  • The Subterraneans' is a 1958 novella by Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac. It is a semi-fictional account of his short romance with Alene Lee (1931-1991), an African-American woman, in Greenwich Village, New York. Kerouac met Alene in the late summer of 1953 when she was typing up the manuscripts of William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, in Allen's Lower East Side apartment. In the novella, Kerouac moved the story to San Francisco and renamed Alene Lee "Mardou Fox". She is described as a carefree spirit who frequents the jazz clubs and bars of the budding Beat scene of San Francisco. Other well-known personalities and friends from the author's life also appear thinly disguised in the novel. The character Frank Carmody is based on William S. Burroughs, and Adam Moorad on Allen Ginsberg. Even Gore Vidal appears as successful novelist Arial Lavalina. Kerouac's alter ego is named Leo Percepied, and his long-time rival Neal Cassady is mentioned only in passing as Leroy.

He reads it as it comes across on the page when I read his writing. Quick. Fast paced. Action. Visual.

Me too. It's always a treat to hear a writer read his own work.

I honestly never used to understand his writing style when I first discovered his work. Found it very difficult to keep up with. But now having heard it read aloud, I 100% get it and appreciate the hell out of it

I absolutely LOVE your comment. Kerouac is not easy to read, but Kerouac read by Kerouac... so great!

Jack Kerouac once wrote a poem dedicated to the Unborn. He knew he had limited time on earth and reached out to future generations.
    I was amazed by this.
I took It as his appreciation of life and his acceptance of death. Or his own mortality.
I never heard of someone writing a poem to the Unborn. It was a gesture only an Artist would do or in his case a writer. It was in the preface of one of his books.

I first read biography of Kerouac in winter 1984 then read On The Road. He had a powerful ability as a writer to bring his real life characters to LIFE, to convey personality. Dean Moriarty became elevated, very human, desperate, intense, both sad and joyous.

Agreed. But also a little annoying by the later parts of the book. I was tired of his antics, but Sal wasn’t.

Beautiful. Natural, unaltered, still current. Thank you for reminding me of the wonderful writing styles and content that’s sadly missing in 2020. More please, if possible. Thank you.

I just started this book, and to be honest I only got 5 pages in. I had to drop it. The sentences are everlasting and it's a pain to read. So i decided to find a review to see if its worth reading, instead I found this. I get it now. Maybe I'll find an audiobook if there is one. Great video!

It's so sad that all of the people in these photos were probably born in the 1920s and are dead now and have passed into dust.

I recommend Kerouac fans read Joyce Johnson's memoir Minor Characters for an interesting and intimate portrait of this generation, from someone who was in the very midst of it, but on the sidelines.
