I don't use compression that much. Mostly either to add sustain, or to emulate a specific song. I've heard for years people saying "you have to add compression to make it sound more like a tube amp." True, but maybe that's a tube amp flaw, that it compresses. If I like a broader range of the sonic palette (uncompressed), but it doesn't sound like the Holy Tube Amp of Antioch, then fine, I like what I like. I get what you're saying about keeping peaks in check though - that makes a lot of sense.
The compression block maybe added to it sounding like a real tube amp, but with the FM3 as you adjust the gain or volume the amp has it’s own compression to emulate a real amp. I didn’t use compression in creative ways in my pedalboard days. It was just on for cleans/slight gain or it was off. For the FM3 its def a different story though
