As a suggestion, I've created a trainer model on my radios with default settings. In a lot of cases it can be used for Buddy boxing as well as simulators.
I just did this with a pair of qx7s. I used the same trainer cord i used with spectrum radio. It doesnt show a icon on the qx7s but works fine.To get the dual rate and expo from master to slave to match i had to increase multiplier to 3.5 . Remove the prop or brace the plane when doing this. Thanks for this post, I am going to build a quad for my wife and this will come in very handy when she gets to piloting her quad, ps she will be assisting with the build as well:)
Great video. Thanks for posting. That said, what happens when I have two Radiomaster TX16s set up the exact same way, meaning: Dual rates, flight modes, expo, bail out and what not... Does this mean that all the switches (mixes for example) work for the student as well!? I would love for the student radio to have the exact same features as the trainer radio. Thanks.
Hi Joshua !! Instead of using the wire between the radios you can recycle a good old D4R2 receiver in the master radio to link them. I know that you had latency to the student radio but I really hate having wire between the ratios.
@@JoshuaBardwell - 1 You bind the slave radio to the D4R2 old school D8 Mode. - 2 Use the ppm pin in the jr module bay to connect the D4R2... 5v and gnd ^^ - 3 use mode master/ CPPM Module in the Master radios... And Voilà ^^ the all your videos is perfectly fine to finish the configurations.
@Go Blynn yes, that's the only issue of this mode, but we preaty much all have old quad's in D16... no ?? And for buddy fly a beginner... on need of crossfire ^^
Last year, I gave my 13 year old nephew a basic but complete FPV setup. Box goggles, a bind-n-fly 5" quad, a stack of my old 4S packs, a Taranis, a charger, and a backpack. They flew into town on Christmas Eve, so we gave him his present and sat him right down in front of the sim so we could go flying the next day. I had already set up trainer mode on our radios. I was relieved that I didn't have to take control. He did well enough in 30 minutes in the simulator. I didn't have to stop him from ramming into any cars in the parking lot! My biggest disappointment with trainer mode is that it feels backwards. If I'm the instructor, you're going to be flying my quad. That's not we want. The new pilot wants to fly their quad with their radio. They want to use their X-Lite to fly their FrSky quad. I don't want to have to save the day with their X-Lite, and they don't want to use my X9D+ as the student controller. Good luck with your son! The week our nephew spent here went very well as far as quads go. I was expecting a quad in a tree, or in traffic somewhere, or smashed into something expensive! :)
Just haul a laptop out to the field. Just spend 10 or 20 minutes futzing around copying a model. I don't know about you, but if I'm ever going to do this with anyone again, it needs to be a more efficient process.
Hey Josh, did you get him a good “toy grade” quad to learn to fly LOS? That”s what I did and it worked out great. An Eachine E011 is a fun starter quad. Then I bumped them up to a Latrax Alias which helped them with Acro LOS. Both of those quads don’t break easily so crashing is not a big issue. After that it the door to FPV is wide open. Plus they have the benefit of knowing how to fly LOS which can be invaluable. Good luck and remember, he just wants to have fun.
Personally I would do the santa version because you can still flash its board to be acro. Joshua probably has uber amounts of little quads that would be top shelve for the little tyke when that time comes.
Aarons14bugs - Good idea and the Santa can easily hold the AIO camera. I did that on mine but Santa’s a little heavy so a motor upgrade is really helpful. One thing though is that I heard that some versions of that Quad’s FC are no longer flash-able.
@@frankbarajas Yeah I heard the only one that can still be flashed is the santa version. I am all about the Mobula7 now though and don't see myself ever turning back to brushed. I want another one but am going to wait till something really special comes out maybe later this year. I'd like to explore something less than 90mm that can support some HD recording!
