Nice clip. I just love to see these old dairy barns. Takes me back to my younger days !! I appreciate the construction AND the character of these great buildings !! Keep them comng !!
Just discovered your channel. Cool stuff. Im a dairy nutritionist here in Lancaster PA. I second the TMR! I feed Amish herds here that are hand fed. Nothing wrong with it. TMR just makes things more handy. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Mike. I'm glad you discovered the channel and hope you enjoy the videos. I know a guy that breeds cows down in Lancaster. I have a video from last summer called "Tractor Pulls & Semi Truck Pulls" and at the 10:30 mark you see Doug who breeds down in Lancaster.
I do miss it! Not so much the milking, but I do miss the tie stall barn, the sounds and the smell! Make me want to build one to put beef cows in, but that would be kind of foolish I guess!
I was raised on a dairy farm in Clockville NY 20 miles east of Syracuse and seeing this video brought back allot of memories, Although we had to climb into the silo and throw the silage out you still do everything pretty much the same.
James Weismore there are still the old concrete pads where we would throw our silage on to from the old silos out front. We are about an hour south of Syracuse
He was the Chiropractor there for many years, he now is retired and has a country band in your area (Doc Weismore). Myself i Live in Jacksonville, Florida Love your Video's. Wish we had the equipment back in the 50"s that you use today. We had a Team of Horses, John Deere A, and a Farmall A . We worked with Loose Hay (hay loader from the back of the wagon, hook and Trolley in the barn with that team of horses. Anyway Keep up the good vidoe's
Thanks for taking us through the routine Mike. The TMR cart would definitely make it easier in you and you’re basically set up for it already. Nothing like the smell of haylage from a harvestore
First time I've seen a tie stall barn. Everybody had herringbone parlors around here. Kinda neat. Thanks for taking the time to make a video. Morning chores can be hectic. Take care and have fun
Its an average size. There are 52 stalls in it. Then 16 stalls that T off it for dry cows. There are barns around here that hold up to 70 and 80 cows. Those are some big barns
You do it pretty much the same way we do it. Our "new" end used to be a thrash floor, there are 10 tie stalls now (5 on each side). The rest of the barn has 34 stanchions. We use 6 Surge buckets and pails,.... What do you have?? Parlor?? I didn't think I saw a pipeline but I couldn't be sure.
I worked for a farmer who turned the cows out of the stantion barn in all kinds of weather. I would chop the ice in horse trough and watch them drink as they shivered. I never did think that was good for them. I can remember many days of feeding silage and dry hay and corncob meal. Those were hard times, but they were good times. I didn't really have a care in the world.
Nice video i sure dont miss feeding like that. i only milked for a short time in a set up like you have. our "wing" at work has tie stalls and box stalls with a gutter cleaner so sometimes i still milk old school with the bucket milkers. Tmr cart would save you a lot of time i would think. We were milking in a double 4 herring bone at work but since technology has changed so much over the last few years the university folks decided to bring us into the latest and greatest technology. We now have 2 delaval robots online.
mikep7810 i mostly work on the crops side of the operation but i do work the cows to help out. So far the robots are going well lots of different things with them make things easy but they also have theyre minuses. I think the transition was the hard part. As im sure you know cows like a routine and once it changes they can be difficult. Im fairly certain production was down but its come back up since the switch except for this hot humid weather we've been having. I know they looked at both lely and delaval robots but liked the delaval better and i think went with the delaval because we have a good relationship and a dealer close by with delaval. I think the closest lely dealer to us is either in ny or vt.
Ah the joy of morning chores! Taking out the doo-doo was one of my jobs. I sure appreciated that cab on cold or windy days! Scrapin' beddin', feedin' milkin'- then go take care of the young uns. Our cows got silage, grain and hay each milking, with some extra free choice hay in the bunks outside for them to gnaw on during the day. Never had to go chase them around to bring them in- they knew it was dinner time, and were all waiting at the gate for ya! One good thing about all that hard work: I was in great shape back then! Also- you haven't lived until you've trained a calf to drink out of a bucket, lol. Why they insist on headbutting a bucket of milk (from the inside) is beyond me- perhaps they enjoy being wet?? The milk bath wasn't MY favorite thing, though...
You cannot go wrong with a Risser mixer. We have the Jay-lor a 100 TMR mixer it's okay but the Risser will out do it any day. Do you remember what size the mixer was. Have a great morning
mikep7810 the Jay lor mixer is a very nice machine. For mixing feed it does a very nice job it is designed to cut hay to but the Risser will do much better job if you want to add a couple hundred pounds of dry hay.
mikep7810 I forget where you're located but Deere country in Mount Joy Pennsylvania they have a small one they probably let you use it. Or another dealer near you see if they can get one for you to use .I think they would do an excellent job in your barn . They have a nice tight turning radius. Hope you have a great morning
it's funny you talking about your daughter naming a cow Elsa after the frozen movie my daughter did the same thing most of my calves get named from the latest movie my kids are watching :)
I would put down the corn sileage, then we'd let the cows in and tie them up. After he'd feed them pellet grain. Then we'd begin milking. #supercleangiveaway
That Rissler was nice, I think he quoted me a price of $10K (?), and that was the mid-sized model they had on display. Would definitely work well for you, save you some steps
I'm glad you got quoted a price, we were looking at it and now one came over to talk to us. We even went into the tent and couldn't find any info. I was curious what that was going for.
mikep7810 we just happened to catch the guy after he was talking to someone else. I tried getting information and prices on the original tumble chain mixers they made, and it was like they had no idea what I was talking about. I don't know, seemed nice, but very disorganized
Good operation u got there :)! Do any Xmas shopping 🛍? Did u collect 1/16 th replicas as a kid I had tons and tons even a toy farm outside etc gre crops it was crazzy lol
Enjoyed the video very much Mike feeding and taken care of the cows
Thanks Paul. Always good to mix in a "in the barn" video
This was great . Made me think of my kids. Father on brother.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it

