  • Nature Note #5 - The sounds of summer - a cacophony of cicadas, frogs, or nesting Great Blue Herons?! Yes, listening for the odd sounds that herons make when they are gathered at the tops of trees in their rookeries to nest is how I have been lucky enough to find and observe these unique gatherings.
Have you found a heron nest before? A bird nest of any kind? Many species of birds have their own way of nesting. It can be a complex woven nest, a pile of sticks, a scrape on the ground, or a hole in a muddy river bank. Next time you find a nest take some time to observe and ask questions. You never know what you might discover.

Have you found a heron nest before? What species/how did you find it?

What a nice location to film! It was fun to see you get distracted by the osprey. You shared such good information! And I love the emphasis on respect for animals as you are trying to observe their natural behaviors!
PS - Nature is powerful, and so are you is the best catch phrase!

Thanks for the wonderful comment and for watching. Yes, I believe it’s important to think about how our actions and wildlife viewing affect animals as we can get carried away pretty easily by the amazing details of nature. Glad you like the catch phrase!

Nice tips Gabe! Heron nests are fun to observe and also good to use as practice for spotting smaller nests of other species, it’s good to look for the movement of the birds in the trees. Evan and I have found some great blue heron nests, as well as a couple full rookeries! Stumbling across an egret and heron rookery in New Jersey while wading in the Salt Marsh is one of my fondest birding memories!

That’s awesome! Yes, I agree, great for practice. Rookeries are pretty neat, I’ve never seen egrets in a rookery but I have seen GBH and wood storks!

I’m sure you could find some nests if you looked….the amount of time you spend outside and around water…you can definitely find one. I believe they are mostly done nesting for the year so pay attention next year.

Not as much water here in AZ for herons. I do run across one every once in a while, definitely a surprise when we do. Enjoyed the nature note. Good one.

Great video Gabe. I have never found a Heron nest but I did find a injured heron last year. I was able to take it to a local wildlife rehabilitation center and get it the help it needed.

That’s awesome! Was it a great blue heron or a different species? That’s great that you were able to help it out. Was it caught in fishing line? I feel like that is a common cause of injury for them.

@@naturewithgabe It was a Great Blue Heron. I don't really know what was wrong with it except it couldn't fly.
