The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

The very first command I taught my dog, even before LOOK AT ME and SIT was the LEAVE IT command. That really helped with the urge to chew. He was also almost done teething when I adopted him from the shelter. Now he chews on the toys I give him, or sometimes my clothes if I'm stupid enough to leave them on the floor. Thankfully, playing fetch for a good 30 min every morning and evening plus running through our tricks and learning new ones has helped a lot with controlling unwanted chewing.

I was really up set with china .. so I looked you up on Here.. thanks.. I took her out to play with my dad's out side dogs.. and she loved it.. afterwards and the rest of the day China did not touch any more Flip-flops.. I'll keep u posted.. again thank you and I plan to watch all your videos.. because I'm planning to get her trained to be a therapy dog. and take her to rest homes and such

I'm a huge fan of brandon's tv show so it wasn't surprising that his book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSw1k29V8f0aNwyGI6qRGYJc3E4Y4Eoxy is also excellent! With treats, my dog has learned most of the seven common commands (sit, stay, come, down, heel, off and no). Brandon's love for all animals is baked into every chapter of the book. If you have a puppy or an older dog, i would highly recommend reading every word of this book as it will be a source of pride for you and your dog.

I have a dog and when he was a puppy and used to chew stuff up, me or my mum, whoever discovered it would just tell him "no, bad boy" and eventually he would just drag things on the floor but not destroy them. Then if we went out to him in his room and everything was where it should be, we'd praise him and treat him and then he stopped doing it altogether. We also did the same thing when he weed on the floor, we'd say "bad boy" and put him out into the yard and if he weed there he'd get praised and treats :)

Hi Zak! This vdo is just in time. It helps reminding me that I am not the only one going thru this! My 4 month old puppy is chewing about everything but her toys!... I am indeed constantly with her all the time, crawling on my knees most of the day, get her attention and keep her from chewing almost everything she lays her eyes on (but her puppy eyes are just so adorable and irresistible :) ) and I absolutely agree about the 'mind set'. Once you've got that, things are just more enjoyable and moving forward. Thanks so much - looking forward to the next one.

    Hello Zac,
Just wanted to say I love your videos . I think you and your wife make a great team getting all this stuff together and teaching people how to take care of their dogs.
When I brought my puppy home he like to Chew on the fan cord or he would fine electric cords. So I went to the Pet store and got this spray call Stop Chew ,.. I think it was made with hot peppers or some thing like that , and it must of had a bad taste. But it work really well.
    I also like Nylabone Chew.
Guys keep up the good work !

Zak we have a 9 month old rescue dog (Lab/staff) who we have had some seperation axiety issues with . She has now calmed down alot after some one on one intense training, as there were also some anger issues with her barking at strangers knocking on the door or growling at the wife or children if they were to walk in unexpected. She has a large metal create to sleep in with the plastic tray(distroyed) which we have now placed in the garage due to her messing a few times indoors. She also has a bed in the front room where she can relax in the evening with the family, so is only in the crate overnight. Any chew toy or bedding we place in with her is destroyed. I no longer lock the cage as she managed to get out by prizing the bottom of the front door open, so instead she has roam of the garage but is chewing shoes and anything she can get. If I was to shut the crate she would again get through the metal and maybe suffer injury. I am a stay at home dad so am walking her at least 3 times a day for no less than an hour along our lovley beach, where we meet lots of other dogs, which I could not do before we had some training, Her last walk is around 10pm and her first at 6am. How can I get her to stop chewing? I know she likes us but im not confident of leaving her in the house while we sleep cause of the chewing. We have plenty of chew toys scattered around the garden and garage, that she uses throughout the day. I just think she wants to be indoors with us at night. I believe she has a lovely nature generally, and is great with our young boys. she was advertised for sale on Gumtree, the house was awful and she was probably being brought up as a guard dog, as there were two other mastive type dogs there who seemed to be bullying her. I believe ive done the right thing in giving her a loving home, but really need to stop this chewing over night as ive run out thongs!!!!!

