A lifetime of debt AND then a so called prestigious job (doctor, lawyer...) that gives you 65 hours of work per week (minimum) driving you into burnout. Congrats 😂

As a rather jaded 40-year-old, may I just say that a LOT of this information also applies to when you finally leave school and jump into the crazy world of full-time employment. It doesn't matter what field you apply to or work in - these same myths you have introduced are also perpetuated in the job application and interview process within the corporate world. Except - maybe change "essays" to "cover letters" (man, I how I hate writing cover letters...).
Very true. I'm especially reminded of the infamous "what's your weakness" question at interviews. That is not the moment for authenticity and honesty. That is the moment to sell yourself as the candidate they should choose so tread carefully with how you answer yet sound natural. So much in life is about playing a role. Once you're out in the full time work real world, you see how the best employee isn't necessarily the one getting raises or being treated better.

My experience on the other side is that to impress me the most, it's generally the "non-critical flaw that you can show you're actively working on resolving" answer, because it's very rare to come upon.

My mom always says "be your BEST self" (the socially acceptable parts that we have control over) like at your job, and save your whole true self for your family and friends. Thinking about it that way sounds better to me at least. :)
about that last point: If you're accepted into a prestigious school but choose to go to a more middle tier school, you're going to have a significantly easier time. I got into UCLA but opted for UCSB (which is still a great, competitive school) and it's nice not being Pre-med student #250 out of 14000.

If everyone does very bad on a test, but you perform exceptionally, the curve often reflects that. So, if you go to a super prestigious school, you will be surrounded by lots of other big brained geniuses, making it hard to stand out both in terms of grades and relationships with professors. At a less competitive school, you will stand out more and have more time for internships, work experience, research opportunities, etc. because you don’t need to spend as much time studying.

As a junior, going to be a senior, I'm so glad I clicked on this video and that it came out now. I've been stressing so much with college applications and the idea of paying debt for an education, that alot of other countries pay for. So seeing what's a myth is so important for me to see.

I'll comment as someone in their mid 30s (oh gawd I feel old just typing that). I finished my schooling seevral years ago, grad school included. Back when I applied to universities the college counselor was clearly biased and would treat UCs as the goal schools and CSUs as the backup schools. I turned down a UC and opted to attend a CSU because it had the program I truly wanted. And flash forward to me taking a psychopharmacology course in grad school for fun (yes, the actual psych majors looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted to take that course yet they were only taking it as a requirement). My professor was offered a position at UCLA and was invited to observe the UCLA version of our course. When she returned she knocked down the page requirement on our paper and said the UCLA version was so much easier. Ultimately she accepted the position at UCLA because it allowed her to assign a grad student to teach many of her courses, allowing her to focus her time on research instead. I got to learn directly from an expert in her field who routinely worked on research for the government and major pharmaceutical companies, while the UCLA students got a grad student teaching the course. That's something people don't routinely bring up about UCs. Apply to a school that has a program you truly want and don't get caught up in the whole prestige part. Remember that what you need is a program that will prepare you to work in your field of choice.
I had a similar experience! My CSU professors were all PROFESSORS and when I went to a private *prestigious* grad school I was rarely taught by the professor whose name was attached to the course. I also realized recently my class sizes at the CSU were typically much smaller and more personal than my friends classes who went to Berkeley, UCSD, etc. However, I would say the college>career guidance seemed to be more visible at Berkeley/other UCs than at my school. You had to know where to look.

There were long-term studies that followed grads of Ivies/ brand name schools vs. state schools, etc. and found that those with especially STEM majors made similar salaries; basically no difference. A friend of mine is a Harvard grad and he works for FedEx as a driver. Not in-between jobs but his regular job he's had for yrs.

