excellent. i was shown this as a theater sound engineer. the more tracks you add, the more decibels get added onto the main mix. I've been experimenting with bass exchange for a while and i found this to be the best way to reduce the addition of decibels on the main mix. great read
Very nice tutorial ... an idea for you: Make a 10 minute mix and point the camera like in this video, showing your mixer ... would be very interesting to see what you exactly do, because everybody does it a little bit different I think. Greets, Fabian
Dj Tutorial, I appreciate your greatness of ur heart to teach us all the techniques and tips which u accrued in Djing throughout ur experience in a simpler way. I request u to send us the link ( if any), how to save cue buttons in SDM memory cards ( from home itself) and how to save hot cues bottons.
I have a mixer that doesn't have VU meters. Is it possible to install a third party vu meter on each of my mixers outputs, that I would then route to the amp? Thanks!
When mixing with DJMs and using headphones, what do you hear when beatmatching? Do you hear: 1) Both channels at the same time 2)One channel in one ear and the second channel in the other ear 3)One channel in one ear and use the other ear to monitor with the speakers Because my mixer allows me to hear both channels at the same time to see if the beats are in sync. I plan to get a DJM800 next so I want a heads up. Thanks.
I see. So if you are mixing a live set at a gig and you mess up the with the channel knob for volume, and its too loud, the compressor will limit that volume to ensure that it will stay balanced throughout the set regardless of whether its at max for example?
thanks for the video really usefull. but i am one step behind, i am working on the volume use now but not yet the use of EQs, how would you keep the same volume level without using the EQs? I find it really hard, I use the master leds as a reference but still, the volume seems to go up when i do the mix. any help will be greatly appreciated. greetings from Perú!!
decibels is logarithmic, by the way.... i often mix the base from one to another track very extended (sometimes the base of one song with another song without base)... i also mix middle and high in the same way (with f.e. minimal and electro)... this is not applyable with f.e. rock songs...(but who wants to mix rock songs anyway)...but i'm still learning
What happens if you ONLY reduce the bass on the outgoing track as you slowly bring the fader over, while keeping the bass on the incoming record at the 12 O'Clock position through the entire mix??
oh would be cool to have a video on messing around with mid and treble while in the transition and the camera exactly the way it currently is in this video,it's great cause you can see everything :)
kikorski, a compressor will even out the volume, reducing loud parts and increasing quiet parts. Famous brands are DBX and Drawmer, but most audio equipment manufacturers make them, even Kam!
I think phase cancellation has something to do with this too. If you have two of the same sounds, producing the same frequencies, at the same time, they will produce a sort of "hollow" sound, which is phasing.
The thing is this technique has never worked for me. Certain mixers and softwares have diferent sounds with the equalizers, and when I take out the bass in serato itch, it takes th quality away as well as a lot of the melody, not just the bass, from the track, is just sounds awful as if it were a bad quality file.
normalizing doesn't help, as output (in dB) increases when you play 2 tracks at the same time (mixing ;)) As J said, he had the gain controls set in advance (or normalized the tracks. It's like 2 people, talking at the exact same level, sound louder when they talk together. This is also a curse for teachers :D
This is basic stuff, but I VERY OFTEN hear Djs who don't match volumes properly during the mix (without talking about those who don't beatmatch at all... sigh!)
this is not supposed to be a right way to start mixing......you should always BUY MUSIC to get the best quality ever and burn CDs with the minimun speed....so there is no answer to your question.....the only way to avoid to control different loudness is not to download from youtube for example
I’m a beginner. I’ve just about got my beat matching so thought I’d start concentrating on my levels. This has really helped me. Thank you so much 🙌🏻

How do I use the cold cup of coffee in the mix?

can we have an updated version of this please?
Yeah that is a good tip, and i think you should do same thing with highs and make it perfect with adjusting mids.

What does a compressor/limiter do? Have any examples of such equipment (e.g Brand, Make, Model,)? Thanks.

Ellaskins (Johnathan) what the mix/remix of that wideboys "Sambucca" track you've got, its catchy! Is there a site I can download it from?
Thank you for making this video. I think this is the main thing I am having trouble perfecting. But you have been a help in the right direction.

I do think you explained it well, but 8 minutes is a bit long to basically say that you just reduce one bass while increasing the next.
I think, if the bass on the outgoing track is already down a bit before your crossfader has reached the middle, this will work fine :)
@wonderboy008 I would think you would have to warm it up first mate lol

NesCafè Del Mar?
well put
Welp, Im definatly more of a visual learner. I understood what you were saying but I dont think it really sunk in until you demonstrated.
super gig log ,learn sumpin' new every day.Thanx teach
Thanks for the knowledge! Appreciate it
oh, those last kinda DJs u mentioned break my heart! :(
Nice tutorial !
Great tutorial man. I’m assuming the coffee cup is Bluetooth then? 😜

thx a lot
VERY GREAT VIDEO!!!!

Ah, that must be why they've been used in every major recording studio for 50 years.
They don't reduce the quality, they reduce the dynamic range.
cool j.
perfect demonstration ;)
Or you could just buy a compressor/limiter. :-)
This is basic stuff, but I VERY OFTEN hear Djs who don't match volumes properly during the mix (without talking about those who don't beatmatch at all... sigh!)
you can do what killertime said but i actually do not agree with this from the principle
you're right, but there's no need to use such words.
yvesmdjgryphon wow 10 years already
this will reduce the audio quality
A cold cup of coffee is a Dj's basic equip,hm? xD
cold cup of coffee lmao

hahahah wtf
then he wouldn't have time for youtube! :p
