First off, huge thanks to Stickboy24, Hambone001, and Zuit for helping to make this video possible and surviving the onslaught of Mig-23s! There is a lot to like with the F-14 as it is introduced into War Thunder. It is a beautiful model and the attention to detail is fantastic, the big thing that really surprised me right away was the turbine engine sounds and overall sound profile of the aircraft flying. This is by far their best-sounding aircraft in terms of sound design. This is an aircraft that I thought we would never see in the game and was eager to give it a shot. When first hearing the F-14 was coming to War Thunder, my initial untrained thought was it would be terribly unbalanced due to its ability to strike at long range and other factors. The Phoenix Missle in-game sort of worked in my hands (someone who doesn't play a lot of 10.0 Plus Jets) but the game mechanics were a bit lacking in my opinion at times. One of the biggest learning curves was the multiple key bindings required if you do not want to use the Y menu to operate your multiple armaments. Users of the F-4 Phantom and other top-tier jets are used to this issue when using things like the Sparrows and Aim-9s together. We spent hours trying different radar modes, different patterns, and different tactics. We had mild success with it but it was also frustrating a bit at times. The F-14A is not the best aircraft for a classic dogfight and you feel it. It's not awful by any means but you definitely wish you had the re-engined F-14B at times in a foot chase. This is just my Day 1 opinion from about 30 matches and I am sure the devs at Gaijin will continue to develop the Game Mechanics I mentioned. Thanks for watching the video and let us know what you think!
It will be interesting to see how this works. Got to admit I was expecting some knock off version of Danger Zone play whenever some play plays the F14 😂
More like Ham's piloting skills but then...that's always been the case. How many times has Ham blurted out "hey watch this" and flown straight into a building or trees or something? We sure the "enemy nation" doesn't have a plant in the squadron xD?
I think it needs to be pointed out, Bo: Once youve locked the Phoenix missile, you MUST maintain your radar lock if you want it to hit THAT target, otherwise when you drop your lock, it will go semi actie and track the NEAREST plane within its tracking cone, NOT the one you locked. Hence why your missile hit the Mig 23 at 2:50 rather than the Su-22
@@lt.lettuce2023 no, mad dog missile is firing a missile without lock at a tatget within 10 miles for amraams and i think 5 for Phoenix, it will go pitbull off the rail and lock into the first thing it seens in a 10 degree angle
We tried a lot at high Alt with TWS and SRC with on and it still struggled to hit targets. I appreciate the information, I only included those clips because those were the only times the missiles hit anything. Zuit and I spent hours trying to get it to work... and not much dice yesterday. This was my first time flying it and using that weapon system. I plan on revisiting it today on stream and trying to get better with it.
You know how we all love the shenanigans, but let's be real, when Bo pulls a class maneuver and shows you how to do it right (kills afterburner, pops flares for four seconds, then hard G-turns and rolls inside), you realize he's really FUKKING good at this game.
He's not really flying it right, though. Not using the afterburner as much as he should, going all the way down to zero throttle to turn tighter but also bleeding all of his speed, poor situational awareness, etc. However, I'm not going to blame him for it, as his content is not heavily geared towards actual gameplay and more towards humor and shenanigans. If you want a more serious guide/ how-to-fly youtuber for WT, I would recommend Defyn and possibly Beer Thunder.
@@cheesuschrist5017 I broke the habit of afterburning through every turn because the pesky Russian missiles were very good at hitting hits in my experience. Hey bo, I don't know if you know this or not, but launching from a higher altitude (like 30k ft) gives the missile a huge advantage. It's not so much the potential energy that lets the missile stay fast, as it is the thinner air. The missile glides after it's burned all of its fuel, so launching at sea level means it has to fight the atmosphere all of the way. Unlike jet engines, rocket engines have equal thrust at sea level and In vacuum (ignoring nozzle design and optimization). So at much higher altitude, the missile can get a much higher ground speed, and can maintain it for longer. And the opposite applies to dodging missiles, the lower you are, the better, as the missile has to fight the air that your engines and wings are using to your advantage
I recall how proud I was to finally fly a Hurrican Mk.II rather than a Gladiator in the open beta. This game has powercrept so much, it is unrecognizable.
