, coming from someone who's been playing for years:
These are the rules, UNLESS A CARD EFFECT SAYS OTHERWISE. Card effects, within their own rulings, very often nullify or just overrule nearly every normal rule, to some very ridiculous extents
Most famous examples: "you cannot win and your opponent cannot lose" and the exact opposite "you cannot lose and your opponent cannot win".
Girlfriend got me back into magic so went out and got a deck builder's toolkit :)
For the community at large, Colorless Mana is a thing now. We should be teaching this concept in 101 videos like this.
No. It was only relevant to Oath of the Gatewatch where colorless mana was relevant.
I'd say that's more for a 202 intermediate course, but I see your point.
Colorless mana is evergreen. Mana rocks and anything that produces colorless, plus abilities that produce "any color" mana don't produce colorless.
Those playmats are insane ! Where can I buy those ?
So in my deck ima go get more cards but all I have for land is a Gate what does a Gate do?
The White Watcher a gate is just a dual land it can tap for one of two different colors. But it comes in already tapped so you'll have to wait an extra turn to generate mana from it.
this is why you should watch multiple tutorials, like with the discarding a card to make it 7 at the ending phase, other tutorials didn't add this, but still it's confusing like is it to keep your hand from having too much cards or discard one card regardl
is this the end of it? i really like the show host. she needs to make more of these vids and maybe even play magic on one of these shows.
On arena, I can’t summon 5 mana creatures even when I have 5 land card on the table?
Very very fun video!
I'm too fucking stupid to understand any of this. But I want to learn so bad lmao
Where do I place my cards? If I summon a creature or a land where do I place them?
So can sombody explain the whole blocking thing happens and when you block with more than one creature
Where do you get your Magic: The Gathering products?
I’m still confused 😂
Got into MTG a few years ago but dropped out, seemed complicated at first. May get back in now that I play Hearthstone ( which is Magic simplified)
This chick got me into magic (2018)
