I remember when this first came out.... The graphics were unbelievable! Believe it or not.... The graphics for this game on genesis were a milestone.... This game was a trendsetter!
I distinctly remember a family member seeing me play this (although she didn't know I was playing a game) and she asked me what game I was watching lol
Absolutely! I bought a video game magazine a few months before this came out, and I used to take it to school and just stare at the pictures of the game and I could not wait to get it. It’s the first basketball game that had NBA teams and real players, and we couldn’t stop playing this. Tom Chambers and his dunks from nearly the 3 point line used to drive me crazy. But yeah, this was unreal quality in 1991.
Wow..laughing so hard watching this and it brings back so many good memories. Tom Chamber was a beast in this game for sure, I always took the Suns! Good stuff!
You basically did a cheat of having Chambers play center and use his speed at PF against a true center. I did the same thing but at least use the team. Memories, but not a great game.
Damn, I remember when my friend brought this home we damn near shit ourselves. Especially after playing double dribble all those years. Tom Chambers was frickin unstoppable in this game too. Man those were the good old days.
1989, I believe, myself, my bro cut class to pick this up asap first drop, a Tuesday in the a.m. Worth it. Magic was unstoppable from the corner (360 dunk from the 3pt line! Lmaooooo) so unfair and splash city.. love, #1, Until, NBA SHOWDOWN
My friend used to always want me to turn off the music when we played. And I was like “Dude, it’s a video game and video games have music. Sorry.” Guess he was looking for a more realistic game being a basketball fan and all. Whatever, bro. My Genesis, my rules.
Me and my two best friends used to skip school in junior high and go up to our buddies house that graduated the year before and play this game. We thought it was the coolest game ever. Tom Chambers and his dunk from like the 3 point line was great.
Went from double dribble to this, so this was like amazing to me... That music though, stuck with me... Everytime I see someone that's very slow on the court, in real life or when watching, esp if they are a big man , that song always pops in my head.
Classic! I remember only losing one time in this game. Tom Chambers was the only dunk that never missed or draw a charge. This is before Dan Marjerle became the three point shooting phenom. They only needed on this game was recorded stats. After this game, the EA Sports franchise kept making games slower and slower until they release NBA Showtime. This video brought back some old memories. I remember playing this game when Magic made the Announcement.
I always used Phoenix because it was a guarantee 2 pts lol I remember being about 10 when this came out I remember thinking this was real is shit specially when double dribble was the game until this dropped I just hated if you wanted to play the playoffs you had to literally play the whole 48 mins lol
Ah, Tom Chambers! I'll always remember him as the greatest video game athlete of all time! This brings back a lot of good memories. I still have the old Sega Genesis in the basement somewhere. I'll have to dig it up.
Loved how you had a clear path to basket with Chambers at 5:23, but ran him towards the 3-point line for his special dunk. I used to do that all the time.
The memories. I swear, me and my buddies saw the backboard break off a layup. We thought it was so weak. So we pick Philly or Phoenix for Barkley and Chambers's dunks just to break it again. It never happen.
At that time the only basketball game that had that feature (the breakable backboard) was Arch Rivals. Years later then came NBA Jam which had it and so did NBA Showdown 94' on the Sega Genesis.
I know it hard to believe, but it happen in Lakers vs Celtics on Sega Genesis. Everyone thinks we were lying. Barkley, Chambers, Drexler's dunks should have triggered it again. I spent a year trying to make it happen. Bulls vs Lakers had the breakaway rims (I think).
I've been playing Lakers vs Celtics since 1991, I've played it over 500 times in my lifetime and I've never encounter that feature in the game. Maybe it's well hidden in the game that I've never seen it. I'll post a small clip video of NBA Showdown 94' where Shaq breaks the rim.
These games were the coolest, LOL! ~_~ I couldn’t get td alley ooo pass like the cpu. I went back a few years ago to play it and it just came out so naturally.
bird had and unstoppable three point shot at the top corner right or less and if you did it right it was always hit the backboard .... a bank shot three and you would never miss!! my brother would try the guard just the top of the screen .... ridiculous because you would have to leave open everything else just a guard at top of the screen lol..
The music in this games was amazing...despite the very dated synthesizer sound it really rocks...my favorite is the music in the second half...that song is still in my head when I play hoops.
Well it's an awesome dunk but it will miss sometimes like all the other player's signature moves except for Tom Chambers double silent pump dunk who never misses
I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. My brother and I used to do exactly what you're doing on this video. We tried to see how many points we could get Chambers to score. I think we got up to 240 points in a full length game. We eventually got tired of it, but it was pretty funny for awhile.
Gotta love the signature moves. I remember Tom Chambers had the double pump. Jordan had the air reverse. Barkley had probably the best monster jam from the foul line basically. Who else was there?
...That fucking Tom Chambers dunk was the ultimate cheese. Guaranteed 2 points every time. in the later games, they gave it to Scottie Pippen. I'm a Bulls fan but it's still annoying as all fuck. but this brings back memories. good times. Thanks for the post.
As others have said, Only those who actually played this game back then knew of the GOAT -no , not Jordan , not Bird , not Magic, not Barkley, but the Legend that was TOM CHAMBERS!!
@xboyindahouse Spent many frustrating days playing this but my 1st time was the worst. Being from Chicago all of my family were Bulls fans so naturally picked the Bulls. My older cousin (who's game it was) chose the Suns and I said MJ and Pippen bout to kill them, u all know wat happened...lol great post to a classic game thx.
You couldn’t stop Chambers from gliding, and Jordan from the baseline was nasty with the reverse and the jumpman dunk in the paint was cheese. Oh yeah Bird is a corner specialist in this game, the bank is open
I use to use that bird turn around 3 pointer from the the top corner all day. .....it was automatic! My brother would get so frustrated because the lakers could never keep up. If bird got to the top of screen it was lights out!
Wow brings back alot of memories.me and my brother would have crazy rivalries on this shit.he was allways the bulls I was usually the Celtics or lakers lol
Before this game, I would always play Double Dribble on the NES and Great Basketball on the Master System. All the players in both games were the same size. Then Lakers vs Celtics came out and now the players kinda look like their real counter-parts from small guards to big forwards and tall centers.
@@xboyindahouse Amen. The improvement has been amazing over the years. Everytime I think they can get no better they do something amazing like having game announcers then improving to them actually commenting on the action. In 30 years it will be footage of the actual players
@@mikekillagreen9432 When I see my nephews play the new NBA 2K games on the PS4, I say to myself "Wow! Damn this game looks exactly like a real NBA game." We come a long way from the simple blocky graphics of the old Atari 2600 Basketball game to the 8-bit graphics of Double Dribble on the NES to the 16-bit graphics of Lakers vs Celtics on the Genesis to NBA Jam in the arcades then to the NBA Live games on the PS1 to NBA 2K on the Dreamcast and so on and now to the present day.
Yes, I've always liked the graphics in this game than the other "vs." games and also the music during gameplay is legendary while the other games removed it and it lacked soul.
i used to play this game alot. tom chambers could dunk from the three point line at the top of the screen. alvin robertson had the best move though, a michael jordan style layup.
I always thought I was the only one that knew the secret that was, the one they call Chambers. I loved twisting the knife in on my buddies that would do everything they could to attempt to win but I could even dunk from the 3pt line if I hit the angle right so they didn't stand a chance, didn't realize he could steal so well though
This was my ish right here...I would've been have up a long time ago though lol...He keeps doing that the same play, coming from the baseline with a dunk...Where is the defense 😂😂😂 This is hilarious.
There's also David Robinson's left-handed windmill jam, MJ's up and under reverse and Clyde Drexler's free throw line dunk. But none were as unstoppable as Chambers.
I remember when this first came out.... The graphics were unbelievable! Believe it or not.... The graphics for this game on genesis were a milestone.... This game was a trendsetter!
Oh yes, the graphics were (still are) amazing. No other basketball game came close to Lakers vs Celtics at that time.
Before this the best graphics basketball game was double dribble so yes, this was groundbreaking
I distinctly remember a family member seeing me play this (although she didn't know I was playing a game) and she asked me what game I was watching lol
Facts this game was next level when it first came out and it had the real names and roster I was hooked

