Mariah writes like 99% of her songs (except for covers, of course). For me "The Roof" is her masterpiece, as well the album it came from (Butterfly). The album came out when she was getting off her abusive marriage with Sony CEO (it is, her boss) Tommy Motolla and it's deeply personal and it shows.
The genius use of the sample, the vocals and a great use of layering, the whole dreamy vibe of the song and, of course, the lyrics...
"My aprehension blew away, I only wanted you to taste my sadness as you kissed me in the dark"
Unfortunally the song wasn't a sucess because, IIRC, Sony didn't send it to the radio. Fortunally it's still the overall fan favorite, as well as Mariah's.
Thank you for paying atention to her lyrics. People need to remind that she's the solo artist with most #1 songs of all time. 19 as a whole, 18 as a songwriter and 15 as producer

This is one of Mariah’s best songs she’s written, she has written countless masterpieces but she wrote this whilst driving in the rain while shook ones pt2 was playing, she pulled over to write along to the track. One of my favourite parts is the intro where her humming is like crying and also when she says “and started listening to my longing heart”. This song was about the end of her abusive marriage at a young age where she finally was in love with someone but unsure if it was ok to be happy during the end of her marriage and the brink of a divorce. It also shows the mental state she wasn’t sure of stepping out of, of being a victim of abuse. Seeing freedom but scared of the consequences for going against her abusers will.

@@diva1675 it's definitely about Derek and the lyrics relate more to this too. She wrote two songs the Roof and My All about Derek.
Mariah writes all of her songs except for the covers she does of other artist. Her pen game is unmatched.

She is going to be officially inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame this June. She really is so talented...she sings, writes, produces, and I think she can even make beats.

“The Roof” is definitely one of Mariah’s best songs! This era was so iconic for her. She really was leaning more into her Hip Hop influences and just went nuts with her lyrics!! The storytelling on this album is unparalleled!! Mariah is a fucking genius!! She wrote every word!!

This is Mariah's favorite song off of Butterfly, her favorite album of hers, so it's safe to say this is definitely one of Mariah's favorite songs of her ever.
She was always a great writer, but this song is when she started to prove herself to be a really vivid one.

But The Roof was an underrated single. The people probably's expecting more pop songs from her
The Roof & Breakdown never even got a proper chance coz they had a VERY limited release... we dont even know if it wouldve have been a hit record or not like Always Be My Baby which was an R&B record
@@Mariahidol it had proper release they were not pop songs that's the problem and didn't get the huge backing on promotion like the other singes . breakdown and the roof was for the urban r&b and hip hop charts and it did great .
@@markmenez4097 Both songs only got a very limited released in the US and released in certain international markets. Neither of those songs did as well as they could've if they were released officially like her other songs Honey and My All.

Pretty cool to see younger gen discovering MC’s deep cuts over 20 years after she recorded them. Tracks like The Roof, Breakdown, Everything Fades Away, Looking In and Outside are so timeless IMO. While they’ll never be considered her hits, to me they’re a true representation of her skill and legacy as a musician and lyricist. Glad you’re discovering some of the ‘real’ Mariah

This song was so ahead of it's time. It's a shame it never got the recognition it deserved. This is a story of her reminiscing a past love and a night they shared together on a rainy roof-top. People don't realize how talented she is. She writes all her music (besides the one where she covers a song), and produces a big majority of them too. People don't realize her talent, they just see her as crazy vocalist with huge range. But she writes and produces hits! 19, #1 hits. The most #1 singles out of any solo artist in music history.
Underrated song. This is a piece of art from lyrics to melody. The video is super cool and has a timeless beat to it. To sing this song is harder than you think. You can run outta air easily because of the phrasing and register she uses
The 3rd rapper was Big Noyd...he's Mobb "affliated". PS: Mariah just came out with her memoir in which she says this song was inspired by her relationship with Derek Jeter from NY Yankees. They escaped to the rooftop of her apt and had a bottle of Moet (as mentioned in the song). She's an INCREDIBLE songwriter

My favorite song from her. Fun Fact: The music video is for the remix of the song. The album version is her alone. There was a video for the original version too on VH1.com years ago but it's gone. Also, Mariah and Kelly Price sing the background vocals, Kelly used to be Mariah's background vocalist.

It’s not often you have somebody in their teens noticing the lyrical genius/ producing of Mariah Carey. When I was a teen is when I really paid attention to the music N went back n listened to her now In my 20s I’m still a big fan of hers and It seems you really LISTEN to the music. I like the videos you post you really point out important elements of the music-many which of why fans of Hers really love the music she puts out. In my opinion she is very underrated. And people don’t realize unless it’s a cover she is singing ..she wrote the song and more often than not produced it as well. Props to you.