👍👍👍👍👍Great Tutorial!! Question 1: Are expo (for airplanes) automatically transfered to the student radio or the needed to be set up in the student radio , example same number as the teacher radio? Thanks Alex
I believe expo for the student should be set up on the students Transmitter under the model you just created. If you want it to have the same feel as master radio then you can just copy expo numbers and create them on the student Transmitter
Question, can a student controller be setup to ONLY control throttle? Let them learn to hover while the instructor keeps the quad stationary. I have watched your video twice and it looks like the answer is yes. But I would like your confirmation, great master, before I buy another controller and try this. I learned to fly fixed wing with a buddy box, but I still managed to crash the plane. I believe the reason a buddy box is not used with quadcopters is because the instructor will not be able to react quick enough to divert a crash. However, a buddy box setup would be useful to teach one of the first fundamental skills, hovering.
P. S. - I have a Spectrum wireless buddy box setup but could not figure out how to let the student only control one channel. Hopefully, OpenTX can do this.
Yes, OpenTX can definitely do that. When you create the Special Function to activate trainer mode, there is an optional parameter that allows it to apply to only one channel. If you do not activate the parameter, it applies to all four channels.
I was actually just helping proofread a chapter for a textbook about automation in agriculture. Funnily enough, it was comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different wireless communication protocols between nodes and I thought, "Oh man, this is right up JB's alley". Anyway, the terminology for Master/Slave is kind of in flux now (and we wanted to avoid it since, ya know, agriculture). Several big companies are using Primary/Replica or Master/Replica. Primary/Secondary is a little too ambiguous since it's used in lots of other electronic documentation.
In my opinion text books should use the most common term used, definitely when the term is actually descriptive of the situation and not some arbitrary convention. After all the goal is to teach something in an efficient manner as possible. In this case ppl will spend a few hours googling before they learn that they have been using the wrong term when thy want to trouble shoot or look up something specific.
Great timing! I have the xlite and nirvana and apparently both claim to be able, both neither deliver. Do you know any tricks to get it working on either radio??
Great instruction JB, especially as my X-Lite arrived today which i intend to buddy up to my X7S. However... it looks like the X-lite can't buddy at the moment, no bluetooth module and only an audio Jack socket. Is that right or am i missing something? I hope the latter of course!
Mr. Bardwell, I have got a question! Is it possible, to Mix different Brands of remote Radios, as Long they have the OpenTx Software on it? As an example, one Radio is a taranis 9 plus and the other Radio is a Walkera devo 10 or a Radio Link at9 or at10? Best regards
HI JOSHUA . . . EDDIE HERE IN THE UK. I'VE JUST WATCHED YOUR EXCELLENT VIDEO ON SETTING UP BUDDY BOX SYSTEM ON TARANIS RADIOS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO SET FLAPS USE FOR STUDENT PLEASE. CAN YOU HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE JOSHUA ? BEST REGARDS - EDDIE.
Mr Bardwell. I, like many, enjoy watching your content. However I would like to see some Butterflight content as well, rather than everything being Betaflight based. I understand that principally they are very similar but there's not a huge amount of content on YT for Butterflight. It would be nice to see you expand your video base a little further to include this. ( I realise this means more work ) Keep up the good work BTW
The reason why some audio jacks don't work is because some are mono and some are stereo. The jacks that are mono only have 1 ring on the connector tip while stereo has 2 rings on the connector tip.
a friend and I tried to buddy box a wing and were successful in all but the elevon mixing. Anyone have any tips on this? Thanks for all the stuff learned Joshua
I was looking for trainer videos because I want to buy the Xlite to teach my son to fly, great timing. However, if I am not wrong, I think the Xlite doesn’t have a trainer port, can you confirm? There are other options like plugging a receiver in the module bay. You should do a follow up video covering those options (Bluetooth, subs, etc).
Hi Joshua! I have 2 Horus X10S Express with Edge TX each but it's impossible to connect between them using bluetooth, any clues of what is going on? I have activated bluetooth, 1 radio is in master/bluetooth and the other in slave/bluetooth but when I hit on "Discover" in the master nothing happens :( :(
about one year ago you made a video about the matek f405 and the fchub vtx but in the description are two diffrent flycontroler the matek f405 osd and the f405 std wich one is the right
Thanks for the video. Question: if a student has a Taranis and a model, all set to work together, and trainer has a whatever different radio. Is there a way to setup mixing somehow that way? So student has radio link but stays student.
