Wife's character is not underwritten.. if you watch closely, you can see 'A great Indian kitchen' inside her character.. she has her reason to do silence for Joji's actions
First the cigarette was smoke in the pool Then out of the pool Then in the backyard of house Then in his own room This shows that joji is becoming powerful At last he had to smoke cigarette up to the bathroom level is reached But he could not burn it or smoke The director Says without saying that was a sign that he was going to collapse.
Did u notice how far from the home Joji was smoking at the beginning of the movie? Later when he gained power, he was smoking inside his father's bed room...
As for Baburaj, I recommend watching Salt and Pepper. Plays an entirely different character and hits it out of the park for me. Also would be a lighter watch.
Malayalam movies are known to be subtle. Also to understand many of the situations, an understanding of the cultural context is essential. For eg, matters like the wife's motivations are typical of an Indian housewife and underlying un-worded frustrations.
In the scene where Kuttappan is hospitalised, Felix comes to hospital, goes in and chats with the doctors to see how Kuttappan is. In that chat the doctor, who is a classmate of Felix, asks Felix how he is related to Kuttappan (Aaraa ? Meaning ' who is this to you?'. Felix answers that Kuttappan is a " brother -in-law of sorts!" (vakayiloru aliyan!). However the relation is not so important, it seems. Felix is a distant relative and a well wisher of the family it seems, though the sincerety of his relation with Kuttappan is a little dubious! He tries to dissuade the sons from opting for an expensive surgery to their father when he comes out of the room after chatting with the doctors!
See the poster design title of JOJI, the (negative) space before 'J' shows the Air pistol, middle of the letter 'O' is actually a _pill_ or _capsule_ and 'I' has the shot from the pellet. *Ingenious design*
Joji takes the druken doctor in car and when he drops doctor at his house, the doctor looks at him and says millionaire.. the emotion triggered in Joji with that comment can be compared to the emotion triggered in Macbeth when the 3 witches predicts that he is going to be the next King :)
Its based on macbath but... their is one similar incident happened in kerala which is jolly murdercase .. a lady who killed most if her family member for the wealth
I really appreciate your honesty when it comes to movie reviews. Instead of pandering to the majority for the sake of likes and subscriber count, you always critique a movie from the perspective of a genuine lover of cinema. Good work guys...
Great review..! While watching Joji, I felt that there was more room for layering up the characters and bring about more intensity, especially at the end..
This channel is underrated. Also, a psychological trick if you guys need it. Displaying hands while talking builds trust. Maybe pull the camera a little away from you so that the audience can see your hand gestures more clearly. This builds trust.
The film reminded me much about irakkal (victims) movie directed by KG George and less of Macbeth..Irakkal off course was a movie ahead of its time....can watch in youtube
Fahad faasil movies that u must review- Carbon is my favourite one. He plays a greedy character searching treasure in a forest 2. Varathan - from the director of iyyobinte pusthakam . the climax is the game changer 3.Athiran- psychological horror thriller , very similar ( may be inspired by) to shutter Island. But there are some difference.
Thanks for reviewing, not correcting you however just trying to make the reviewers look at it in a different perspective, a way that we generally experience in our regions. Please note only Joji's character was inspired by Macbeth, but the story is written with situations based in the regions, societies and families based in Kerala, and also seen in many parts of India too. When it comes to other characters, they are also typically found in families in India. If you see initially Joji was also not allowed to freely talk his ideas, since he's considered the youngest, immature and loser sorts... And coming to the differences, specially seen in communities who have rich amounts of land and properties, this is a perfect and honestly connected well with our region's situation.... Coz this is how families are even now in many parts of India, having disputes over familial rights... And why less importance to the women's character? Coz even now, women in many villages do not have the right to voice their opinions freely, they spend their lives in four walls cooking.....The criticism is seen coz one you are directly relating to Macbeth and two may be coz you are not deeply familiar with the society and situations in Indian families...This is my feeling... Hope this statement finds you well....Thanks tc...
You can see the elements of theatre twice in the movie. The dining table is portrayed as theatre right from the titles. The first one is discussion on partition, the second one is the scene in which family interrogate Joji on the pellets . In both the occasions we can see characters coming on to the stage and deliver their parts. This is a major shakespearean concept 'a play within a play'.art within art.

