I'm loving Lee slowly being able to pick up on certain undertones due to understanding certain Japanese words. Once you get more accustomed to the particles, you'll even be able to pick up some implications that come from sentence structuring! It's really satisfying - studying and suddenly understanding something in the real world with knowledge from your studies.

@@YaBoyRockLee I found that reading a text you already know the sound of helps. What I personally found to be the best practice is alongside trying to memorise the kana, trying to read children's books, e. g., folklore like momotarou, kaguya-hime, or even manga. They should have a moderate amount of the simpler kanji characters in them with furigana-that is-their pronunciation written hiragana in small font near said kanji characters. I believe, from my limited experience, this exercise will you with memorise the kana and kanji, enrich your vocabulary, and give you a hang of the sentence structures. It may seem like a hassle, but you can make it not to be. You could, maybe, get yourself a physical copy of a children's book in japanese and keep it around where you chill. It really pays off in the end, trust me. Also, a tip: try to make sense of a sentence by finding the word meanings without trying to connect a sentence with the translation. That is better because both languages have different ways of saying something. As an example: "Genki desu ka?" is very popularly translated to "How are you?", where-even though both have the same effect-the direct translation "Well is (you)?" lets us know that the sentence is actually saying "Are you well," to which, the answer is most frequently, "Genki desu" ("well is"="I am well"). So, it's more difficult to make connections between a japanese sentence and its translation. Also, don't translate the particles as I did in the example. If your brain burns in their connection with English words, the "exceptions" will be a bigger obstacle than they need to be. You read all that? Damn! I was not expecting you to read all that. Or did you just read the first and last paragraph? Oh, well, anyway, thanks for giving meaning to my action!
@@YaBoyRockLee I found Tofugu's hiragana and katakana guides very helpful. It let me learn both in a few days. After that I started Wanikani to learn Kanji and some vocab. Once I get to level 10 I'm going to start the Genki text/workbooks. If you have time you can also try out satori reader. It is a library of books and articles with translations for every word and sentence. It has kanji curated to your knowledge from wanikani built in, so it only shows furigana (the small hiragana above kanji for pronunciation) for any kanji you don't know.
Spoiler-free clarification: Cid actually puts a lot of effort into being a mob The whole "confessing to the princess" thing was planned, so he had an excuse to not get himself a girlfriend during his school days, as it would interfere with his Eminence In Shadow activities By getting the lowest score _on purpose,_ he had a perfect cover to be rejected by the princess, which in turn would be his excuse to not get a GF, as in "i got too scarred by a bad rejection and gave upon dating" Also, when Cid jumped in front of the truck, it was because he actually felt magic and jumped at it, just when the truck happened to pass over there, but he did felt magic, and thats how he was capable of detecting magic as a newborn

just some brief context about that "suicide" jump into the track-kun scene basically, he was trying all sort of things to attain magical power, such as meditating beneath a waterfall, crucifixed himself onto a cross, etc etc... one of the way he was trying was bashing his head against a rock (in the manga it was a tree, and he was full naked at the time too). and at the end of it he mistaken the light of track-kun with the light of "enlightenment", and running full speed towards it while shouting "magicmagicmagicmagicmagic" and ended up in isekai so he kinda fulfilled his dream

About the subtitles using Fido when she refers to him, in Japanese you actually hear her using Pochi. There’s no real meaning behind it, the idea is that they’re both default names you use for dogs basically, Pochi for Japanese and Fido for English. The person that translated the Japanese Dub and placed the English Subtitles just chose that as the best way to communicate the concept. As you basically figured out.

Truck kun come to visit The Princess not acknowledging her hardwork is like disavowing his own dedication (of becoming an eminence in shadow/Edgy in the dark) which is why he say he like the princess sword.
It’s less he cares about her fencing and more he feels like she’s dissing his own fencing. The scene from the LN is slightly different. Cid says ‘if it’s true that your fencing is the same as mine, then I like your fencing’. He dislikes it when she says she hate her own fencing because it’s like she’s saying she hates his fencing as they have similar fencing styles. As he says he doesn’t care about a lot of things but one of the things he cares about is his swordsmanship.

They skipped passed why he just ran into the road like that. In the novel it said he finally managed to sense magic in the real world and ran towards it but as he was about to make it across the road a truck hit him. That why he was able to see magic as soon as he was reborn.

That's it. General culture. Not an anime reference. It possibly rose to popularity in the '40-'50s based on an Italian dog who continued to try to meet his dead master at the same place.

It's the writers of the English subs who went ahead and changed it to "Fido" as apparently, that's old, and apparently easily recognisable dog name in America... And the translators decided to make it a reference to some old comics from the 80-s or something like that. Someone explained it in another reaction of that episode. Although I can't get it as there are other anime that also have the main character being called "doggie" and they just do that, but now all of a sudden, "no it has to be a reference to something no one's ever heard" And no, it's not about me not being old enough. It's just that for one, I'm not American, and for two, I don't read comics, I read manga... there's a difference imagine it or not... 😅🤣