@@JoshuaBardwell Shame really. I feel there might be a way to do that when both TXs are opentx, by setting up a trainer switch on a separate channel and linking it somehow on students radio but it might be not easy...
Someone needs some Starbucks sensitivity training lol. An inanimate object enslaving another inanimate object is wrong. Pencils misspell, silverware makes people fat, and guns kill. Government should take care of you, no need to apply yourself. Oh I forgot that racism and sexism are bad unless your targeting white males. Happy days
Hi @joshua bardwell I followed the video and set it up as per your instructions. However in my case I am trying to setup a Wing to teach my Grandson how to fly. Also in my case I have 2 XD9's however one of them (Instructor) has a Crossfire module on it since Im running Crossfire on the wing. In my case the channels during the slave cable connection from the Student to Instructor seems to be working however not 100%. The surfaces on the Wing only partially respond to input. I would say maybe 20% compared to a Non Slave scenario. Am I fighting a loosing battle since I have Xfire on the Instructors radio? Im not even sure if its a Crossfire problem or not. The trainer (student) radio assumes a PPM signal however the Xfire is not PPM. Have any magical solutions? :)
By soldering a PPM receiver on your cable (ground&signal) and powering it with a Lipo or your Taranis, you could build a wireless Buddy box. Or you connect a Receiver (SBus) to the pins in the Module Bay (Ground/Power/SBus) and select SBus as Source somewhere in the Trainer menu...I don't know exactly but I googled and tried it some months ago an it worked. Oh and...don't try it, google the pinout first and check the voltage output, don't fry a 5V or 3.3V DSMX Receiver 😵 found it again: www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Taranis-X9D-Wireless-Trainer-Using-SBUS-Rec/
LOL! After doing all the research ourselves to set up a wireless system for our TX16S, Flysky and Spektrum Transmitters we get it all working - THEN find this comment. Talk about re-inventing the wheel. :D But at least it always works. And no sketchy audio plugs/jacks and wires to trip over. ;-)
Most quads dont have the bind button accessible so what if... The quad belongs to the student, it is already bound to the student's radio. In this scenario the students requests the help of someone with more experience. is there a way the student's radio is the master and the instructor's radio is the slave ? This would avoid to have to bind to the instructor for the training, then bind again to the student (owner).
Josh I have a question, the x-lite does non have a trainer jack. It has only a headset jack , sd slot and smart port 3 wire for the receiver programming so buddy box not a possible.
Will this effect your use of the momentary switch for multi stage arming? I feel like it shouldn't since the logical switch is already in the arm state so there would be no change in the arming
You can pretty much remap the channels any way you want but this exact method only works for the four main channels. To do a buddy box channel on an aux channel you can use the "Tr." inputs as a source to a mixer line. But you will need to manually set up the switch that changes control over from the instructor to the student of that makes sense.
@@JoshuaBardwell Yes I have done that before, setting up a switch that controls master/slave control. Ok good to know I can use the 'Tr' as input. Will try today.
I guess as you can't use the trainer mode on the master radio you can select e.g. channel 11 with as a source e.g. TR5. But how to output TR5 on the slave radio? And on what channel should you output it? Guess you cannot just assign e.g. channel 11 with source TR e.g. 5 on the slave radio as well. Or maybe more options pop up once you plug in the slave radio to select as source.
I am trying to connect a frsky x9liteS with a radio master zoro. So far cable works only in one direction. I know Zorro uses TRRS jack and X9lite uses TRS. Someone knows the pinout of these 3.5mm jacks ?
How about bluetooth trainer video? Maybe just the bluetooth functions in general? I have a qx7s and there's a couple options, one being a slave/master and the other some sort of telemetry function.
Is there any way to setup a teacher on an unbound model? It seems the way this is designed means the trainer radio has to bind to the students model to be master with the control switch…Or, the trainer flies the students radio and vice versa
I don't think that's right. The trainer model is bound to the teacher. The student's inputs are only passed through to the model if the teacher's radio allows it.
The scenario I'm thinking of: A youngster comes to the field with his radio and model and asks for help. I would set it up with his radio as master because its bound to the model. The student would use my radio as the slave. Is there a way to have the student on their own radio that's bound to the model?
