I have a 78" tank with an FX6, inlet and outlet are both on the right hand side this cannot be changed, i have fitted a wavemaker on the opposite end pointing to the surface and have good water break up all along the surface, my problem is i have dead spots that collect a lot of poop, should i point the wavemaker down to skim the surface of the the substrate or fit a dual head with one pointing up and one pointing down
Thank you! I’m having problems with fine particles and substrate cleaning. Someone in a FB group mentioned Wavemakers, and your video was one of the first I found. It explained it really well! I’m starting off with a sunsun and if that works, I’ll consider getting a better one. Thank you.
Casey Phoenix hey thank you for the kind words! I’m so glad the video helped you, this was before I got comfortable on camera 😂 so I am glad to see it’s actually a useful video
Old video but very useful. My question is, what about rigs with overflows? If say the overflow is on the top left hand side of the tank, where should the wave maker be placed? Thank you
Thank you so much for the video. I think you did a great job at explaining the positioning and reason for it. What if I used two powerheads/wavemakers? What would be the best location and orientation for the second one?
Hi, great video thanks. i have a corner tank, where would you suggest i put wavemaker? intake is on the left but the shape makes it completely different...
V8ToYy hey thank you for watching! Glad to see this old video is still helping people! Do you have Instagram by chance? It would be much easier to explain if I could send you a video message
I put 2, one is exactly where you put yours and the other is on the opposite end but lower to the substrate. Low enough to blow the waste matter and keep it off the substrate as much as possible.
Hey thanks for watching, I really appreciate it, sorry for the lack of excitement this is an old old video 😁 but anyway 200 liter I think that’s 50-52 gallons right? I would go with something in the 800 gph range especially being that you have a rock hardscape. Ideally I would get a adjustable wave maker, something that can hit 800-1000 gph. But those are much more expensive
@@UnconventionalAquatics Yes, 200 L is equal to 55 gallons, so practically speaking, you are advising around 3000l/h wave makers. Adjustables are expensive so i'll stick with cheap, fixed rated wavemakers :) . Many thanks.
Great video. I have a canister filter on my 75 gallon Malawi tank. should I put the intake in one corner (left) and have the spray bar on the same side pointing right or have the spray bar on the right side pointing left toward the intake?
Thanks brotha, so what ive done and seen others do as well, if your not running wave makers or power heads, i would pick a side for your intake (far left or right) and the since the output of a canister isnt nearly as powerful as a wavemaker (unless your running a big canister) i remove the spray bar, so its literally just a 90 degree elbow , and position it just past your center brace (so hypothetically you have your intake on the left, put your output just to the right of your center brace pointed away from the intake) this gave me great results as far as circulation and skimming of the substrate, before i started using wave makers and power heads. i hope all that made a little bit of sense😅lol definitely let me know if it helps.
Very useful video thanks! I've thought about adding a wavemaker to my 400 litre tank to create better circulation but then got thinking about adding a second filter and using the outlets to generate flow, one high and aimed at the surface, one the opposite end part way down and aimed at the gravel. Would this work? I'd then also have the benefit of more filter media and more litres per hour being filtered. Anyone any idea if this is a good substitute for a wavemaker please?
Your minimalist fish tank in the background is just like mine with black gravel and white stone !!! I love it. (I have filters and 2 wavemakers in mine too ^^)
Hi, old video but very useful. I have 2 external units (either side at back) both use pre-filters and fish tale outlets, 2 air diffusers (either side at front), 2 air foam filters - but not the water agitation I want Tried a powerhead and it gives that extra water agitation and is very quiet - at back with anticlockwise flow in tank so it doesn't infer with air diffusers on front, fish don't mind so all good - I also have option to add an air pipe to the powerhead - but that makes too much noise
Speaking only on freshwater, I only use them for fish that come from environments with a current. Honestly i dont really use them for the fish, i use them mainly for the water quality benefits.
Looked everywhere for proper guidance on using circulation pump finally found it here. My problem is that I have only one canister filter on my 60 Gallon tank and the intake is not that powerful so need a circulation pump to have that floating debris caught into that intake . What would you advise on the power of the pump. I have silver dollars, angels and juvinile clown loach
Aditya A. Aima hey thank you for watching and I’m glad the video helped. With angels I would stick to something between 500-700 gph, is it a 4 foot long 60 gal?
