Renault are to be commended for giving us a manual version... many other manufacturers are failing to provide a manual option (supposedly due to emissions?) big mistake..

Tish, a great review as always. Its refreshing to see a review of a car if you are on a budget, not all the singing and dancing cars.

Thanks. I've been waiting for someone to do a UK review of the 1.0 manual!

Yep, just like you said, the main reasons for TCe 90 manual alpine version of this Clio are: price, storage space, safety, features. You can pay extra for an autopark feature, only available for Esprit Alpine version. We've had it since March, two kids (3,5) at the back, done 10.000 km so far, excellent car. We've even added 380-litre official accessory roof box. The Clio has already autobraked on me at about 3 occasions after unexpected sudden braking from the car in front. I think I would've made it anyway, but it's great to know that you've got extra support. It' intuitive, holds steady in corners even at highway speeds. For maximum safety, switch on the adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Very helpful for long drives.

The new ones come with Overspeed Prevention, I wonder how it works and can you turn it off? what if I'm overtaking? I have yet to find someone tested it.

With an entry model Clio being around £18,000, that still makes it £4,000 more expensive than the entry level Dacia Sandero, which uses the same engine, has the same dimensions, and even the same styling ques, and is a very close relative to the MK5 Clio. I believe the residuals on the Sandero are also better. So, is the extra money for the Clio worth it?

We just rent the Clio Techno TCe 90, 6 speed gearbox, 1.0 liter displacement. A few days before rent the Opel Corsa GS line with an Mild Hybrid option with the 100 hp engine. Following was observed:
    - drivetrain, despite the Corsa feels much more powerful, the hybrid retarter application was done not well, it comes late in at deceleration fuel cut off (around 2 s) and then quite feelable. Fuel consumption was around 6.4 liters in our mountainous area. The Clio drivetrain is enough powerful to get from A to B and to overtake in a safe duration on land streets. Consumption was around 6.0 liters in the same area. Both shifters are easy, maybe a bit under defined for both.
    - suspension, Corsa understeering was quite huge compared to the VW Polo (6R, 1.6 TDI, BMT, -10 mm ride height), its +150 kg, compared with the Polo, of weight might one of the reasons, surely not the only one. Didn't convince me. The turn in capacity of the Clio is a bit better, feels controlable, and way more softer in damping, the 40 km/h street bumpers in the Corsa were a bit of more drama, but still acceptable.
Overall my VW Polo is still the one who has a solid drivetrain, defined shifting and turn in capacity, way higher MPG (55-72, or 4,3-3,3 l/100 km). If the decision was between the Clio and the Corsa, its the Clio.
