    This week we got an introduction to the sailboat from the designer/builder's very own son, Ted Hood Jr. We are taking a look at a Ted Hood-designed 1990 Little Harbor 59 for $795,000. Born as a Little Harbor 58, the hull was stretched by a foot to provide for a larger aft deck (fantail). Another amazing modification for this bluewater sailboat that came at the same time as the extension was the alteration to the keel to reduce the draft another 8" to 4'6" which is really hard to find in a bluewater sailboat this size.... not to mention it's going to sail as well as any Ted Hood designed sailboat (which is to say amazingly balanced and great for bluewater).

    Dear student of Edson...The cable clips (clamps) are installed backwards on the quadrant cable. The U bolt should be on the "dead" end of the cable as it crushes the wires it is holding. The old timers taught "Never saddle a dead horse" to remind that the "saddle", (the cast or forged half) of the clamp goes on the "live" end of the wire rope so as not to damage the wires. Jus an FYI... I love this channel and the level of detail you go to. Thank you!

    The Two hydraulic fittings on the bow are for the furling motors for the genoa.

    • @mboyer68
      @mboyer68 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're right. They're definitely part of a hydraulic circuit and located where they are I had guessed that they're for a hydraulic jib furling system, but that guess was dependent on whether or not something like that existed. Genoa furler, nice. I wonder if that boat has a hydraulic bow thruster and they just ran a separate circuit for the furler?

    Just a little more detail on the location, Melville RI was the home of the US Navy Net Depot and the PT Boat Training Center. John F Kennedy spent time at this very location training to become a PT Boat Captain. MTBSTC Melville (Motor Torpedo Boat and Squadrons Training Center) was the primary training location for the entire WW2 period for both enlisted crewmen and officers. I have visited there before and thought it at least deserved to be mentioned.

    Those fittings on the front are for the optional “bowsprit seat”. It is hydraulically actuated with functions that include but not limited to; telescopic extension, port and starboard swing of up to 85°, and a teak framed seat that is able to swivel 360° in either direction. The perfect addition for the consummate bowsprit enthusiast. 😉

    OK guys I'm starting to get price whiplash here. Last week's boat you could have bought for the money from a garage sale and this one I'd have to mortgage the grand kids. Either I slept through it or you didn't talk about the spars, but there was soooo much on that boat to talk about. Keep the good stuff coming guys you make Thursday's one of my favorite days of the week.

    I love Little Harbors with one exception, I would never buy a boat with a drop keel or dagger board and Ted Hood loved them. I know it’s to get into shallow waters but I prefer deep water sailing. Just my preference. I think it is a 90!

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Since we have been doing this series, I have had a number of my notions modified a bit. There is a plus to this shallow draft design. We know of an elder couple who went around the world and the canals of Europe in their Bermuda 40 and NEVER USED THEBOARD ONCE. A lot of sailors going long distances rarely beat to windward.
      I think Teds design will sail to windward just fine with the boars up , not like a 12m , but then that's not necessary but put his foil board, on that rare moment needing an extra boost to claw of a lee shore, then go ahead and set it .. My pb drew 8' and it was fine in New England and Nova Scotia and Bermuda but i would have been limited in the Chesapeake, the keys and the Abacos

First was what I would call a wet boat a Chrysler Mutineer, lots of fun and a great way to learn Sailing. My Second and Favorite was a Catalina C30 tall rig. Great first cruiser…. As of late I have been looking at a Gozzard 36’ Cutter
    There is one in Wisconsin right now and just under $100,000.
    I mainly like to navigate around the Great Lakes and while that’s not Blue Water it can be quite a treacherous.

      @@YachtHunters Well she's called Deerhound, has a full keel and has been on the hard in Waterford for over a decade. Owned until fairly recent times by a Guinness and raced out of Howth Y.C. (Dublin)
      She's a project. Allegedly with about 80%+ of a refit done. She has beautiful lines. However, down below is typical of pre-war designed yachts and she's laid out as more of a racer, than a cruiser. She's perhaps better suited to classic regattas etc. Rather than long passages. That said. No veneers that I could see down below. All solid hard woods and bronze everywhere.

    The Dyna Plate isn't balls suspended in epoxy, they are bronze balls (bb's really) smashed together under high pressure. Using the bb's maximizes surface area of the alloy to the water, massively more total surface area than a plate of the same size would be. If you cast the bb's in epoxy you'd limit the surface area contact to the water. The Dyna plate should never be ground or sanded clean, best way is to soak it in a mild acid to remove the patina.

    11:56 - Those cable clamps are on back to front . The bridge ( saddle ) should always be on the main cable not the tail ( dead ) end ." Never saddle a dead horse " is the old saying in rigging .
    Edit - just saw that it has been mentioned already below .

    I do not like the Formica look of modern boat and this more classic solid wood design is the best I have ever seen.

    Boat for cruising big oceans and live aboard luxury. I’d like a knowledgeable captain to steer this ship and a good nimble deck hand. Then I’d live my best life aboard. Finally seeing all the world and watching sun rise and set over crystalline azure seas.

    This is a stunning example of what a sailboat can be, BUT....... the charm of this channel has always been reviews of old boats that the average person can buy. And it seems that the Capt. is drifting away from this formula as of late.
    I would like to make another request for more trailer sailers. You have had a few. The Catalina 25 comes to mind, but even that boat, while technically trailerable, is not really a trailer sailer.
    A trailer sailer, by my definition is generally 20ft or under, not fixed keel. Something you can launch single handed in a half hour or less. I think the Sunfish is the only boat you've done that I'd put in this category.

    Captain my Captain. This is a ship. All points are well deserved. I'm intimidated though. I would need to hire Sir Captain Q to sail it for me as well as a couple of college kids and Ran Day to film and supervise. Maybe you should add novice/intermediary/professional class to your ratings as well. Side note. Would this not have a better design as a ketch or yawl being the size is massive? Even with a lottery win this is too much boat for me. Question: What length requires a captain's license. I always thought 69 ft and up but maybe I am wrong. It happens. Lovely episode Captain Q . I shall dream of south seas and inviting islands tonight. Thanks guys.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all you wouldn't have to hire me ...just feed me ! Interesting observation about the rig. Hood originally designed many of his boats as Yawls. After designing the in- mast furling system, he felt the mizzen was superfluous. I guess i would like that second stick myself.
      You don't need a captain's license to sail any owner private vessel unless you are going to carry passengers for hire.

    Besides the incorrectly installed wire steering cable clamps (and there should be 3 clamps, not two), Portable Gasoline tanks MUST NEVER be stowed below deck EVER!! I’ve seen 3 boats explode in my time, all three due to gasoline below deck.

    Cap. Heard Lyods of London exited recreational boat re-insurance market/ with repercussions. Two years ago my BoatUS policy (NY/NJ) went fm $400 to $1400 w/o claims. (Got Progressive policy $650) BoatUS Reason given was my 1979 O'Day Center Cocpkit sloop was 40+ years old. Are you hearing the same - what can we do?