@optimusP76
this game has one of the best soundtracks for the Genesis
The music is fantastic!
Yes it is, it's one of my favorite soundtracks on the Sega Genesis
RetroBob nothing like a little Ron Jeremy porn soundtrack for the game 😂😂
Very nostalgic!
My friend used to always want me to turn off the music when we played. And I was like “Dude, it’s a video game and video games have music. Sorry.” Guess he was looking for a more realistic game being a basketball fan and all. Whatever, bro. My Genesis, my rules.

Oohhhh, Chambers was unstopable! Lol... freakin awesome to see this after decades!
Good God, I loved this game so much. And that Tom Chambers double pump dunk never missed and was pretty much unstoppable. lol
that dunk is always guarantee 2 points
Ah, yes, the old Tom Chambers double pump dunk glitch. And he doesn't even need Mark Jackson to boost off of. 😂

that double-pump dunk is unstoppable
+Williamkurk It's based on a real double pump dunk Chambers would do in-traffic in games. A tad unbalanced here though.
Great substitution at the beginning, I usually did the same 👍
I remember playing this non stop in 1990 it was incredible 😀
I used to KILL with the Suns. Tom Chambers and KJ
i remember Stockton used to dunk from the free throw line!! smh
yup, John Stockton has some hops lol and he also does a 360 dunk
