I like how Bob Summers does the trumpet hit with the rest of the section while he's soloing. Now that's a player. Buddy Rich used to say you have to know how to be a sideman, how to be a leader and how to be a soloist. Bob doing all three in one blow there. The great Bob Summers!
Possibly the WORST Blair Witch job of videography ever to have been filmed BUT, fantastically awesome to hear what's happening audio wise within the room (despite the cameraman's determination to NOT get any decent shots of the brass, UGH!)
+The Allegro Orchestra Often people shooting coverage will add camera moves that can then be edited in an interesting way in post production. This can be especially important in trying to add a degree of visual interest when covering 18 guys just sitting in chairs. But these moves don't always make much sense when viewing the raw footage like in this clip. The camera crew was there all day shooting, and each guy had to do his best to shoot the focal point of music that they were hearing for the first time.
please come over to the UK!! I need to hear you guys live! Gordon you've done an absolutely phenomenal job with a bunch of awesome musicians, would be great to see them! cheers for the video
Gordon and guys, thank you for the inspiration for many years! It's so tight... sprint concentration... top-level. Cameraman - thank you, it's a great sound!
I wish there wasn't just the right channel of audio, I'm loving the way its sounds here. It's not the studio "perfect" mix but the raw in-room sound as if you were there.
Just mind numbingly astonishing world class talent. And, running my own Studio, when I shared this, I instructed others not to judge the overall mix, as it's so obviously a wonderful 'fly on the wall' insight into what you guys do! (been a massive fan since 'Cut 'n Run') Thank you for uploading btw - Best wishes to all involved! ;-)
Mark Howell It's the chord tonality which implies a dominant function, so as written for Bb Trumpet they have these notes from the top down: Eb (#9) Bb (7th) Ab (b13) E (3rd)
What great playing, I only wish the camera work was up to the same standard, it is embarrassing awful. Mr Camera man. Don't go to the pub before you hold a camera.
A bit late to the party, but my best guess: Mojave large membrane mics for the saxes and a Royer SF24 roommic (to be seen at the very last seconds of this vid).
+Megan Hallie the close finger position is just something that all sax players should practice in front of a mirror with. If y;our fingers leave the pearls, you can't play fast. I learned this from my teacher, Charles McPherson, back in the late 1980's.
Man, I have explained this about 50 times on this thread. It was not meant to be a music video, it was just raw coverage, meant to be cut together at a later time. For me, I am grateful we got it filmed at all. Having said that, the video operator clearly was unable to discern what instrument should be the focal point at any given time. That did kinda suck, but we did have another camera going that day.
Hey Gordon, you guys have filled the void to a new generation that Maynard and Buddy used to occupy. I'm a big fan. You and your band are big heroes today to band kids and other musicians. Have you thought about doing a Maynard Ferguson tribute piece like was done for Clifford, Jaco and others? It could be "I remember Maynard". I mean, you've got the band and the writing chops for it. Just a thought for a future writing assignment.

This is virtuosic playing. The camera work drives me crazy but the band is outstanding

Bob Summers...The Fox Hunt with Maynard Ferguson...
My right ear is tired.
😆🤭
Yeah why does it only play in one ear?
Amazing! The level on concentration in that room.
Wayne is the MAN!
Holy crap the trombone section is phenomenal
I wish I could have seen some it. The camera person apparently was under orders to keep them a secret.
The Whole Band is phenomenal!
Great band ...terrible camera work. This band is on the forefront of what's happin' now !
Real musicians! Don't hear alot like this. AMAZINGLY tight. Makes me think back on the seventies. Keep it up!
oh my god!!!!! no words to describe such a piece, ejecution, musicians! everything....the most high level, unbelieveable!!!

+Gordon Goodwin Is the rest of the footage from that day available anywhere?
Don't excuse shit unless you want to be associated with it, Gordon.
please come over to the UK!! I need to hear you guys live! Gordon you've done an absolutely phenomenal job with a bunch of awesome musicians, would be great to see them! cheers for the video
This trumpet solo was amazing. Although it was so short.
Lay Oy I know on the actual recording there is an alto sax solo instead
I love the quick page turns
Yeah, they can also hold their instruments. Clever ,eh?
2:16 is some of the greatest camera working i have ever seen
incredible Wayne !!
These guys are such a good team. Total appreciation and mutual respect - with fun.