Yooo Mr J dude! Thanx again 4 what u do.. Out of curiosity how old is your son? I am asking because i just got my 4yr old daughter a generic quad (eachine E010).. no fpv just yet... she's got great throttle control.. just pitch and roll to go :D
Wasn't clear on why you were holding the top right trainer mode toggle switch? It looked as though you had to keep hold of it instead of toggling it/hitting it once?
Joshua Bardwell Thanks for the reply! Turns out it was my cable, the same cable that worked perfectly between the X9D plus and the QX7 for years. If I pull the cable out of the T16 port a smidge, all is well. Looks like I need to shop for a new cable.
Brian Lynn Thanks for the tip! I’ll try that. I’ve tried three different cables and they will work in the T16 if it sits perfectly in the jack. When it works, it works great. Maybe a spacer will make it work consistently.
I set this up for my son a while ago and I’m only able to arm the quad BEFORE I connect the trainer cord to the instructor unit. This could be because I use SH for sticky arming or because the student Tx is a DX6i. Just a heads up for anyone that can’t arm with the wire connected.
Yes that's correct. When you pull the momentary switch to arm, it passes control to the student, and if his throttle is raised, the quad will refuse to arm. I solve this by telling the student to put his throttle down.
Trigger warning! You had me until the "PC" thing! Come on man you help a ton of people and you should not have to worry about being offensive by commonly used term. Don't soft mount your speech! Sometimes vibrations are GOOD! LOL!
I am not worried about offending you. I personally don't feel comfortable using loaded speech like that when there are perfectly adequate alternatives that do not convey such meaning.
Pretty funny coming from a guy who calls himself the know-it-all putting yourself on a pedestal a little bit kind of like you know the master of us all lol. I'm busting chops good stuff man keep it up
@@JoshuaBardwell master/slave is not "loaded speech" and has never been! Its a purely technical term, used everywhere in the world. We are talking about machines after all, not about humans, the context is very clear! Maybe once in the future when Asimov's vision from novels like "The Positronic Man" (Film: "Bicentennial Man") become reality then we might again think about whether it is still appropriate to call a machine a "slave" but not today and also not in the foreseeable future!
Good guide. Very little info on this on the net. X-Lite has no trainer port. Only way to get X-Lite to work for training is to use a wireless buddy box system (often with an RX in the module bay - like Linker from Aloft hobbies - alofthobbies.com/linker.html ). You can get a Module mount kit for the X-Lite from Bangood ( www.banggood.com/JR-Module-Adapter-For-FrSky-X-LITE-TBS-Crossfire-iRangeX-IRX4-Multiprotocol-JR-Type-TX-p-1376003.html )
I think around 5 to 7 years old is the minimum, although there will always be exceptions. Two things you have to consider are the physical coordination to control the sticks and the mental maturity to fly the quad safely. Each kid is going to be different in this respect.
It's unfortunate that the x-lite doesn't have a trainer port, but I guess when small size is a requirement it means some things get sacrificed. Oh well, I guess I won't be using it for buddy boxing :(
The X-lite has a module Bay so it could work like on the X9D... www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Taranis-X9D-Wireless-Trainer-Using-SBUS-Rec/ ...the pinout of the X-Lite might be different.
@@Jongiblets I think the mod affects the SPort Pin and not the SBus Pin. SBus communication (controlling the model) works with or without the mod - programming the module/telemetry (SPort) needs the mod to work.

Thanks for this post, I am going to build a quad for my wife and this will come in very handy when she gets to piloting her quad, ps she will be assisting with the build as well:)
Very helpful. Thank you. Greetings from Russia!
Spektrum has had wireless buddy box system for years now, no cables needed :)
Thankyou Josh, this is gonna be helpful in the future!🖒
Great guid josh. When I get one of these, I know know how to buddy box. Thank you
Joshua will you adopt me and teach me how to fly ? Geez, what a lucky kid.
Thanks Joshua. I was curious about how that worked.
Lmao, what you said about your kid is exactly where I am with my kid and why I'm watching this video!
This is very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks.