Hi Zak. We were Louisiana Transplants to Louisiana. we lived there 10 years. We Lived in Kenner and the Hubby worked in Bridge City at Northrop Grumman. Some of your videos look like on the levee in Kenner.
I'm here because we Just adopted a female 5 month old brindle puppy. Friends of Homeless animals thought she was first a Chihuahua, then some other paper work stated terrier. Well, we got her tested and come to find out, she's half Catahoula Leopard dog and Amer. Staff. Terrier. Her first week with us, she cleared the wooden baby gates leading to both front rooms... she was about 12" high and 18lbs. Now a month later... she's now 28lbs and 19" tall. (gettin' big) ! Well when we take her to the back yard to potty, she's ALWAYS trying to chew on the leash or trying to take the leash away from us. How do we get her to stop ?

Looking at this video, it's obvious that I did and have been doing this all wrong. I adopted my black lab/chow mix at 3 and half months old. He is now 10 months old and the destructive chewing is literally driving me insane. To the point of tears. I've had dogs my whole life, and have never had to deal with this situation. We cannot afford a trainer so I am so glad I came across this video and will look for your others, as well.

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT he barks A LOT. . So, leaving home is always a challenge for us.

We just rescued a Catahoula Bulldog mix last week. She is only 19 weeks and was obviously abused. We have to be more careful approaching her. She trust our girls more than she trust us. She has been so laid back we trusted her too quickly and now I have a whole in my couch and a ripped throw pillow. When we say no (firmly, not scary or anything. I normally clap my hands and say 'no chew.') she runs and hides and then is afraid to let us pet her. It breaks my heart. She goes limp on a leash and she is almost 40lbs. I'll be trying keeping her tied to me and we're getting a crate today. I'm really enjoying your videos! thank you.

My dog used to chew shoes when I was away. I just started exercising him before I left home and tried to come back at least once during the day for a quick fetch. Also, I noticed that he liked chewing stuff on the carpet, which was right next to the shoes... So I bought a new, more comfy carpet for the living room and always left a few different chew toys on it, so he could pick his favorite. And when I'm away, I only leave the living room light on, so he hangs out in that room more. He hasn't chewed shoes in months :)

It’s very easy for us to lash out at our dogs, 9mo malamute/husky and 17mo cur/heeler. They have been very destructive and I fear we might have to give them away but I hope these tips can turn that around. They love to eat fabric like bed sheets/towels, plastic and mulch.

Hey Zac, I am so happy I found your video. I have a Boarder Collie named Sadie. We have had her for 5 months now and she just turned 7 months old. When we first got her I was able to kennel train her and use a key word to potty train her. She actually caught on very fast. However I noticed when she started to teeth she started to chew up everything she can get her mouth on. This includes her, dog bed, bones, blankets for her dog house, bully sticks, chew toys, balls, garden hoses and much, much more. We play fetch with her and take her on up to 3 mile walks but nothing seems to help. She has also chewed many of her leashes and her walking harness. Any ideas on what I can try next. I really would love to have her in doors for the winter but I cant have her chewing on everything. Sadie is going to be spayed next month at the age of 8 mo. I have heard that might help with her high energy, is that true? As for now I am going to limit her space in the yard like your video suggest and see how that goes. Any info you have would be great!! Thanks a million.

Since I am disabled and around and she will be my service dog she gets lots of supervision and training with play. Her jumping and nipping is persistent, but it is part of her breed and she is teething terribly. Worst case I have seen, including half her muzzle getting so swollen we had to give her ice for 1/2 a day, no infection, just a lot of change for her. She is better now and half the teeth are in and beautiful, she is on a raw diet and wow what a difference. Wish I knew what I knew now, so we all eat better. She has many things to chew and she even helps to pick up sticks and carry them, appropriate to her of course.

