    Shawn liked my lesson on direct object.
    My lesson - direct object
    We don't have an indirect object as the sentence ends with a prepositional phrase.
    Thank you!

    The verb like in sentence number 7 is considered as an intranstive verb becouse its related with feeling and emotion so we can say its state verb. Thank you very much for your efforts.

    • @Marlene-zd4xm
      @Marlene-zd4xm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "Liked" is functioning as an Action Verb in that sentence. "Liked what?" the "Lesson." Lesson is the DO in that sentence. If you replaced "like" with a form of "be" then the sentence would not make any sense. "Shawn liked my lesson" --substitute "is" = "Shawn IS my lesson" so that doesn't work. Therefore, liked is functioning as an action verb in this sentence. Try the substitution rule when you are not sure about those "sense" words that can function both ways (AV or LV): Appear, Feel, Grow, Look, Prove, Remain, Smell, Sound, Taste, Turn, and maybe a few others:-)

      @@Marlene-zd4xm well I think to my undestanding ma'am, "the word "liked" was more of expressing an emotion than an action...and since action indicates movement, there was no movement happened but appreciation to that lesson. And also, I think, I'd consider the "liked" as a linking verb rather than action word. This is my take here...thank you :)

    • @rosemariemanuel8219
      @rosemariemanuel8219 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello... I believe that number 7 is considered as transitive verb. as long as there is subject, verb and direct object then it is transitive. However, if there's no direct object in every sentence, then it is intransitive, sir. thank you.

    • @Englishing
      @Englishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This explanation is about verbs that take TO or Nothing - I write YOU a letter - you can also say - I write a letter TO YOU - the indirect and direct objects do not change. They only change places. I hope it is clear.

    • @Marlene-zd4xm
      @Marlene-zd4xm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Englishing "to you" is a prepositional phrase. It is the object of the preposition, not the indirect object. Indirect objects are usually found between the verb and the DO. You cannot find the indirect object in a prepositional phrase.

      I'll give you a pattern format to the sentences, and you tell me what you think is the indirect object.....The pattern format is (subject + verb + indirect object + direct object) Hint: direct objects are like the physical items and indirect objects are the pronouns receiving the direct objects aka physical items. Now tell me what is the indirect object in your sentence?..

    Hey, thanks for this lesson. It was very useful. Just have a doubt with Q5. I bought it for my sister. Isn't 'for my sister' just a prepositional phrase? I'm afraid, there's no IDO in that sentence. If it is an IDO, then, what about, 'I bought it for my birthday'? Is "my birthday" indirect object? Cana sentence have more than one IDO? For example, My father got me a pen for my birthday. Are 'me' and 'my birthday' IDOs here? Please clarify.

    • @Englishing
      @Englishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. For my sister is IO here. You need to ask Who? that would make sense. However, it can also be a prepositional phrase. Your next question about having 2 IO, I cannot find an example right now, but I do think a sentence can have 2 IOs. In your example there is ONLY one IO. My father got ME (IO) a pen (DO) for my bday (prepositional phrase).