Thank you :D Yeah with this one it was a bit different since we immediately reviewed it after we watched it... Normally we let a movie sink in more and think about it.
Dileesh pothan said joji is not for everyone... Its natural some may feel not connected to joji...And some may... Thats y they are not going to release it in theatre... For me joji worked very well... Absolutely enjoyed the movie and the character of movie👌.. In a way after kumbalangi the only fahadh film that satisfied me fully

I think you guys didn't get the movie, there no power shift or joji and his brother Jaison didn't want the power they wanted the money and asset of their father. Kuttappan P K didn't have 4 children, he had only 3. the 4th one you said is son of elder son jomon. In my opinion this movie gave me the knowledge of people affect the man's thinking but the critical or moral thinking of man should be done by himself
Amazon's subtitle was too bad. As a malayali i can say that because what each and every dialouge indicates in each scenes are seems different in the subtitles. Those nuances(which is important) are missing and replaced with inappropriate words.
You guys are awesome and over a period of time your review quality had grown leaps and bounds. To get in to nitty gritty of a completely foreign language , wow. Try to write shot stories and direct & tell that story to us. You are more than a movie critique now you should be making one.
Guys, this movie had lots of cultural nuances especially of certain christian community in Kerala.Till his fathers death and subsequent rituals especially in wrapped in the cultural nuances. So some of those things might not connect with people outside of Kerala. Bincy's role was very well written, so have to disagree with u there.it was so natural and subtle at the same time. btw,Dileesh Pothen acted(?) in the movie as one of the doctors in mask.
Good film, but I find the second half of the film to be weak because Joji lacks real motivation after the death of his father. The stakes seem low and never really escalate. The midpoint scene where he surveys the mansion from the hilltop implies that he wants more (greed), but does he really want more? For me, it seems like he needs emancipation from his own personal hell. As such, I think the film slows after Jomon confronts Joji. For me, Joji's lack of interest in his father's health is somewhat justified. There must have been public fights and arguments between Joji and his father before. His brothers would have known but perhaps did not openly sympathize with Joji. At times it feels as though they have not lived with each other and that they lack any kind of empathy. What I really needed was more grounding in their family dynamics. Jomon wants the truth of what happened, but not the truth within Joji - the true extent of him. Maybe he doesn't care. Maybe he's also as callous as his father, but the film doesn't really explore that. Or the fact that if push came to shove, Joji (or the family) was willing to see his father die. As such, for me, this turn seemed to be an easy, uninteresting writing choice, and the remainder becomes slightly predictable. I think Bincy is underwritten but not due to her silence, which is a cultural truth. She stands up for herself when she tells Joji to get his own water from the fridge - she's nobody's servant. She's a witness to a crime, so her silence is the act of an accomplice. But she needs more in this story. Though she has an indirect motive to see the father die, there is no guarantee that her status within the house will truly change. We don't know much about her relationship with her husband and his foibles except that they are distant (their spatial distance in the frame tells us that). But what does she think of their situation and him? She could see him as the weakest; after all, he apologizes for his own family's behavior and usually plays second fiddle to everyone. As such, perhaps she has great reason to confront her husband. They remain distant throughout. It would have been interesting if her long-term loyalties (perhaps sexual loyalty) were aligned with someone other than her husband. Is she sexually attracted to Joji and is the burning pot in the kitchen scene alluding to that? Thought her character could have been elevated a couple of notches. It could have been interesting had they had started to rationalize the death of their patriarch. "So what if he was murdered?" The characters lacked full inner journeys and the second half was too much about resolving the murder plot, which could have even been overlooked by the characters had they truly reflected on the decades of their father's abuse. Perhaps they all needed emancipation, not punishment. Does Joji or the family get that?
AG Radhakrishnan, sachidanandan 2 major intellectual figures in Kerala shared almost same opinion as that of Jimmy, they also mentioned that there are no great emotions,no big moments etc. But it's not the literature, it's the visual content that matters, in that sense I enjoyed the movie a lot.
