One of the overlooked tracks from "Raintown". Always loved this track...best end track off an album....great lyrics on this one. One of the more "atmospheric" tracks the band did live.
I am shook that this has over 5k views yet only 43 likes!!🤨 This is pure, raw emotion, exceptional vocals in an outstanding performance, and projecting an important political message. Bravo DB👏💙
Mr Prime, never fails to deliver on the KEYS, love that man.. Miss Mr Kelling of Course.... This band have a habit of coming back to me Time and Time again... They are not easy to categorize! This Song reminds me of my Sister, we used to sing it in the back seat of the car.
When I was a child of 13, I wanted to be James Prime, I never wanted to be Ricky Ross, but I did want to be jimbob.. with a collection of Rolands Korgs Yamahas etc etc, The closest I got to this was eventually a mediocre Yamaha and a Packard upright which I had to stick pieces of card from the inside of rizzla ciggie papers under the pivot point of the keys, as the original felt had eroded away, it worked surprisingly well.... for several years. Those were the days!
Liverpool have just won the Premiership. After 30 years. In 1989 I travelled back from Hillsborough after 96 lost their lived. Raintown played through the coach speakers. This song will always remind me of that day.
All northern British towns are Raintowns. Destroyed heavy industry. Busted communities. Lost opportunities, London or bust. That is the album. Chocolate girls or Dignity?
The lyrics depict a narrative of disillusionment, contrasting the individual's vitality against the oppressive atmosphere of a city. With recurring motifs of "this town" and "lovers on love downs," the song emphasizes the detrimental impact of the urban environment on personal relationships and dreams. The imagery of a church, clock tower, and the cyclic routine of work and home life symbolize the monotonous, inescapable nature of city life. Yet, there's an undercurrent of hope and the desire for authenticity, as seen in the advice to abandon societal expectations ("leave your books and maps") in search of a more genuine existence. This juxtaposition creates a poignant commentary on the struggle between individuality and the homogenizing effect of urban life.
Honestly you've perfectly encapsulated it, just too many big words. My favourite song from the best album iv'e listened to, it's a masterpiece and so underrated.
close your eyes and go to sleep from the howling howling over these streets people stare 'cause you're so mad that wild wild spark that innocent laugh but baby that's this town it won't happen next time yeah baby that's this town lovers on love downs it's this town to be blamed at the top of the block there's a church at the top of the tower there's the clock and it rings and it sighs 'cause there's no time for all these lies but baby that's this town it won't happen next time yeah baby that's this town lovers on love downs it's this town to be blamed baby take a walk round to my house throw off these tired eyes and tears and these frowns take that lane so narrow and deep and walk those regrets that fill your sleep you say your sleep is nakedb and your dreams are clothed but what about your footsteps who sees them go who lets you know about these things who's gonna say the things we think so take your keys and pack your bags but leave your books and leave your maps 'cause baby that's this town it won't happen next time yeah baby that's this town it won't happen next time yeah baby that's this town it won't happen next time sure baby that's this town lovers on love downs it's this town to be blamed it's this town to be blamed work work work rain rain rain home home home again again again work work work rain rain rain home home home again again again
I agree. It is my least favourite track from Raintown even though it is one of my all time favourite albums. This version has a different edge to it and is more powerful than on the album. I cannot believe it is thirty years since the rainy summer of 1987 that I first heard tracks from Raintown on Red Rose Radio, the local commercial station in Lancashire, and was absolutely hooked on it from then on.
A brilliant song from a vastly underestimated group.
Ricky!!! Both vocal range and great lyrics!!

close your eyes and go to sleep
from the howling howling over these streets
people stare 'cause you're so mad
that wild wild spark that innocent laugh
but baby that's this town
it won't happen next time
yeah baby that's this town
lovers on love downs
it's this town to be blamed
at the top of the block there's a church
at the top of the tower there's the clock
and it rings and it sighs
'cause there's no time for all these lies
but baby that's this town
it won't happen next time
yeah baby that's this town
lovers on love downs
it's this town to be blamed
baby take a walk round to my house
throw off these tired eyes and tears and these frowns
take that lane so narrow and deep and walk those regrets that fill your sleep
you say your sleep is nakedb and your dreams are clothed
but what about your footsteps
who sees them go
who lets you know about these things
who's gonna say the things we think
so take your keys and pack your bags
but leave your books and leave your maps
'cause baby that's this town
it won't happen next time
yeah baby that's this town
it won't happen next time
yeah baby that's this town
it won't happen next time
sure baby that's this town
lovers on love downs
it's this town to be blamed
it's this town to be blamed
work work work
rain rain rain
home home home
again again again
work work work
rain rain rain
home home home
again again again
One word "Class"!
Outstanding.
❤
