The top Kallax ‘wall’ will sag when not supported with a vertical plate, especially with weight on it.
Concerned about this as well. Those pieces are essentially hollow with a bit of cardboard in them. Plus you have a box that isn’t braced and can rack like a parallelogram and collapse.
I've seen enough horror pictures of vinyl collections destroyed because a kallax was used incorrectly. Removing the internal walls will 100% lead to structural failure.
It's a good job you got the tread plate placed first time... It would take a LOT of hot tea to correct it!

On my Kallax unit, the height difference is just about the thickness of a (Lego) window pane ~1.5mm. It's not a roll, but I found matboard (used in picture framing) at an art supply store that is .055" thick- just slightly thinner than then window pane. I also echo the worries of an unsupported Kallax unit. It will be prone to sagging, racking, and possibly breaking if the inside structure is completely removed.

Baseplate is the height of a half tile I believe, but of course something like cardstock I imagine should be about the right thickness as well for the top of the Kallax. Also love the tread plate!

You can use flooring foam underlayment to fill the 1mm gap. But as some others suggested, you should have a vertical support on that cube organizer. It’s not very sturdy without it. Good luck though! I am looking forward to seeing the room progress!

Now your coaster, it needs a coaster to go straight true those loops, just for the fun factor.
Something definitely needs to go through the loop. The issue with top many different heights is the train lines!
If you go with the higher land thing for the access point, that could give that part of the city some nice height variation. I wonder if the coasters have clearance to weave through each other. There might be chip board in the thickness you need, or some thin non coragated cardboard.
I was thinking LEGO boxes could be sufficient for a 1mm spacer, haha!

Great progress!! I would’ve extended the tread plate past the sill edge and bend it down 90°. That leading edge will get a lot of foot traffic and wear the paint off.
I don't have the abilities to do that but this is cool. It's not high traffic and I step over the whole step usually, haha!
You’re right about the Kallax top not being flush, my city is build directly on the top and I had to compensate for the height of a plate. You could compensate with big tabletop plates which would then rest on the side walls: the sagging comment is true, the Kallaxes need the inner supports as they consist of paper honeycombs and mostly thin air.
Yeah I'm going to cut down the inserts and add them back as pillars rather than solid walls. I have a cunning plan!
Be careful modifying those Kallax units. There is no extra material in them and a lot of empty space inside. They can be customized if you know what you're doing (I've done it a few time), but it's also easy to end up with something that is not structurally sound.

You'll definitely want or need at least one more vertical support in that Ikea Kallax furniture if it's ever going to support weight of any kind (for example, a tabletop or a builders' hand who is using it to steady themself while leaning into the city/crouching or getting up). If it only ever is going to support plastic bricks and/or a single tabletop is supported across the entire expanse and supported on those millimeter-higher ends, you MIGHT be okay. There's a possibility that there might be sagging on the top even under its own weight, at least when we're talking about the precise tolerances you seem to wish for. Seems wise to make a plan to avoid that at the outset and bolster it.
I have a new cooking plan for the centre shelf and I'll be adding cut down supports too!

Hi Robin. Great update. Have you considered sanding the edges if the unit down? You could always paint it black again if it showed. Might be easier in the long run than finding the right thickness of shim material.
I considered that but don't have an electric sander. I'll try the low tech option first!
Hi Robin! I don't normally comment any videos, but I'm a big fan of your channel and watch every episode! But as I heard of your plans with the Kallax cupboard, I really wanted to share some advice with you. As I myself had a lot build with these cupboards, I know that they are not structually sound without the Inlays, because there is only paper inside! So I would strongly advise you to bring in some supportive structure or otherwise it will surely bend over time.

well that is nice carpet, 03:42 and don't forget about your heater room easy acces. 04:27 is that not getting wobbling... if your don't have vectical space in it or bending your desk? i know IKEA is handy but strong. it is well worried.

09:33 i shall by that overhang/corner well a LED light strip to give some extra light, even now it feel little bit dark and if you putting your harbor there than it is more dark there to show your ships or other LEGO sets.
An led strip is a good idea. The undersea will be in those sideways units here too. And I'll remember to add supports!
Have you thought about building the new city using the new road plates. You would be able to get a base plate for every 2 roads width.
I think they're a bit narrow and lumpy with those tile spaces, besides I already have a ton of old road plates!
I don’t know if you have the “Command” adhesives where you are but if you do they have Velcro pieces that take up that amount perfectly and will make it so your table tops don’t move :) The room is looking amazing!
Hmmm they might need to move as plans evolve. I think they're too thick but I have some to try!
Always fascinated how everyone uses different shelves and tables to create their cities. I don't have the space for tables so have a vertical city. Sourcing open ended shelves to make the city flow more was hard and no shelves seem to fit together perfectly. Hope you can find a simple solution to the height problem. I wonder if the old sticky backed plastic loved by Blue Peter (showing my age now) would work to fill the gap. Love the tread it's so Brick Nottingham 👍🏻. Its going to take you forever to move and rebuild everything can't wait to see and even bigger fairground.
you should try sanding off the little ribs on the side of the Kallax, would be much simpler in the long term.
For the edges of the new IKEA units, best option for something to put over them would probably be something like wallpaper: thicker than paper, still thin and comes in large quantities.
Not a bad plan. They're are lots of options but I don't want to shell out too much for something so unseen!
I've actually built a table also based on the Kallax cupboard and encountered the same issue. The height difference is indeed about 1 millimeter. I've added a 3mm plate of the main area of the cupboard and a 2mm plate (stripes) on the sides, leveling it out. With a table plate on top (slightly overlapping the edge), you barely notice it

Have you ever thought about having a table made out of you know like 2/4 plywood stuff like that I have noticed they're way better than the tables that you can buy

As someone else has pointed out, I’m concerned that the Kallax unit will sag and possibly break under the pressure and weight of Lego above without support from underneath. I love the idea, but it might need a work around…
But… I love everything else. The room is looking fresh! Especially love the actual tread-plate (was wondering what the other surprise was…). Good luck with moving all the Lego. I’m sure it’ll be easier than another well known Lego TH-camr who has recently done the same as you (all be it on a larger scale..)
I forgot to mention I'll be adding partial cut-down supports to the units so they are supported by thin columns rather than solid walls!