Joji's problem is, he is so desperate to escape his situation that he is willing to go to any extreme for an easy fix but it always lands him in even more trouble. I laughed at the very last scene where he tries to end things but he end ups in even more trouble. The one issue I have about the film is that for a subject like this it should have been funnier, in my head that would have worked for the film considering the very dark story.
That is so Un-German of you😂😂.. loved the Fargo insights...yes it has resemblences with the series...not sure if I loved the new way of review..but still found it amusing 😊
One Negative i found, i dont know if its a negative.. I never understood poppy was jomons son until his death. Was it a script problem or did i miss something? I gave it a late night watch so had to seek some portion
watching u guys do unscripted review is really interesting, u guys should do this more with latest films when u have to put a review as soon as possible after the movie's release
This is one movie that needs language and subtitles can't match up to it. So I understand the vacuum you feel. The one thing that you have not caught... is the nature of the father ... Father is a controlling patriarch that doesn't believe in giving his adult children freedom or him having to cut them slack... A king who rules with an iron fist ... That confidence he owns up from his ability to take care of himself (pull up scene) and his not using age as an excuse to hold back from working hard (pulling the pipe out of the well scene)...his estate is his kingdom... His offsprings and the workers are his subjects. The only son he doesn't have a visible friction with, is the character played by baburaj... the the next son slaves to run their affairs, his wife slaves to run the home with no house help(the later half establishes that she isn't entitled to get any maid cos the father's rules), the last son is seen as a good for nothing. The intensity of the fear of the father and the lack of freedom is shown clearly at the time when the father is in the hospital and the second son is worried what his father would do to him if the load doesn't go out and joji needs some acknowledgment or permission to bring a horse to the front of the house. I found the movie difficult to watch .. I felt something in the pit of my stomach....why? .... It shows How a abusive parent child relationship can stunt personality/character development ...but that can not be held as an excuse to why someone would want to kill his wealthy parent ... Because then that is greed. After he killed his father , he gets the illusion of power And confidence (just watch the location of where he smokes a cigarette at different points in the movie... It starts farthest from his father's kingdom and finally in his kingdom) .. Which once tasted, escalates his actions... Even when he isn't in a position to move at the end... He isn't feeling week enough to admit...he chooses to not blink to the question put by the police officer.
Wife's character is not underwritten.. if you watch closely, you can see 'A great Indian kitchen' inside her character.. she has her reason to do silence for Joji's actions
Very good point!
She is the lady macbeth
Osr Korbin made this same remark
Behind every joji, there is a bincy
Yo thats a bot scam.
Do delete the two insta related comments.
Its misleading.
First the cigarette was smoke in the pool
Then out of the pool
Then in the backyard of house
Then in his own room
This shows that joji is becoming powerful
At last he had to smoke cigarette up to the bathroom
level is reached
But he could not burn it or smoke
The director Says without saying that was a sign that he was going to collapse.
Brother I have made "The Beauty Of Joji" . Tell me how is it .

Thank you ':D

And Bincy too. She would do all the household chores herself but after the father died, she kept a house help.
As for Baburaj, I recommend watching Salt and Pepper. Plays an entirely different character and hits it out of the park for me. Also would be a lighter watch.

A small correction : Felix is not their brother. He is a relative....
Didnt say but it appears hes their cousin.

Unnimaya (Anjam Pathira, Mahesinte Prethikaram (Sarah) - chill Sarah chill ) is the wife of script writer Shyam Pushkaran

Great Plot but poorly executed at certain places..

Well they are Austrians/Germans, and their vowels are pronounced similar to malayalam than to English.

I gave it a late night watch so had to seek some portion
We were also wondering for a long time whose son he is.
Nope , when they discuss about partitioning their wealth. Jomon mentions that he and his son doesn’t need anything
Popy calling Fahad papan is where they said it

Nice review !! Checkout Salt and pepper . ( The film was co-written by syam pushkaran and also starred baburaj)
Thank you :)
Was Felix also one of the brothers? I thought he was not directly related to the family. That's why he didn't get any of the father's stuff