"Be yourself" actually doesn't apply to anything well, not just college admissions. Either you're what other people already like, in which case the advice is useless, or else you aren't, and then it's harmful to you. Be yourself as much as circumstances allow, sure, but realize people are generally pretty narrow-minded, and plan accordingly.
I would love to have seen this before I started freshman year. Based my entire high school career to hopefully to get into a Ivy League. I didn’t though and it did feel like all the work I put in was a waste. I wish I could have have gone out more throughout high school( mixture of studies and micro managing parents)but now I’ll definitely be enjoying my time in Hoboken!!
Im in middle school. First year. And already, within the first week, they showed up this “beast mode” video which finished with, “Don’t sleep when youre tired, sleep when youre done.” The video basically just told us that if we didnt spend every minuted going towards success, then we were pathetic and would fail in life. So if anyone else had to watch that, DONT LISTEN TO IT
Biggest regret in HS was focusing all my energy on studies and being antisocial. Wish I tried more things and broke out of my shell more. I was #1 in my class but just dropped out of college because I hated it (and the panorama) and I've never been more happy and free in my life. When your life revolves around something that is literally a social construct that doesn't really effect life over all (cough grades) it is the most freeing thing to step back and not be burdened by it. Of course now the only burden I have is being able to pay the bills haha. Also BIG judgement coming from everyone I went to HS. Every time someone asks me "how's college?" I'm like oh I dropped out, and it's like the biggest shock for them. But I'm happy and you have to decide what path is right for you.
I'm a little older at 23 but I finally just graduated from my local community college (took so long bc of health stuff) and will be transferring to UC Davis soon. Originally I had felt pretty sad about not getting into my top school, Berkeley, but this video actually helped me in regards to my feelings of inadequacy and inferiority!! And Davis is still an amazing school, we're just so surrounded by the fake magic of ✨the elite✨
I'm so glad I am not going to a traditional university, its just not worth all the debt. Also I feel traditional university is not for me, since testing is all they care about and thats annoying.

A lot of school rankings are based on research output from the professors at that school and other factors that don’t actually affect your education there directly. Prestige is also tied up with how competitive it is to get in, which once again doesn’t guarantee quality of education. Mostly, people care about prestige because of the people you meet at elite schools and the network you can build.
It literally makes me itch all over thinking that in the States admissions are choosen reading about what a person participated in on high school, what race they are, literally everything about ones life. In my country you have to get the best grade you can in school overall and then do the exams (which are national and the same for everyone) that each degree and university require. Then, a computer program takes these grades, puts them in order (from higher to lower), and will autonomosly figure if you enter or not. No one knows at the time of admission what's your race, where you live, what you've done... The universities are simply sent the data of the people that were accepted after this process.
to be honest I’m only really aiming for top tier schools cause it’s one of the few schools that would give me a full paid tuition with the generous amount financial aid they have sormtimes
While I'm not from the US or I have no plans to study abroad in the US. I think that learning from you is great especially more on Ivy League schools because of how expensive with it. I also agree that we all have our shortcomings and as well of the Ivy League being a lottery ticket.

In my opinion, college is over hyped. People forget that any degree can get you anywhere . If it becomes too stressful to go to school then something is wrong. I was one of those teens. I was so sad realizing that I couldn’t go to my “dream” school. Colleges pick whoever they want to whether you meet all the requirements or not. It’s a lottery especially for very well known schools. I went away and I realized going to a school that was close to home was way easier financially and a lot less stressful. Don’t go away if you know you can’t afford it either . Taking out loans doesn’t solve starving on campus! Side note: don’t stress about getting into a certain school. As the years go by, you won’t even care about the school and you just want to graduate ! After a certain point you just want to get into your career and move on . I can list more stuff but this comment would be too long lol

I turned down UCSB in favor of CSULA because it had the program that I truly wanted and had actual connections to my field. I never cared about the prestige of the university, only that it served its purpose for my degree goal. I remember how during the application process the college counselor at my high school basically said UC was always better and CSU schools were just backup schools. Such antiquated views.