Yes! Never let me down.. Joshua
Hi Joshua !! Instead of using the wire between the radios you can recycle a good old D4R2 receiver in the master radio to link them. I know that you had latency to the student radio but I really hate having wire between the ratios.
That's pretty clever. Since the D4R2 outputs PPM you can feed it straight into the trainer port right?
@@JoshuaBardwell No, I use the JR module bay to connect the D4R2 inside the radio, I have the idea when I saw these: alofthobbies.com/linker.html
@@JoshuaBardwell
- 1 You bind the slave radio to the D4R2 old school D8 Mode.
- 2 Use the ppm pin in the jr module bay to connect the D4R2... 5v and gnd ^^
- 3 use mode master/ CPPM Module in the Master radios...
And Voilà ^^ the all your videos is perfectly fine to finish the configurations.
@@brianlynn6154 I now have one installed directly inside the radio with an additional switch to power it on ^^
@Go Blynn yes, that's the only issue of this mode, but we preaty much all have old quad's in D16... no ?? And for buddy fly a beginner... on need of crossfire ^^
Great tutorial Joshua!!
Just copy the model from the student to your radio with companion and then you can use your radio as the master.
@@Aarons14bugs - Me too! Mobula for the win!
👍👍👍👍👍Great Tutorial!!
Question 1: Are expo (for airplanes) automatically transfered to the student radio or the needed to be set up in the student radio , example same number as the teacher radio?
Thanks
Alex
I believe expo for the student should be set up on the students Transmitter under the model you just created. If you want it to have the same feel as master radio then you can just copy expo numbers and create them on the student Transmitter
@@Moonsauc3 thanks!!
Woot! Ask and you shall receive. Thanks "buddy"!
primary-secondary works well too :)
Great instruction JB, especially as my X-Lite arrived today which i intend to buddy up to my X7S. However... it looks like the X-lite can't buddy at the moment, no bluetooth module and only an audio Jack socket. Is that right or am i missing something? I hope the latter of course!
You are correct. X-Lite can't buddy box.
Great explanation, Joshua!👍 Happy new year btw as well 🍾 Has someone ever tried to use buddy func. between a Taranis and a DX9?
STephanM did you ever try this?
Is there a possibilityty to connect openTX radio and Deviatoion Radio?
Mr. Bardwell, I have got a question!
Is it possible, to Mix different Brands of remote Radios, as Long they have the OpenTx Software on it? As an example, one Radio is a taranis 9 plus and the other Radio is a Walkera devo 10 or a Radio Link at9 or at10?
Best regards
hi joshua
i have a x9d plus se 2019 and i am trying to get a x8r to bind , could you do a video on how to do this

HI JOSHUA . .
Here's a 1 hour 40 minute livestream that I did with the Helio guys PID tuning a quad on butterflight.

X-lite does not have a trainer port, you are correct.
Hi Joshua! I have 2 Horus X10S Express with Edge TX each but it's impossible to connect between them using bluetooth, any clues of what is going on? I have activated bluetooth, 1 radio is in master/bluetooth and the other in slave/bluetooth but when I hit on "Discover" in the master nothing happens :( :(
about one year ago you made a video about the matek f405 and the fchub vtx but in the description are two diffrent flycontroler the matek f405 osd and the f405 std wich one is the right
The F405 OSD is end of life. The STD is probably the one you want.

Thanks for the video. Question: if a student has a Taranis and a model, all set to work together, and trainer has a whatever different radio. Is there a way to setup mixing somehow that way? So student has radio link but stays student.
Unfortunately no. That would make a lot of sense but that's not how buddy box works. The instructor's radio always has the bind.
@@JoshuaBardwell Shame really. I feel there might be a way to do that when both TXs are opentx, by setting up a trainer switch on a separate channel and linking it somehow on students radio but it might be not easy...
PC police have infiltrated our hobby ? That's never good...
Great tutorial on the subject from the master himself. Thanks Joshua.
Hahahaha not very sensitive dude!