Would actual Lego baseplates work to even out that -- uh -- unevenness at the top of the KALLAX unit? (Good choice, by the way. I have several of those in my study. I'm going to use part of one for a shelf-based Lego city.) Hooray to you!
It's too small a difference for LEGO geometry. A LEGO cardboard box however may be exactly what I need!
Acrylic sheeds Robin Transparent Acrylic Sheets or Black ones. But the bigger Problem would beto prevent Kallax from sag in over time wich is next to impossible without at least one intersection or an massuv Subframe in the rear

you can get neoprene "self leveling" mats for aquariums. They're typically like 5mm thick, but they compress. The idea being that with some weight on top of them, they'll account for any inconsitencies in the surface of of your table. I'll second the other comments, that those ikea tables are going to sag to the center, but i doubt you'd get enough weight on them to break it with just lego. The self leveling mat would help account for any sag in the center as well.
Looking good. Maybe rubber drawer liner would help level up the table top and would help give a little grip to what’s on top so things don’t slide if you knock them etc. I’ve used it under my fish tanks, plus it usually comes in clear or black from B&Q. Don’t envy you the job of moving Brick Nottingham! Tread plate looks really nice too.
The move will be a nightmare but I'll do it in sections I think!
May I suggest a converted office chair cut down and placed on wheels to sit and roll under rather than bend under - take it from us model railway guys - your back will thank you!
I think I'm doing it too low to sit and wheel around underneath, unless you just mean to sit down in the standing holes? That could work!
@@RobinHoodBricks I'm worried about you bending to get under the scenes (we are not getting younger), but if you can fit a roller chair in there, then that would be great as then you can view things closer to sea-level.

Love the tread plate! On the subject of misleading roller-coaster pictures, long ago, when the Corkscrew was the signature ride of Alton Towers they always showed it so you saw that it had two loops, but not that the two loops were along quite a long spiral. This often happens with adverts for places with rides.

It doesn't even need paint but I don't want to reduce its strength even a little. They're fairly cheaply made!

Out of interest - have you seen, or do you intend to buy, the new 60422 Harbour? Just with you speaking about a lowered section for the sea, I was curious if you were intending to invest more space into harbour-related builds. Mine just came yesterday and building it was a joy. It could have been the spiritual successor to the 6542 Launch and Load seaport but they seemed to decide to spend the extra parts budget on a side building instead of a road and truck which, I think, could have added more play value. Nonetheless, I think it's a great set for the money and I intend to modify mine to allow the crane to move and get vehicle access under.
I do have a lot of cranes and ships already BUT I think I'll have to buy it as it looks lovely!

So glad you got the loop coaster - have you considered the mega coaster where you connect with the original you already have??? As for kallax, our whole city is on it / but we put table tops to flatten. For your issue I wonder about cheap bendable chopping board? About the right depth and strong and not too expensive?
Haha I've not seen the mega coaster but I think variety is good so I'll have my three all separate. It'll be like Rollercoaster Tycoon!
under that over hang is a perfect place for a cave build for your rock monsters, you can set up a good mine scene with either rock raiders, power miners, or more modern city mining to fit your main theme of the city, you could glue base plates to the under bit and to the walls so you can build of them to make a really good cave walls and ceiling, under the table should be the trolls/cyclops, sworn enemies, but forced to live together under ground due to humans hunting them...maybe an off shoot branch of the ssp was created to hunt them.
That's a lot of underground scenes. I think the lower front shelves will be enough space for all that!

if the top of the kallax shelf is half a tile lower, why not use normal plates next to baseplates? normal plates are half a tile thicker than baseplates.
But that's a ton of blue plates!
You could look for vinyl tablecloth to fill the 1mm gap. They're big, cheap and you can use multiple layers if needed. They usually come with awful patterns, but if you're covering them up with baseplates anyway that shouldn't be a problem ;)
Edit: looked up the english name, and I think it's called oilcloth? They come in transparant too

Are you going to create a walk away around the city or only standing holes again?
Just standing holes I think to maximise space and I like building against walls to give the impression it goes on and on. Having an open edge all around can make it look like a weird island!

Hey Robin, to try and level the top of the Kallax you can get rolls of non slip mating which might help or you could try using cheap fuzzy felt sheets from a craft or hobby shop. Also may I suggest that when you build the city higher up to the rear so when looking at it from the front the builds will be more visible the further back they go and additional layers to the build and giving a forced perspective

Have you thought of moving over to MILs plates at all or the newer road plates before you move v2.0? Understand us patreons might need to up the contributions if so!
you could think about making an U-shaped layout instead of a square one. that way, people can still see the scenes in the back, and you dont have to crawl all the way to the back.
A roll of thin packing foam might work to level that top nicely? or a non-slip liner for cupboards? not sure how think they are though, but packing foam should come in a range of thicknesses. carpet looks fab, and I love the long undersea and under-under sea shelf ideas. will be brilliant

I was going to measure it and do the maths but I forgot. I reckon about 40x80 studs, so 800 times the normal size!