AWESOME! It'd be the coolest thing ever to see y'all live
Jeez, I'm sweating just watching you guys on that one.

;-)
Solid playing on a killer chart!
my right ear absolutely loved this
gotta love that double d at the end
I love when trombones come in
I love these videos!
Solid Band, solid jazz!
WHY ON EARTH WERE YOU FOCUSING ON THE BASS PLAYER FOR SO LONG? WE GET IT, HE'S GOOD
Chris bro he’s my teacher
@@jbrewerbass F I N G E R S
Maybe the guy recording is a bass player lol
Sooo good! On so many levels
Absolutely Great super tight playing!!!
Sounds Great Gordon! Who is the bone section on this date? (couldn't see them on that camera angle)
Andy Martin on lead trombone, for sure!
Just one word: wow.
0:31 SALT PEANUT
Muy buena Big band!! Very good, fantastic band!!! Posibly the cámera Man is a next of kind with bass player!!
Oh my god! It is amazing! Good work Big Phat Band!! It's from another universe or what?:D
That was amazing 😃
Nice! What fun!
Whoah!
Great band... terrible camera work.
2:31 Perfect sounding b13#9 !!! wooo yeah
Wait, Im a trumpet player. what does b13 #9 mean?
Mark Howell It's the chord tonality which implies a dominant function, so as written for Bb Trumpet they have these notes from the top down:
Eb (#9)
Bb (7th)
Ab (b13)
E (3rd)
JB Craipeau What about the rest of the chords? Or is that the only one you could pick out lol
@@lazulicdm i think they just pointed out that one because that was the “highlight” of the trumpet solo if you will
awesome!
I think we can all agree everyone in that room is talented...except the camera man
Excellent ! Apart for the one-sided audio, but eh.
Found a solution, just roll iTunes in sync.
What great playing, I only wish the camera work was up to the same standard, it is embarrassing awful. Mr Camera man. Don't go to the pub before you hold a camera.
Okay, I see Royer mics for the trumpets but what was that being used in the sax section. Also, were there any room mics, like the U87 etc..???
A bit late to the party, but my best guess: Mojave large membrane mics for the saxes and a Royer SF24 roommic (to be seen at the very last seconds of this vid).
Bob Summers on trumpet solo ?
Gordon ... would be cool if you would chart a rippin piece with the Benny Hill Theme Song as the base.
God-like
Do I see Eric Marienthal on sax?
only right ear audio? plz fix!
Hey, the camera guy just passed out!!!
🤯🔥
one day man one day
Band is awesome....Camera work made me sick!
What song was being played in the beginning?
Race To The Bridge
Terribly done video of a great great band. The camera must have been deaf and bad case of palsy.
The thing i notice with the sax players is how close their fingers are to the keys
+Megan Hallie the close finger position is just something that all sax players should practice in front of a mirror with. If y;our fingers leave the pearls, you can't play fast. I learned this from my teacher, Charles McPherson, back in the late 1980's.
+Vernon Braaten Whoa, I'm showing my age. this was back in the late 1970's.
Vernon Braaten Thanks, dude (:
Tiozoes dominam!!!
rien à dire.
What type of tenors are the tenors playing in
I presume "saxophones" is not the answer you're looking for..?
фантастика
um guys Im from 2024
Great stuff but piss poor camera work.
OPPORTUNITY LOST!!! Virtuoso musicians creating great music and nothing but the crappiest videography to document it. Sad! But the music was great!
cant hear the bass
Hermann Otto your dumb it's a glass room with the door shut
Stereo please, or at least mono thru left and right. Couldn't stand more than 30sec.
It should be "Very difficult chart". Not vey difficult chart I'm pretty sure
Nope... It's SO challenging its a "vey" difficult chart
Band is fantastic...the camera work, not so much...
I like to see the band rehearse but the camera work was not very good and made no sense based on the tune.
This sounds so weird with out drums bass and piano
Great music - shame it was filmed by a 5 year old!

@@BigPhatBandOfficial is the footage of that available? i’d love to see how the trombones and trumpets play their solis.
Well, it's not supposed to be a music video. It's just a behind the scenes look, and the sound is captured on the camera mic.
Brilliant playing ! Someday i want to be in a big band just like this :)