My dog used to eat socks when I first got him (he was a year old). He has always gotten a lot of exercise and I didn't let him out of my sight for even a second for probably about a year after I adopted him. He still managed to snag a couple socks every now and then but I would always "trade" with him for a toy and I would play with him with that for a little while so that the toy would become more fun than the socks.

I have a 10 month old border collie/lab mix that chews everything!!! I wonder if a lot of her chewing is from anxiety, when I leave for a while and come back, my whole bedroom (especially the bed!) and kitchen are covered in trash! I usually have my trashcan blocked (except for today-left the house without thinking about it!) but sometimes I have recyclables by the door which she's been chewing on, and the other day she must have gotten on the counter and knocked over some items for my compost bin!! I've bought her toys, but none of them last for long, she's even chewed up a Kong toy and a really thick fabric toy that's supposed to last quite a while! I wish they had kevlar toys, it's probably the only fabric she couldn't chew through!! I've been trying to follow your advice on training, I'm hoping with more practice and consistency (something I've been lacking!) she'll be a "better" behaved dog (for lack of a better way to say that!) I've been told that her type will be very active her whole life, the only thing I can say is that I end up with all the fun! (I mean that sarcastically, but it's alright!!) Do you have any suggestions for dog toys? Thanks for all your help!!!!

My eight and a half month old dane/blue heeler/lab mix who hasn't given any signs of chewing or destructive behavior in the past just started in the last week. Up until now other than anxiety issues, she has been good absolutely loves her toys, all kinds and has used them appropriately and even invented her only little games with them, no destruction. She graduated out of the crate into the bedroom behind a closed gate as she didn't do well in the crate, that was 2 months ago and she has done well until the beginning of the week. Since the beginning of the week she has four times stripped the bed of the sheets and blanket. She has completely shredded two full sets of flannel sheets and also destroyed a fairly expensive quilt. She sleeps on this bed at night and never attempts to doing anything and she doesn't do anything any other time during the day, only when she has been shut behind the gate and I have to leave her. She's not by herself, she has her 6 year old Newf/Duck Toller mix sister with her and a basket of toys. HELP !!!!!!!!!

I have had a Pomeranian for about 2 months now, she was a rescue. I think her old owner use to hit her. She is about 2 years old, and has a ton of energy. I am a grad student and sometimes have to leave her at home in a gated area, she has begun to find ways out and causing even more destruction. Chewing up shoes, coaster, and even vases and knocking the dirt out. I have been training her and trying to do the best I can, but not being home enough is really affecting her any advice? I have been playing with her in the mornings and coming home during lunch. Playing fetch with her, buying various chew toys and bones to keep her occupied. Have even begun taking her to the dog park, but it almost seems to be making her behavior worse. Any advice on where to go from here? should I begin re-training her making sure all the basics are there?

She can only chew small shavings off the elk antlers, but the bully sticks she can chew right through & get a big chunk. That is dangerous for her intestines. Plus, she LOVES the elk antlers! They keep her busy chewing!

    Hi Zak!
Thanks to your videos our new puppy from the county shelter is a genius!!! She will listen to everything we teach her and is very well behaved. When someone comes to our home though, she will go "werewolf" and start bite and latch on to their arms or growl. Even if we try to interrupt her by telling her to sit she won't listen at all! Help! We can't have anyone at our house anymore. She is 4 months old, a lab shepherd mix

Lily Hoang My dog has the same problem. He is a year old Labrador Retriever and whenever somebody comes over he will be protective and attempt to bite them and bark like crazy. What we’re doing is putting him in his crate when someone comes over. We have the guests stand by the crate with us, and we might take their jacket or something, and have him smell it. After he stops barking we get treats and have the guest drop some treats in the crate for him. If he continues to bark, we will tell him “its ok” or “be nice” and maybe hug the guest to show him that we are fine with that person. If he gets comfortable enough, we will have the guest go upstairs and put him on a leash. We will also get many treats, having the guest throw some to him. We might also take him to the backyard, close the gate, and have the guest stand on the other side of the gate. We will let him smell them through the gate and have them give him treats. We make sure we never trust him even if he already knew the person and was playing with them another day because he still might go “werewolf” on them.

