The pinky hook is a bit awkward, but it's there for a reason. Check out the extrusion at the back end of the outer slide. It's very sharp. Without that guard, you can take a pretty good chunk out of your pinky.
@Trent Hamilton I think I need to clean my trombone. Should I give it a bath? Also, my eupho stinks, but not sure if that needs a bath or another way of cleaning. I'm new to brass, and I've been in a coma for eight decades. Thanks for reading.
Yes, you can give it a bath. Warm water with a bit of detergent should be fine. Use a trombone slide brush on it. Ensure it is completely dry before re-assembly, do not apply too much pressure to the slide tubes when drying off. Lubricate everything, then reassemble. Regarding your eupho, you can also give that a bath. Also hook into the tubes around the valves and the leadpipe with a flexible brush.
An interesting comment brokenwrench1 ! I have a Getzen 90 Deluxe horn on which I have replaced the brass bell with a sterling (?)silver super deluxe bell . It is a horn that I find I need to be really warmed up on . When I am not it is certainly subdued . Again though , it is up to the player as it will open up very well . I think it is a very good horn now . It now has Harrelson heavy bottom caps as well . What makes it a very good player is that it is so even from tone to tone through the scale . That feature allows the player to create a very nice sound . ( Apologies Trent , another great video , you sure had that trom working very well )
this horn was designed to compete with the olds super trombone at a cheaper price.it was next to the top of the line in the lineup. and you could buy it as a combo with a valve section as well as the slide the problem getzen had with the tri metal horns was all hat extra metal they put on in the art deco style was it deadened the tone especially in the cornets and trumpets. the thinking was to reinforce student horns against easy denting from beginners.
The pattern of people leaving one brass manufacturing company and forming their own is very, very common in the brass instrument making world full stop - lots of the top custom makers started out working for other companies, some of the bigger companies were founded by people who left other companies (Kanstul for example, was a Benge employee)
I actually own this one. I'm a trumpet player who plays around on trombone, and this is the one I have. I'm a bit bummed because the pipe that the thumb ring sits on is bent so that the bell is angled pretty close to the slide. Also the slide isn't great on mine. Anyway, nice review.
I'm a euphonium player and I just picked up a getzen super deluxe with the hope of learning trombone. I just can't figure out where the slide positions are at and memorize them. Any tips?
1=closed slide 2= slightly out 3 hand brace lined with bell brace 4= back lined with bell brace 5= slightly out from 4 6= further out still 7= as far as you can go
Hi Trent, I came across an "Elkhorn Div. of Getzen" Trombone with only numbers in the serial series. No letters. Is there a source for these serial numbers?
I need your help! I'm on school break at the moment and i brought my instruments home to practise. I keep my tenor horn by the back door (which is draughty) and we've just had snow. I picked up my instrument to practise just now and the sound isn't clear and the pitching isn't right. It souds like when you shove a scarf into the bell to play it, but nothing is down there because it's been in my case! I don't if the cold weather has affected it, but i need your help fast, as i am also doing my grade 6 exam soon and need a reply fast!!
I am by no means a trombone expert but my understnding is that normally the trombone has a cylindrical weight at the rear held between the bottom tube and the top return'out' tube. On this instrument that is missing but the back curved 180 degree curve seems to have a heavy brass solid piece soldered on the back. That is the best I can do to explain what I mean. As the song says 'you gotta know the territory'
501st Legion actually I’m in a gig and we are going to start with that and get peoples attention that’s what a fan fare is. Also I could care less if you don’t think I play. To say the least just to show of the CM scale 0 13 12 1 0 12 2 0 which not is a flat or a sharp
FIRST.

It sounds like he's added some reverb. That makes everyone sound nicer.

This instrument sounds beautiful!

Maurice Ravel I did a double take at the last part of the penultimate sentance
@Sami Faheem I died in brain surgery in 1937. Don't asked how I was resurrected.

I have one of these. The slide on mine played very nice after a cleaning.
Maybe you want to take that slide to Bruce Belo in Anaheim California.I enjoyed your playing.
Beautiful instrument

So, it is the microphone that made you sound bad in previous videos. I knew you had to be really good.
I used one of these in jazz band back in high school
Ive got a 50's Getzen Valve Trombone with a spot for a Hexagonal Lyre.
It sounds quite nice.
really cool trombone

Question, what’s your intro music?
It's a barbershop tag called "Cry".
Trent Hamilton thank you!

I’ll give you $50 for it

can you possibly do a review on Schiller Tubas? I'm looking for a cheaper priced tuba I can use for community bands and in a college level bands.
I don't have access to one, sorry.
What's the bore size of this horn?
What mouthpiece are you using?
Gold plated Denis Wick Classic. Not sure of the size though.

I believe he use a Denis Wick one

How much did you end up paying for this beauty?
I'll give you some belly button lint and a skittle I found in my pocket for it.
What mic did you use to record your demonstration of the trombone?
Shure PG42USB - only because that's what was cheap when I walked into a local 2nd hand store.
Interesting . I see the counterweight is on the back rather thah across the two pipes at the back.
There is no counterweight? What are you referring to?
Trent Hamilton I believe he's talking about the brass at the very end that sticks out, probably some sort of brace

Ahh. There is no counterweight on this trombone; as is often the case with older instruments. The bit you are referring to is decorative.
What kind of mouthpiece are you using in this video?
Denis Wick 6BL I believe.
Wow
Hey Trent, big fan, but today i got into a drum corp

If you're old enough to be in drum corp, you're old enough to not have a Minecraft profile pic