As an upcoming hs freshman who thinks they know everything, lolz, one thing I would say is dont pick a topic for your essay based on something you think your college would like. I have a connection to an admission officer, and she says she gets sent so many applications, and this is how yk it's common since they're all formulated the same way, about kids using an event in their life and trying to twist it to be fitted to the college's, I guess, stereotypical standard. Also wish me luck next school year :)
University admisssion in the US has never been based on merit in fact it has always been based on class and previously race. Affirmative action worked to correct the fact that for generations minority groups were overwhelming excluding from attending universities in the US. Even today the largest issue with university admissions especially for prestigious institutions is the legacy admission also the fact that class plays a huge part in access to things like clubs, sports, tutoring etc in high school and middle school or the ability to fake it. I went to school in the inner city primarily in a district where we for the most part we had less extra curriculars, less electives and our teachers were getting laid off constantly. Even thought I was always in major work/gifted and talented programs taking honors and AP since middle school it was tough to be what colleges wanted. These are the reasons why affirmative action is needed for kids who despite how much they try or potential they just don’t have the same access as some other kids to pad their apps. I applied to Ivys on a whim because I knew that if I got in I was poor enough to get a free ride. So many people I went to schools had fafsa efc’s of less than $50. So no affirmative action isn’t the problem the problem is that there are many wealthy individuals who are subpar who have paid their way through life and university is no different.
This would have been helpful a year ago🥲 I applied to a community college and a local private university, bc I really didn’t want to attend university right outside of school. I’ll be attending the private uni in the fall. I’m excited for it but very scared bc I barely graduated high school. My goal for college is to try my best tk ether succeed and invest myself into school studying, and school activities. Personally I want to do the CC route that directs to a likely state school. I'm not gonna want to deal with debt. I'd much rather get the best I can out of a great state college, like how you were talking about at the end, than end up in huge debt because I wanted to go to an expensive school. Everyone's different, but that's what I hope to do.

As a high school counselor I think this was very helpful. I try to tell my students and parents these things about elite admissions all the time (I also use the 'lottery' term) but often they just don't believe me. Especially that they can't take it personally if they get a "no" from these highly selective schools. So I do my best to support them in what can be a stressful and competitive process.
In Britain, we can only apply to five courses. Ahhhhh.... I also have no clue how to write my personal statement. The courses I'm aiming to apply to are completely different. Some form of science and them an art based one. I'm so lost 😂😭
I'm applying to some postgraduate schools and are really shocked by this video. Seems like I don't have to be too sad when knowing they all rejected me :) There are always better way for me to go.

And already, within the first week, they showed up this “beast mode” video which finished with, “Don’t sleep when youre tired, sleep when youre done.” The video basically just told us that if we didnt spend every minuted going towards success, then we were pathetic and would fail in life. Biggest regret in HS was focusing all my energy on studies and being antisocial. Wish I tried more things and broke out of my shell more. I was #1 in my class but just dropped out of college because I hated it (and the panorama) and I've never been more happy and free in my life. When your life revolves around something that is literally a social construct that doesn't really effect life over all (cough grades) it is the most freeing thing to step back and not be burdened by it. Of course now the only burden I have is being able to pay the bills haha. Also BIG judgement coming from everyone I went to HS. Every time someone asks me "how's college?" I'm like oh I dropped out, and it's like the biggest shock for them. But I'm happy and you have to decide what path is right for you.

I'm a little older at 23 but I finally just graduated from my local community college (took so long bc of health stuff) and will be transferring to UC Davis soon. Originally I had felt pretty sad about not getting into my top school, Berkeley, but this video actually helped me in regards to my feelings of inadequacy and inferiority!! And Davis is still an amazing school, we're just so surrounded by the fake magic of ✨the elite✨
"be yourself" is actually the stupidest thing I've heard as advice for getting into the college you want.
I'm so glad I am not going to a traditional university, its just not worth all the debt. Also I feel traditional university is not for me, since testing is all they care about and thats annoying.

This video really introduces new perspectives to the college admissions process. I am also wondering about schools themselves and what makes specific schools ex. Ivy League prestigious and top schools, anyone have any insight on this (Jasmine too!)?? :)
A lot of school rankings are based on research output from the professors at that school and other factors that don’t actually affect your education there directly. Prestige is also tied up with how competitive it is to get in, which once again doesn’t guarantee quality of education. Mostly, people care about prestige because of the people you meet at elite schools and the network you can build.

It literally makes me itch all over thinking that in the States admissions are choosen reading about what a person participated in on high school, what race they are, literally everything about ones life. In my country you have to get the best grade you can in school overall and then do the exams (which are national and the same for everyone) that each degree and university require. Then, a computer program takes these grades, puts them in order (from higher to lower), and will autonomosly figure if you enter or not. No one knows at the time of admission what's your race, where you live, what you've done... The universities are simply sent the data of the people that were accepted after this process.