Unconventional Aquatics yes 4 foot long and when you say 500 to 600 gph you are referring to circulation pump, right? and not filtration coz currently it's sunsun 302 rated for 264 gph and which is reduced to less than half of that after all that media
yeah i mean the circulation pump alone, its tough with fish like angels, it may be best to get a wave maker that you can adjust the flow on, like the (Jabeo) line. (pretty cheap and have nice features).
Thank you. Your explanation was perfect for the placement. I'm having some issues with the placement and potentially the power of my wavemakers. I have two sunsun 1300gph wavemakers in my 125. Are they under powered, overpowered, or just right for my aquarium in your opinion?
Cody Ridd Hey thank you for watching, I greatly appreciate it. In my opinion 1300 gph should be just fine, is it a 6 foot 125? If your interested I just made a new video a week or so ago on this. It s a lot better as I have progressed drastically in my video making lol
I'll take a look at that video. The change in position has been amazing. I have two 1300 GPH wavemakers and I do have a 6 foot 125 gallon. In your opinion should I take one out?
question, i have topfin 29 gallon i have a aquaclear 30 powerhead , i have my aqaclear 50 on the right side and im still not sure where to put my power head😔.
Aspire put it right where the water comes in from the filter or you can put it where the dead spot is, meaning whatever side does not have good water circulation
@@madlinks509 lol!! It actually doesn't🙂 was just wondering how you would place them... Right now I have them at the top just for more surface aggitation.
Great info. But quick question. With single filter set ups, canister, where do you have the outlet pointing? I know you place the wavemaker same side as the inlet. I assume the outlet is on the other side but where do you aim or point it? Towards the front? Or directly to the inlet side? Or do you use the spray bar? Thanks in advance 😊
Christopher Abella hey thanks for watching, so for example if your intake was on the left, I would put your output in the middle or slightly past the midline of the aquarium and point it to the right. Not sure if that made sense. I actually just put a video out the other day on this that will probably help a lot.
Unconventional Aquatics got it. Thanks so much. I'm gonna check out the video. It's funny because everyone has their own way of setting things up. Since I'm a noob I just watch the experts on TH-cam and take as much info as I can. So intake left back corner, out take middle back pointing right, then wave maker on the left side pointing up towards the right side👍
for tall tanks you may need multiple wave makers to get the current all the way to the bottom. In your case depending on your budget and what you have in the tank, i would try something like the Jabeo wavemakers so you can adjust the flow, something with a range of 500-1000 gph What kind of fish is it stocked with?
lil Axle420 _ hey thanks for watching, to answer your question yes you can use them in a tank with angles, you will just need to mount the wave maker to a flat panel. What kind of tank do you have? As far as shape is concerned. If you didn’t want to go with a wave maker, some other options are air stones, sponge filters, and angling outputs on return lines. Your goal essentially is to break the surface tension of the water. That’s why I prefer wave makers because I can break surface tension, and get great circulation which has a ton of benefits as well. I hope this helps, if all else fails I can make a video going more in depth, just let me know 👍
Unconventional Aquatics hey thanks for the reply. I have a 29 gallon tall I believe and I would best describe the shape as half a cylinder almost. And also I was just unclear what you meant by mounting it to a flat panel? And what wave maker would you recommend i get. Thank you for your help
lil Axle420 _ so in your case, the only flat panel of glass is your back panel, and that is where it would easiest to mount your wave maker. I am a huge fan of the SunSun Mini Wave maker (JVP110) they are cheap and do the job . They push 538gph so it may be to much for a 29 gal. I’m honestly thinking your best bet, just because the tank is more narrow and tall , if you ran any kind of canister filter and turned the output up at a slight angle, that would provide plenty of surface agitation. Or you could go the air stone / sponge filter route
Unconventional Aquatics o forgot to mention I do have 2 side panels on my tank, sorry I didn't really describe the shape that well, but you do you think 528 gph is to much or will it be okay I also have a planted tank? Sorry to take up your time haha water irritation can be kinda tricky
what do you have for stock in your tank? in theory depending on the fish it will be fine, for example my old Nano reef tank was a 20gal long and i used this exact wave maker and it was fine. some fish are just sensitive to alot of circulation. And no worries at all im here to help any way i can👍

What size wavemaker can I buy for a 54l aquarium
Which air pump you use?
What small wave maker would you recommend for a 20 gallon long?
