My family and I arrived at Yosemite this same day (Jan. 6,23’) for our first trip to the National Park and we had a full moon the first night that rose over Half Dome. I was prepared to see landmarks but what Yosemite gave us just an awe inspiring, incredible, unimaginable experience, it took our breathe away. The snow covered trees, the waterfalls flowing so full, and the mountains were so beautiful. We spent the weekend in Curry Village in Stoneman Cabin, very simple room with beds. The village provides everything you need, food, coffee, drinks and a store for incidentals. We took a Saturday morning hike to Mirror Lake and our oldest son proposed to his girlfriend, she said Yes! What a wonderful trip giving us a memory of a lifetime! May God Bless you like he did us on our trip to Yosemite!
Congratulations to your son and future daughter in law. Yosemite, like the Grand Canyon, cannot be described in words. They must be experienced. My wife and I are fortunate enough to live 2 hours west of the park and frequently drive up just for a picnic and a day hike. 2 hours in the other direction and we’re at the beach. We will wake up in the morning and ask over breakfast, where do we go today. As we are both retired and still surf, this makes for tough decisions. Glad you had a memorable visit.

After a rockslide closed a section of Highway 140, Caltrans will partially reopen it tomorrow that accesses Yosemite National Park, but motorists can expect long delays. Caltrans reports, “Crews are making excellent progress clearing the slide and stabilizing the slope.” The rocks came tumbling down on Sunday, January 15th, temporarily closing Highway 140 near Briceburg and closing the roadway from the Bug Hostel to Cedar Lodge between Midpines and El Portal, as earlier reported here. Caltrans advised that “clean up on the slide is ahead of schedule,” as this past Sunday crews began hauling material away from the site. They added that barring any setbacks, one-way traffic control will be in place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 24, until both lanes of the highway are fully reopened. Caltrans warns that travelers “should expect extended delays.” www.mymotherlode.com/news/local/2933749/hwy-140-in-mariposa-county-to-partially-reopen-tuesday.html
Weather in May is usually warm during the day but cold overnight, with average highs in Yosemite Valley in the 70s and lows in the 40s. While rain and snow are possible, they're not very common.
@@alteredmood april/may is the best time to visit. i did an RV trip there a few years ago in april, camped at lower pines. the air is still chilly but not freezing so the snow will be melting and the waterfalls and rivers will be at full power. there's still a little snow on the ground but not enough to be a problem and the chill air is great hiking weather. if you havent reserved an RV spot yet you should start looking now. likely they're already fully reserved; you just have to get lucky and wait for someone to cancel.
The slide happened on Sunday (Jan. 15), but cleanup efforts that are expected to take a couple of weeks have forced Caltrans to temporarily close a section of Highway 140 near Briceburg in Mariposa County. Caltrans reports that it has initiated an “Emergency Director’s Order to safely clear the slide, stabilize the slope, and make necessary road repairs.” State road officials added that the highway will remain closed until the slope can be “stabilized enough to safely allow traffic to pass through the area.” The roadway is closed from the Bug Hostel to Cedar Lodge between Midpines and El Portal. Caltrans advises that it is expected to remain closed for approximately 1-2 weeks. Motorists can still access Yosemite National Park via Highway 120 in the west or Highway 41 in the south.

Do you have any suggestions on how to go there with a rental car? Most rentals dont allow tire chains.
Rent a 4 wheel drive SUV.
Even with a 4x4 wheel suv you are required to have chains with you, you don’t have to have them on unless the road conditions are impassable without the chains.
Always check current road conditions www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

ROAD UPDATE: Rockslide blocks access to Yosemite via Highway 140 www.uniondemocrat.com/news/article_4ad4b15c-979c-11ed-a6c9-4383e5096554.html
The slide happened on Sunday (Jan. 15), but cleanup efforts that are expected to take a couple of weeks have forced Caltrans to temporarily close a section of Highway 140 near Briceburg in Mariposa County. Caltrans reports that it has initiated an “Emergency Director’s Order to safely clear the slide, stabilize the slope, and make necessary road repairs.” State road officials added that the highway will remain closed until the slope can be “stabilized enough to safely allow traffic to pass through the area.”
The roadway is closed from the Bug Hostel to Cedar Lodge between Midpines and El Portal. Caltrans advises that it is expected to remain closed for approximately 1-2 weeks. Motorists can still access Yosemite National Park via Highway 120 in the west or Highway 41 in the south.