While I'm not from the US or I have no plans to study abroad in the US. I think that learning from you is great especially more on Ivy League schools because of how expensive with it. I also agree that we all have our shortcomings and as well of the Ivy League being a lottery ticket.
Okay I need advice. I am an international and just got a accepted with a scholarship to University of the Pacific. Can anyone tell me should I really go there. Especially since the price is still too high for me and my family. I have really dreamed of studying abroad but now I don't know.
I have never been there but I know a few classmates and friends who go there. What are you planning to study there? I think it may be worth it if you were accepted into one of their health programs (pharmacy, dentistry).
In my opinion, college is over hyped. People forget that any degree can get you anywhere . If it becomes too stressful to go to school then something is wrong. I was one of those teens. I was so sad realizing that I couldn’t go to my “dream” school.
Colleges pick whoever they want to whether you meet all the requirements or not. It’s a lottery especially for very well known schools.
I went away and I realized going to a school that was close to home was way easier financially and a lot less stressful. Don’t go away if you know you can’t afford it either . Taking out loans doesn’t solve starving on campus!
Side note: don’t stress about getting into a certain school. As the years go by, you won’t even care about the school and you just want to graduate ! After a certain point you just want to get into your career and move on . I can list more stuff but this comment would be too long lol

I turned down UCSB in favor of CSULA because it had the program that I truly wanted and had actual connections to my field. I never cared about the prestige of the university, only that it served its purpose for my degree goal.
I remember how during the application process the college counselor at my high school basically said UC was always better and CSU schools were just backup schools. Such antiquated views.

As an upcoming hs freshman who thinks they know everything, lolz, one thing I would say is dont pick a topic for your essay based on something you think your college would like. I have a connection to an admission officer, and she says she gets sent so many applications, and this is how yk it's common since they're all formulated the same way, about kids using an event in their life and trying to twist it to be fitted to the college's, I guess, stereotypical standard. Also wish me luck next school year :)
Being Asian probably doesn’t help. Unbelievable, admissions not based on merit anymore. Affirmative action is horrible.
University admisssion in the US has never been based on merit in fact it has always been based on class and previously race. Affirmative action worked to correct the fact that for generations minority groups were overwhelming excluding from attending universities in the US. Even today the largest issue with university admissions especially for prestigious institutions is the legacy admission also the fact that class plays a huge part in access to things like clubs, sports, tutoring etc in high school and middle school or the ability to fake it. I went to school in the inner city primarily in a district where we for the most part we had less extra curriculars, less electives and our teachers were getting laid off constantly. Even thought I was always in major work/gifted and talented programs taking honors and AP since middle school it was tough to be what colleges wanted. These are the reasons why affirmative action is needed for kids who despite how much they try or potential they just don’t have the same access as some other kids to pad their apps. I applied to Ivys on a whim because I knew that if I got in I was poor enough to get a free ride. So many people I went to schools had fafsa efc’s of less than $50. So no affirmative action isn’t the problem the problem is that there are many wealthy individuals who are subpar who have paid their way through life and university is no different.

This would have been helpful a year ago🥲 I applied to a community college and a local private university, bc I really didn’t want to attend university right outside of school. I’ll be attending the private uni in the fall. I’m excited for it but very scared bc I barely graduated high school. My goal for college is to try my best tk ether succeed and invest myself into school studying, and school activities. I started watching your studying videos to help me learn bc you’re very truthful and down to the point. Thank you
Growing older and going into college things and applications this video really helped. Including how when you get out you have to pay and classes, etc.
Personally I want to do the CC route that directs to a likely state school. I'm not gonna want to deal with debt. I'd much rather get the best I can out of a great state college, like how you were talking about at the end, than end up in huge debt because I wanted to go to an expensive school.

As a high school counselor I think this was very helpful. I try to tell my students and parents these things about elite admissions all the time (I also use the 'lottery' term) but often they just don't believe me. Especially that they can't take it personally if they get a "no" from these highly selective schools. So I do my best to support them in what can be a stressful and competitive process.