Just discovered your videos. Great attitude and enthusiasm! We have had a Jack Russell puppy for exactly a month (he's 3 month's old). Zak, what is your feeling about clicker training and Martingale collars? Thanks! Jeff

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Clicker training is great and I have several videos on clicker training. I have heard people often use Martingale collars for certain dogs prone to slipping out of their collar, but I do not recommend correcting a dog by this or any other collar. I do not ever really recommend them, but don't find them particularly offensive.

can't wait to try this with my dog Shiloh. question - you say a puppy should never be unsupervised and I am with her a lot so I'm finding when I do have to leave her alone she whines/barks. How do I balance keeping her with me and yet teach her it's ok when I'm not with her?

We have a lab mix that we have adopted that is aprox 2 years old. We also have a
1 1/2 year lab mix that we have raised from a puppy. They love to play together. We have a doggy door which allows them access to the backyard. They keep tearing it off and chewing it up. We have tried many different things to make the door strong but they enjoy destroying it. What can we do to keep them from destroying the doggy door? They usually do it when they are playing.

hey I have two Springer spaniels that are from the same litter. one male, one female. they won't stop going into my garden and ripping up the plants. and another thing is, they live chewing on cords. what do I do? I have soft chew toys like the stuffed animal, I give them pig ears, and cow hide. and every once in a while I'll give them corn on the Cobb with the corn eaten off already. I also will give them pork roast bones. so do you have any advice?

I have a question. How do you know when your puppy is ready for freedom? I have a three, almost four month old shih tzu puppy, who I know is nowhere near ready for it. We've gotten him a playpen, and he likes it, but I was wondering when he would be able to graduate from the playpen.
Also, a bit off topic, but how could you teach them to jump up on the couch? I know that Max (the puppy) is tall enough to hop up on our couch, but he doesn't seem to think so. We want him to be able to jump up so that he can play with the older dogs. How can we do this?
    Thank you :)

I have a 4-5 month old puppy, we don't know his breed since he is mixed and he was a rescue. He has so much energy and lately he's been very fuzzy and has started to chew on our furniture. He's a smart dog and he understands us when we tell him NO but he still continues to do it :(

I'm getting a new puppy next week and have no idea what to do with her for her first night home. I will not have enough time to introduce cage training to her before it's time to go to bed and I don't want her to be scared or afraid of the cage next time I need to put her in. Should I leave her in an open dog bed on the floor of my bedroom with the door closed or should I still put her in a cage by my bed even though she hasn't been in a cage before. I desperately need your help!!!!

We have just adopted a greyhound who is 18months old. He is learning to live as a pet. Do you have recommendations to stop chewing and biting when over excited or wants to be feed. This behavior is mainly occurring during the 30 minute wait time after exercise. We are in the process of training him as he has never had any training in the sense of pet training. He never raced but went through racing training.
Suggestions would be amazing. I know he is going through the rebellious adolescent stage of growth but his nips really hurt and going limp and playing hurt just hypes him up more.

Hi Zak! My 8 months border collie is still chewing and manytimes eating everything she finds (from rocks to plants). Eventhough I call her attention when doing something wrong without any problem, its like she waits to be alone to make holes in the garden and turn everything upside down.
As she is alone for a few hours a day, what should I do to let her entertained with her toys while I'm out?

