    I must admit that East Coast Racer is probably my favourite piece of Prog of the 21st century. I'm glad that you have enjoyed the album - so far!

    This is a very special band and David was such a beloved member. I still tear up listening to his vocals. I’m so glad you took this time to hear the magnificence! ✨❤️✨

    July 22 2022 I heard my first cut from a Big Big Train album, On that day I went totally insane. I found that band that I had been searching for almost forever. The Big sound that I enjoy above all other things came at me from all directions. I spent the next several weeks buying up BBT albums. I have most all of them now. Its a year later and I listen to them almost every day. I love your take on the band and I know that you are like me in a music way Progressive Music and a Big Sound. I am now 75 years old and this band has made my many years of listening to music validated. Jim keep up your good work. I'm glad I found your TH-cam channel.

      Thanks so much! Yes, it’s fabulous isn’t it? I’ve followed a similar path and sought out a lot of their back catalogue too. Lots of listening to come!

    I CAN'T SMILE ANY BIGGER......😊
    David Longdon was amazing.....and I've always loved how the drumming on ECR is evocative of a train racing down the tracks. The Mallard indeed(if you didn't know ,this song is about the British Steam Locomotive that broke the land speed record)

    I’ve been listening to prog since 1970 and BBT is right up there with Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc. BBT is my absolute favorite band and one of the best ever. Great Choice!!

    ECR is my current favourite song so this was interesting. At times the strings sometimes seem superfluous but the new bigger ending is great. Glad you liked it, Jim. It keeps getting better every time you hear it. Looking forward to the other three parts. Cheers!

    I was so pleased they did this - I saw the band live at Aylesbury with Alberto and am going to Cadogan Hall this September. They are underrated and are brilliant! And this is some of the best. I do hope they do a companion album called perhaps ARTS AND CRAFTS as they have some excellent material about said topic. The latest incarnation carry the torch forward stunningly as we hear on ATLANTIC CABLE (and I was lucky enough to see.) They are touring soon through Europe - do go and see them!

    Hi Jim. Glad you finally got to BBT. Hopefully well worth the wait. Their distinct advantage is undoubtedly the brass sections that add such a dimension that is unparalleled in most other groups. Glad to see you so animated. All the best Dave✅✅

    Amazing to hear the remarkable efforts on ECR but for me the original is more in your face and intimate and connects more. This was always going to be the case for one of the greatest songs ever. First love and all that but thumbs up for making a symphonic version quite an undertaking

    • @Whizzer
      @Whizzer ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, this new recording and mix doesn't sound as cohesive and doesn't bring out some of the band's strengths that are most important for this song. I find that the original washes over me like a gentle wave, or a hearth's fire, whereas this version makes it sound more like you're in the room with the band.

    • @gedfaz
      @gedfaz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree... I actually prefer all the originals to those on ingeniuous devices (Why did they take 'Here she comes' out of ECR?). As much as its a great collection of songs I was dissapointed by Ingenious devices (but only because I'm so familiar with the originals... otherwise I'd be blown away!). David Longdon though.... what a voice!! what a loss.... :(

    This is the first time I’ve heard this version as I already have most of their recent stuff from Underfall yard onward, I must say I wasn’t planning on buying this album, but now I’ve heard this new version of what is clearly one of their best songs I might have to fork out for it.

    PS - I blew it as Langdon started the album before English Electric, The Underfall Yard. So he did sing on East Coast Racer, a great piece of art. I do have all their output, except the 1st album, which takes about 20 hours to listen to in its entirety.

    It's always a pleasure to watch you reacting to nuggets like this one, as a new born baby discovering brand new sounds around him ! Discrete interventions, always relevant ans sharp. Especially on this new version of "East Coast Racer", the ultimate Jewel of the Nile in this genre of prog. BBT is the major band to compose such a musical journey. And that's right, David Langdon's tragic death sounds like we lost the most sensitive and powerful voice of prog. The main instrument (among many !) of the crew. D'Virgilio is also stunning on drums... "Voyager" is another pearl you're going to listen to. I envy you to discover it for the very first time. Keep your smile and freshness, Jim. Cheers from Pars.

    Good evening Jim,
    Finally Big Big Train.
    Never heard this album so I’m curious. Liked their previous albums very much.
    Oh, it’s a sort of compilation album so the music must be familiar.
    East coast racer is well known and this version is different but so good.
    Enjoy the music 🎉

  • @kenl2091
    @kenl2091 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Had Covid not arrived when it did and had David Longdon not died I have no doubt that BBT would have been this decade's Porcupine Tree - huge within the prog world and partially crossing over into the mainstream to reasonable financial and critical success. How they progress from here is anyone's guess as I fear that Longdon was at least 50% responsible for the something 'extra' that fuels real greatness. Time will tell.

    I've been looking forward to hearing this although BBT didn't go back far enough into their discography for songs to re-record.
    Been listening to BBT for many years. Actually enjoy their early output as much or more than the David Langdon era. Check out The Difference Machine, Gathering Speed, English Electric as my favorites.

    Took me while to get into this band. I've enjoyed them for the last few years. I had put them on my list as a must see live band. I enjoy their quintessential English sound and themes. I am nervous about their new direction without David even though to be honest I wasn't as impressed by their last two albums. I feel like they started to lean towards the Spocks beard side of things, who I really can't get into.