Oh and...don't try it, google the pinout first and check the voltage output, don't fry a 5V or 3.3V DSMX Receiver 😵
found it again:

LOL! After doing all the research ourselves to set up a wireless system for our TX16S, Flysky and Spektrum Transmitters we get it all working - THEN find this comment. Talk about re-inventing the wheel. :D
But at least it always works. And no sketchy audio plugs/jacks and wires to trip over. ;-)
Can you do this with all brands of radio with Open Tx. e.g Nirvana to Qx7?
I would expect so.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks JB your tutorials are always great and easy to follow. Especially for us new guys. :)
Joshua! You were using this momentary switch for safe arming. Have You changed this setting?
No it's still used for arming. You can do both.
You could set that up manually using the Trainer inputs in yhe Mixer screen. It would require every student's. Radio to be set up that way.
Josh I have a question, the x-lite does non have a trainer jack. It has only a headset jack , sd slot and smart port 3 wire for the receiver programming so buddy box not a possible.
Yes I htink you are correct.
Will this effect your use of the momentary switch for multi stage arming? I feel like it shouldn't since the logical switch is already in the arm state so there would be no change in the arming
I have to have the student zero their throttle or the quad will refuse to arm when I pull the switch.
Just a quick question: can I map the throttle of the buddy radio to an aux channel of the pilot radio in open tx? Or only TAER channels?
You can pretty much remap the channels any way you want but this exact method only works for the four main channels. To do a buddy box channel on an aux channel you can use the "Tr." inputs as a source to a mixer line. But you will need to manually set up the switch that changes control over from the instructor to the student of that makes sense.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ok, thx for that lead. Guess I will need some digging in the open tx manual :).
@@JoshuaBardwell We figured it out. Tr indeed and then trainer function always ON and some trainer setting to 'sticks.'
ciao Is it possible to connect via buddybox trainer or wt01 tx mode 1 with tx mode 2?
I am trying to connect a frsky x9liteS with a radio master zoro. So far cable works only in one direction. I know Zorro uses TRRS jack and X9lite uses TRS. Someone knows the pinout of these 3.5mm jacks ?
how about a link to purchase a mono cable that is known to work...
Aha! Something that works great and easily on Spektrum......and wireless:-)
Like that? www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Taranis-X9D-Wireless-Trainer-Using-SBUS-Rec/
thank you for bring up spektrum. I have instructed few people on my T-Rex 550
How about bluetooth trainer video? Maybe just the bluetooth functions in general? I have a qx7s and there's a couple options, one being a slave/master and the other some sort of telemetry function.
great vid josh ,I am on mode 4 and my friend on mode 2 can we do this on the 2 different modes
Yes it should be possible you just have to re-order the channels to make sure they come through correctly.
@@JoshuaBardwell wow cheers josh ultra quick reply thanks again bud
He's seven.
That's pretty interesting!
Wasn't clear on why you were holding the top right trainer mode toggle switch? It looked as though you had to keep hold of it instead of toggling it/hitting it once?
Correct.
I would love to know how to connect the Jumper T16 Pro-(Master) to the Taranis X9D plus-(Slave). Is it even possible?
It works exactly the same. Jumper has a buddy box port.
Do you can use different taranis TX models?
Yes.
Thanks, mega excellent job!😉
Good job,how i can do trainer mod with x-lite?i cant find nothing
I set this up for my son a while ago and I’m only able to arm the quad BEFORE I connect the trainer cord to the instructor unit. This could be because I use SH for sticky arming or because the student Tx is a DX6i. Just a heads up for anyone that can’t arm with the wire connected.
Yes that's correct. When you pull the momentary switch to arm, it passes control to the student, and if his throttle is raised, the quad will refuse to arm. I solve this by telling the student to put his throttle down.
You need to make sure the cable you use is a stereo cable and bot mono cable!🤔
Very interesting
Trigger warning! You had me until the "PC" thing! Come on man you help a ton of people and you should not have to worry about being offensive by commonly used term. Don't soft mount your speech! Sometimes vibrations are GOOD! LOL!

Trying to get my kids into the hobby is a challenge. How old is your boy? What age is too young?
I think around 5 to 7 years old is the minimum, although there will always be exceptions. Two things you have to consider are the physical coordination to control the sticks and the mental maturity to fly the quad safely. Each kid is going to be different in this respect.