Zak, We have a 14yr. old Bassethound and several weeks ago an 11 week old JRTerier entered our life. We have had the JRT about a month and I am starting to view you videos to help me with training. BUT, my big concern right now is that the pup is nipping the hound and makes a high pitched squeal that is driving our Basset crazy(he is a nervous wreck). I am hoping that these dogs will be wonderful companions and that I will be able to "add life" to our Basset. Right now the hound's pacing is driving us crazy and I think that I am shortening his quality of life rather than extending it. If you don't have a video discussing the addition of a puppy into an elderly dog's life, it may be a good subject matter. But I need some positive suggestions. Thanks! --Jeff

Zack, my family and I decided it was time to rescue a pup. We went to our local shelter with the mind set of getting a small dog, but it didn't go that way. We fell in love with a 1 1/2 yr old Bluetick Coonhound. We decided to adopt her, but put her on a 24 hour hold because we decided to dog proof the house before bringing her home tonight. Now, we were warned that she does chew up anything plastic and blankets. I believe that is because her previous owners had her in a crate for 9 hours a day. But we decided to get her a few Kong balls and some bones to chew on. We are going to continue with the crate but only at night (we go to bed very late and wake up very early). My question to you is, do you believe that she will be sufficiently distracted with her new toys at night that she can out grow this chewing fase? We want to eventually leave her out of the crate at night but fear she will chew up everything. Xan this be fixed in an older dog? Anyway. thank you for the video, it was very informative.

My year old puppy likes to chew up any type of bed that we give him. He is only in our laundry room with access to the backyard to play, run around, and potty. Would a crate me a better option? We also have a 6 year old dog that shares the laundry room with him when we are out of the house.

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT he chews things A LOT. . So, leaving home is always a challenge for us.
My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

I'm currently dealing with destructive chewing/eating. This dog just loves to eat wooden furniture. Pryor to getting a dog, I watched a lot of your videos to prep myself for when the time came, to have some knowledge on what to do. So one day, my husband showed up without notice with a puppy that he bought from his friend which she told him to pickup right away,..at only 3 weeks old. Yeah, HE DID A HUGE MISTAKE and I told him right on the spot and even told him to take her back, but told me no, that it was his not mine!! Anyways, I was being super strict with the dog because I was aware of the possible behavior issues due to her being pulled from the litter at such a young age. But every time I would apply the all the things you said, from play pen, to tying to my waist, to clapping whenever she did something bad, even making a loud bap-bap sound whenever she was gonna do something bad. But here he came telling me to leave her alone every single time. Needless to say, he's paying for his mistakes, and I'm suffering along with it. I still watch your videos in hopes that if in the future I get MYSELF a puppy, that I can train it the best I can and he can't tell me crap because it will be mine!!!

In the introduction there was a dog (I think a corgi) on a long training leash that was attached to the collar. Please don't attach them to a collar, it can damage a dog's neck severely if they suddenly start running and will crash full speed into the leash/collar.

My dog just turn 2 and he is crate trained, but I want to be able to leave him out to roam around while I'm gone instead of always being in the crate. Most times when I have left him out of the crate he has destroyed a lot of things, from ear puds to textbooks. I don't think it is because he is bored since I play fetch with him twice a day till he tired. Some times I think he is just mad that I left him and didn't bring him with me. He is a blue heeler. Is it just that some dogs will always have to be crated when you are out or is this teachable? Thank you!

Regarding the chew toy suggestions: A baby toy--a stuffed butterfly--was left in our yard accidentally, so I gave it to the dog. The baby toy is intact after weeks of puppy (9 months) chewing while regular stuffed animals haven't lasted more than a couple hours. As an added bonus, the butterfly has something crinkly inside the wings, which the dog loves. I never thought about baby toys being more durable. There are also plastic parts, but I've removed them.
    My bad: it's actually a firefly! www.amazon.com/Lamaze-Play-Freddie-Firefly-Along/dp/B000I2Q0F4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414541748&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+butterfly+toy

heh, I was just really lucky and my puppy was never a chewer, even when teething. She was a Sheltie, and she just was never interested in anything to do with chewing. Fetching on the other hand, she just did completely naturally with no training!
