Thank you for posting this video. I had no idea she had put this poem to music - one of my personal favorite poems, performed by a musician who has moved like no other.
Thinking of Joni and her current illness. I wish her a full return to health and vigour. Current political events mirror the words of WB Yeats poem "The Second Coming". "The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity."
So much of the popular music on the radio these days is junk. But when you hear a singer/songwriter like Joni, her music resides in its own separate category. It puts to shame most of the music on the airwaves today.
on st patricks day in 1992 i stumbled upon none other than yeats' only son. the old sod even pulled out a 20 punt note from the republic with his dad's portrait upon it. when i mentioned joni's interpretation of the second coming he became violent. i guess this poked a very large balloon filled with lots of hot air. joni honors yeats. was the original poem genius? yes. and did this artist interpret the poem with respect? yes. more than just some shallow treatment here.
IMHO, would think Yeats would be honored to have his work set to music from such a one as Joni. A more beautiful, moving, and honest treatment would be difficult to find.
So Yeats 71 year old retired politician son was upset that people admire his fathers poem? Or was he upset that she made a song of it? If he was in the U.S. maybe he didn't like how Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Maybe he was disappointed that he didn't see much in the way of royalties from her song because it wasn't a big hit.
_The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity._ Yeats passed before the scourge of Nazism had crested in Europe. Imagine his take on that disaster and its robust resurgence in the 21st century.
@wilhemet- I strongly suspect that you are German. There's nothing wrong with this per se but shouldn't it be "wilhelmet" if you aren't familiar with English vernacular you will not understand this "joke". Maakt Nix.
Yeats' actual line is "...the worst / Are full of passionate intensity." She changes it to "passion without mercy." She rewrites Yeats. But, no one will ever accuse of Joni of lacking a major ego.
We were so close to losing her. Can't imagine life without her.
Joni...im consistently blown away...the force is strong in that one
One of my favourite WB Yeat's poems. I love the way Joni has interpreted the poem and don't think it detracts from the original in any way.
a true genius unique, creative spirit and influenced so many of we artists!!

This is the same band and Parker guitar from the 'Woman Of Heart And Mind' 2005 DVD
Because....."The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity."
while the rest are full of passion 'without mercy'
Sólo se puede sentir amor puro. Eso genera Joni Mitchell
One of mine too!

Excuse me? Why do you comment if all you have is hate?
Joni has the Hendrix thumb!
Look how her piano-hands frets that low "E" string!!
Joni suffered Polio as a child. Her "style" is a result of the residual weakness.
WE ARE IN A WAR WITH REALITY ... IT HURTS ... WHO WILL FIGHT
She does work that "Neil Young" look.

Astonishing.

she has the equivalent in Canada

@Wilhemet Huh?
I see what you did there...

Yeats set to smooth jazz ... my eardrums fell upon their own sticks ... while I sharpened q-tips...

well, at least her ego is justified ...
