I just ordered a small "Plank" of some 3/16ths kiln-dried balsa to load w/ 4 micron "Stroppy Stuff" diamond emulsion to use with my TSPROF guided-rod sharpening system. I understand the basswood being a tad denser, makes for a very fine strop substrate. Looks like your having a good time there in your shop! Cheers, friend...
You shouldn't sand it... you risk leaving sanding grit embedded in the strop. Heat it with a hair dryer and load the polishing compound the first time. It takes a while but after the first time it will take compound easily.
BobbyG that’s what compressed air and tack cloth are for. I used hi grade epoxy coating on all varieties of wood and it will show imperfections on a micro level and I’ve found that properly cleaning the wood removes not only loose particles but also particles that will potentially loosen up.
This is something I'm doing. Do you just keep adding CrO to keep it similarly coloured or do you let it fade, re-lap and reapply or something else? Also does a carrier (eg oil) swell the wood non uniformly or cause it to 'age' differently (either by preserving it or breaking it down earlier)?
Is there any specific balsa I need to get? They sell balsa strop at 8.95 dollars for a really good and soft balsa. I. Guess that there is different degrees for the balsa. Where can I find the very soft on the USA? I. Live I'm Brasil, I. Would buy I Line and produce it myself
You the man :) I never knew bout balsa or felt strops before and I love them. I'm bad with hanging strops and these give be great control. I will make them next time but I got them cheap 20$ from classic edge shaving store. Canadian online site. Keep up the Great videos buddy. Or Jason Segal look alike lol
If you have Basswood you don't even need the Balsa it works exactly the same and holds up better. The balsa wood is so soft it will be full of dents in no time! If you just insist on using balsa don't waste a piece of basswood for your base, basswood is more expensive than balsa and that would defeat the purpose of calling this a poor mans strop and waste a nice piece of basswood.
People that take time out of their day to make a video for others to get info. no matter how bad it is helps others. Yet there is always that clown from the peanut gallery that will make a sly remark. Quite a lot to say for someone that hasn't made one video.
