Renta was based on a real young lady who he met in Venice and was fascinated by. He maintained contact afterwards [with parents' OK.]

What I wanted out of this book was a portrait of Venice, not of a pervy old dying Colonel's obsession with a Venetian adolescent. We get a strong impression of the effect that Venice had on the colonel but very little of Venice itself. The novel is overly subjective & introverted, overly ego & id ridden. Thank god H. turned outward again to give us TOMatS. And thank god there were no women in it.
