The strange thing is many of Mattel’s people, including “toy guru” Scott Neilich (Spector Creative on TH-cam), swear that there was nothing done to the toy to make it stink. So whatever smell was there was not intentional. While giving an olfactory component to a toy was not unheard of (Strewberry Shortcake) the toy makers were generally bright enough not to sell something that parents would immediately toss in a dumpster for smelling like roadkill. (The first generation Creepy Crawlies had taught them important lessons about toys that smell like roadkill.)
I always had a thing for Evil-Lyn. One of my favorite episodes was the one where her powers were taken away and she and Teela were stranded in the desert.
@@JasonTodd971 It was never a retcon, it was in the original pitch that he was Randor (He-man father) half brother; just the cartoon chosen to not really explore the general background of the characters except a couple of exception like Orko and Teela being Sorceress daughter (an amnesiac Fisto was meant to be the father)

The original concept was that Hordak was a sorcerer. That’s how his original action figure was presented. But Filmation changed that when they used him as the main villain for She-Ra.
These characters are so much fun! I'm so glad to have re-discovered them thanks to the Origins figures that look almost identical to the vintage figures (to me, anyway) and are much more poseable. Loved your list and discussion of each character - well done.
As a kid I used to have a lot of these toys. I had Stinkor but not Merman, and I just realized, the original toys from the 80's were both the same model, just painted different.
It was pretty smart of them, they did that with a few more obscure characters too, like Sweet Bee from Etheria being retconned into being a form of Andreenid, like Buzz-Off (Albeit a much more human looking one, without clawed hands or insectile eyes.)

King Hiss breaks the verisimilitude of the wacky universe for me. He wasn't the work of creatives following the vein of a story - he was the work of Mattel toy executives demanding new characters to replace old ones, like the second generation of Transformers introduced in the Transformers movie,
The masters of the universe movie was amazing. Seriously watch it again. It probably should have been two movies with the amount of stuff they crammed in there. I love it from start to finish.
Trap jaw story in comics is pretty terrifying. When he revolted against skeletor the battle was intense and he lost He is left with his limbs chopped and lower jaw removed, barely alive, his torso ia given to triclops by skeletor who turned him into the cyborg with robotic limbs and jaw
Actually he's from neither of those. He's from Horde World. He INVADED and took over Etheria, which is where his base of operations is - interesting fact - he can't go home until he conquers Eternia as that was the original mission Horde Prime gave him.
In the German radio play, some villains had a much more complex backstory: Beastman (who is portrait as extreme simple minded) used to be a smart scientist, and TrapJaw lost his arm (and jaw) while saving a child that would have been crushed by a tank driven by Skeletor - who destroyed their lives and turnt them into minions. MerMan, in the other hand, had ambitions on his own. He tried not only to defeat He-Man, but also to overthrow Skeletor by submerging the whole planet. Guess that was not translated, but original content? In any case, they did a fantastic job - I consider the radio play to be better than the TV series.

Tri-Klops was originally meant to be Heroic Warrior, but he wound up with Evil Warriors in the end. Likewise, Stratos was originally meant to be Evil Warrior, but he was switched to Heroic Warrior.
Stinkor couldn't stand his own smell because he didn't have those powers originally. The chemicals that mutated him didn't grant him immunity either, since that wasn't what they were intended to do.
When the MOTU toyline first hit in 1982, I though Zodac was an evil warrior. The card backs didn't initially tell you who was good or bad. I mostly figured it out from the minicomics and toy commercials.

Faker wasn’t blue in the 80s cartoon. I think all the scenes they used here are from James Eatock’s fan film “Return of Faker” from a few years ago that he wasn’t allowed to release.
Speaking of Faker, that is also influential for the Transformers to create an Evil version of Optimus Prime, named Nemesis Prime, Just like the Star Trek Mirror Universe characters as you mentioned. As far as my favorite villains go, Mine are as always Skeletor and Evil-Lyn.

The strange thing is many of Mattel’s people, including “toy guru” Scott Neilich (Spector Creative on TH-cam), swear that there was nothing done to the toy to make it stink. So whatever smell was there was not intentional. While giving an olfactory component to a toy was not unheard of (Strewberry Shortcake) the toy makers were generally bright enough not to sell something that parents would immediately toss in a dumpster for smelling like roadkill. (The first generation Creepy Crawlies had taught them important lessons about toys that smell like roadkill.)

The original concept was that Hordak was a sorcerer. That’s how his original action figure was presented. But Filmation changed that when they used him as the main villain for She-Ra.
These characters are so much fun! I'm so glad to have re-discovered them thanks to the Origins figures that look almost identical to the vintage figures (to me, anyway) and are much more poseable. Loved your list and discussion of each character - well done.

As a kid I used to have a lot of these toys. I had Stinkor but not Merman, and I just realized, the original toys from the 80's were both the same model, just painted different.
I loved that they made Trap Jaw and Skeletor the same race in one of the comics.
Well Skeletor is only half Gar. He's also half human in those stories as he was King Randor's half brother.
It was pretty smart of them, they did that with a few more obscure characters too, like Sweet Bee from Etheria being retconned into being a form of Andreenid, like Buzz-Off (Albeit a much more human looking one, without clawed hands or insectile eyes.)

King Hiss breaks the verisimilitude of the wacky universe for me. He wasn't the work of creatives following the vein of a story - he was the work of Mattel toy executives demanding new characters to replace old ones, like the second generation of Transformers introduced in the Transformers movie,

Actually he's from neither of those. He's from Horde World. He INVADED and took over Etheria, which is where his base of operations is - interesting fact - he can't go home until he conquers Eternia as that was the original mission Horde Prime gave him.

In the German radio play, some villains had a much more complex backstory: Beastman (who is portrait as extreme simple minded) used to be a smart scientist, and TrapJaw lost his arm (and jaw) while saving a child that would have been crushed by a tank driven by Skeletor - who destroyed their lives and turnt them into minions.
MerMan, in the other hand, had ambitions on his own. He tried not only to defeat He-Man, but also to overthrow Skeletor by submerging the whole planet.
Guess that was not translated, but original content? In any case, they did a fantastic job - I consider the radio play to be better than the TV series.

Tri-Klops was originally meant to be Heroic Warrior, but he wound up with Evil Warriors in the end. Likewise, Stratos was originally meant to be Evil Warrior, but he was switched to Heroic Warrior.
Stinkor couldn't stand his own smell because he didn't have those powers originally. The chemicals that mutated him didn't grant him immunity either, since that wasn't what they were intended to do.
