  • Several coal-fired power stations in South Africa are scheduled to close in the next six years - part of its transition to green energy.
    This means further job losses in a country with an already high unemployment rate.
    Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa reports from Komati, South Africa.
    Chris Yelland is managing director at the energy consultancy EE Business Intelligence.

    Many South Africans, like myself, are strongly opposed to carbon emission targets set by the West, whose industrialisation undoubtedly had brought about the bulk of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

    Chris does not understand process engineering. He says Nuclear is not a solution yet South Africa operates the only nuclear power plant in the continent. The only nuclear power plant that provides cheap electricity to Eskom. The only nuclear power plant that employs hundreds of people. It is a baseload and cleanest form of power. Renewables without hydrogen and natural gas won't replace coal fired power station. No intermittent source of energy that can power an aggressive industrial economy.

      @sbuhnt it is quite possible for renewables to support the economy. Agreed, baseload from nuclear needs to be part of the mix, but coal does not.
      Natural gas is an easy solution to shortages because it can be quickly ramped up to full capacity in a shorter time span than coal and nuclear - this allows us to react to peak demand periods.
      Our issue is that renewable power is variable in that it produces a lot of power when you don't need it and not enough when you need it most. This is where natural gas has been filling in. However, the plan to increase energy storage and transmission capacity is exactly what we need to be able to stabilize the variability of renewable energy in that we store energy where there is too much produced and distribute it when there is not enough.

      @@RubiconDota Let me begin where you left off and work my way backwards You said "However, the plan to increase energy storage and transmission capacity is exactly what we need to be able to stabilize the variability of renewable energy in that we store energy where there is too much produced and distribute it when there is not enough" This is an engineering problem not something that we can just close our eyes wish to the stars and see it go away, it isa serious engineering problem Billions of Dollars are going into the research into possible solutions and until now we have no solutions.
      So there is nothing we can do about that. Innovation is never straight forward or in a linear fashion, this might take decades before there is a viable solution, until then we can't use renewables as anything other than added extras.
      At the beginning you say that " base load from nuclear needs to be part of the mix, but coal does not", eery country in the world uses coal, including the lunatics in Europe, so please explain how are you going to be able to achieve what no country in he world has been able to achieve, which is to completely eliminate coal from your energy mix completely. Please explain that to me. Even Scandinavian countries and their professed hatred of coal they too, each and every one of them use coal in some form i their electricity, so how would South Africa achieve what they have not been able to achieve while South Africa currently relies on coal a the more than 70% of its power.

    So Komati was "phased out" while still operable while the country is in a 12 gigawatt shortfall. BECAUSE OF CLIMATE CHANGE!?!?!????? What happened to "just transition" where most of the burden fell on industrialized Western countries!?!?

    Never forget that is is the historical emitters of green house gasses that should be providing the resources and funding to accomplish these transitions. It should not be on the countries that have been looted by years to save the environment. While I am glad to see them doing what they can.

    Green energy will not replace coal-fired power stations. That is just a pipe dream. There is no green energy that is capable of being a base load energy right now.

      Most of Latin America already has most of its electricity coming from hydro power. In some cases 90-100%. Iceland uses Geothermal energy, Denmark uses wind. With more advanced storage capacities coming on line, this becomes less and less of a problem.

    • @SJokes
      @SJokes 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      No one is saying that renewables are fully replacing coal power stations. Coal will definitely still be the base load power source for years to come. The aim is to firstly strengthen the electricity supply in the short term by adding renewables, because like they said in the video to build a new coal or nuclear power station will take at least a decade (for example Kusile started construction in the late 2000s and only recently started commercial operation - but not even all units are firing right now) and secondly to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing coals share of engergy sources from a staggering 80% to at 50% or even lower.
      I dont get why people are so against adding generation capacity to the grid when we so desperately need it? Its not one or the other, you can have both.
      Also, when did the other commentator lie to you? He mentioned specifically that "hydro power" is used in Latin America, Iceland uses geothermal, and that most of Denmark's energy comes from wind - this is a fact. Coal and gas are fine to use for "peaking power which is what countries that are reliant on renewables, such as Denmark, use.

    • @VeeShenge
      @VeeShenge 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      @@SJokes It seems to me that yo have a reading problem. I called this person a liar for saying there are countries in Latin America that have "hydropower" at 90%-100% of their energy mix, that is a bold faced lie. And secondly they lied about intimating that in Denmark renewables are the "base load" energy, you need to have your eyes checked.
      Also, it is very interesting for me as a Chemical Engineer with just under 20 years experience in the energy sector, hearing people talk like you do, it clearly shows me that you have no idea what you are talking about.
      Okay the aim is to strengthen the supply in short term by adding renewables, how exactly are you going to do this in the short terms as there is no current viable storage option available for renewables, in the short terms how exactly are you gonna solve the real engineering problems and scientific challenges facing storage for renewables?
      I'm very up to date with the current trends in energy storage, energy conversion and there is no science based model that can ever present renewables are some "in the mean time" or "in the short term" because you can't possibly store renewables at least not right now with the current technology, so clearly you have no idea what you are talking abut.
      And you speak of Kusile and the long duration of construction around that project, and clearly you do not even understand what the problem was there. And you are also busy conflating nuclear energy with coal based power, you are all over the place.
      I would very surprised if you had any scientific background, you are clearly have n idea what lies north and what lies South.
      Unfortunately for some us we are constrained by the scientific reality that each energy option present, and the engineering problem that each present we do not have the luxury to of fanciful speech based on day dreams.

      @blessingmabasa9996 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A lot. Energy demands fluctuate on a minute-to-minute basis; therefore you need incredible flexibility in the supply. You need to be able to ramp up or down the supply at a moment's notice. Even if we were to have better storage methods, due to the intermittency of "sun" and "wind" availability, you lose a lot of control over the process.
