  • In this programme, an anonymous owner’s collection of 400 watches from which Jonathan Hills at Sotheby’s selects six watches spanning 300 years. They include a watch made in London the year before the Great Fire and a 1973 watch by George Daniels, the man who single-handedly revived the English watch-making tradition but insisted on making every single component himself. There are images of the workings of each watch; not only the mechanisms but also the silver and gold repoussé decoration of the cases.

I have to say that this is the just the most entertaining, beautiful documentary I have ever seen. I do not believe that to be any exaggeration at all.

I'm in awe of the beautiful workmanship on all the watches shown and learned something new: I didn't know England was famous for watches although I was familiar with the term Greenwich Mean Time and in my mind thought of it as '0' or the base from which all other time in the world was calculated. Any better definition, explanation is welcomed.

The seventeenth-century emerald pocket watch discovered in the Cheapside Horde is worth mentioning as well. "The Cheapside Hoard, a dazzling haul of almost 500 pieces from the Elizabethan and early Stuart eras, was uncovered by a group of labourers under a cellar floor in London's Cheapside in 1912.
Excavations at the site found evidence of damage caused by the Great Fire of London, dating the ‘priceless’ collection to pre-1666, and it is believed to have been hidden about 350 years ago." - DailyMail

Beautiful stuff. The Daniels are pretty amazing. He actually invented the famous and ultra accurate Co-axial movement that eventually was bought by Omega and they have been installing in almost all their watches ever since. However, and despite I understand this is a tribute to british manufacturers, the real deal is in the swiss makers, well, you did show the Patek Philippe grand complication here but for example, Abraham Louis Breguet was one of the most famous makers, official provider of the Royal Navy and who had no other than the Queen Maria Antoniette de France as one of his first and most famous customers. Then of course Patek Philippe, but the list would be missing an important one without Vacheron Constantin. Their designs with landscapes, birds and other things in exquisite enamel miniatures are simply untouchable. Thanks a million for sharing this beautiful collection.

Why glove in one hand but not in the other if both hands are touching the watches?

If you asked me countries famous for watches i'd say Switzerland not England. I think most would and that speaks volumes.