Smoke Eater Thank you. It says a lot that they are so old and still standing
Nice Video! It's always interesting seeing how other dairy operations operate. Keep up the good work! 👍
Thank you. I agree, I like seeing how other farms work too

Great Video Mike! thanks for the trip down memory lane
LVF Northern Wisconsin Farming Lol no problem. Do you miss it at all?
I do miss it! Not so much the milking, but I do miss the tie stall barn, the sounds and the smell! Make me want to build one to put beef cows in, but that would be kind of foolish I guess!
LVF Northern Wisconsin Farming You can put a couple in and do a micro dairy.
No.
We had a dairy farm in Rock Stream. A dump station for milking. Your video brings back alot of memories.
Glad you enjoy the video and the trip down memory lane
Reminds me of when I was a kid and we would go to my cousin's up in Michigan. They had about 65 to 70 cows they milked everyday, twice a day.
My uncle has a tie stall dairy too. I haven't been around too many free stall barns
Hi mike, love watching your videos,I’ve got a small beef farm in sw Virginia but am originally from ne Pennsylvania
Hello Jerry. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Where abouts in NE Pennsylvania?

Very interesting, never seen water system like that before.
There are positives and negatives to it
@@mikep7810 I believe that, I know how cows play with standard water cups and love to make a mess! Lol
Old fashion way!! I like it! Keep up the great work you do for American! I hope the price of milk goes up for you dairy guys!

Thanks for taking us through the routine Mike. The TMR cart would definitely make it easier in you and you’re basically set up for it already. Nothing like the smell of haylage from a harvestore
Andy Lieffring yeah the set up is ideal. Just gotta get the cart
Love the video Mike and the old barn .

Love the video ,Mike! Youre right i think on the TMR or a mixer cart of sorts....love it
Country Born85 Thank you!
Love your videos. I especially like old barns
North east Ohio farmer Thanks man, I'm glad you like it
Used have water cups for the cows. 2 cows per cup. Just push down on the cup and water came out. Simple efficient
We re did our barn and went back to the water buckets
That looks like one hell of a big barn.

That’s a nice setup. That will make some fine Hay. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Gerrald Farms thank you 👍
I remember you spread the manure if the fields are dry enough and the snow isn't to deep
Yeah, if we can't get into the fields we have the manure storage
You do it pretty much the same way we do it. Our "new" end used to be a thrash floor, there are 10 tie stalls now (5 on each side). The rest of the barn has 34 stanchions. We use 6 Surge buckets and pails,.... What do you have?? Parlor?? I didn't think I saw a pipeline but I couldn't be sure.
We have 4 Surge units. There is a pipeline there.

nice job keeping the spiderwebs to a minimum and whitewash looks fairly recent do you still spray on a lime solution ?
matthew johnson Thank you

Great video
Winrow Farms Thank you
yes get a tmr cart like the Jaylor A50 or (if you have enough room) a jaylor a100!
Gotta take some measurements and see what will fit
Great video!! How many cows do you run? What does your milking parlor look like?
50 cows in a tie stall. They get milked right in the stall
You cannot go wrong with a Risser mixer. We have the Jay-lor a 100 TMR mixer it's okay but the Risser will out do it any day. Do you remember what size the mixer was. Have a great morning
The Farming Life I think it was the v950, it was one of the ventricle twin mixers, really nice looking unit.

Great video Mike. Ever wonder how old that barn is? You mentioned something about horses. Good luck with trying to get a mixer in. Have a great day
Rick Perry thank you! I'm not sure exactly how old it is. I'm sure it's up there in age
Bet it’s older than you and I added up lol
lol I think that's a safe bet

New York near Cortland
it's funny you talking about your daughter naming a cow Elsa after the frozen movie my daughter did the same thing most of my calves get named from the latest movie my kids are watching :)
Lol that's awesome. We've had Elsa, Anna, Belle, Beauty and I'm sure others that I'm forgetting.
Mike where are you in NY? How many cows do milk in the tie stalls?
We are a little south of cortland. we milk 50 cows
Great video who does the milking how many cows have you
James O Brien thank you, my dad does the milking. If he doesn't then my brother does
I would put down the corn sileage, then we'd let the cows in and tie them up. After he'd feed them pellet grain. Then we'd begin milking. #supercleangiveaway
Thank you for sharing Todd, you are entered in the contest
Nice video. Nice to see someone who still uses an older system. I always say if it ain't broke don't fix it

mikep7810 yes, by his daughter and I think she showed that cow

Mike it would be better to have a mixer and not to have put silage and corn out when you mix it one time.
I think it would be better to make a TMR mix and put that down
Go with a stainless steel water trough line
Thanks Chris
A power cart will save you so much time
Yes it would
How many cows do you MILK?
50
We also use tie stalls.
