I was starting to think that you never had weeds either! It's nice to know that you are normal! ;) Love your videos by the way. I have learned a lot from you. I planted my first southern garden this year, and growing up in the north there was alot that I had to learn. Thank you!
Web cajun, thanks again for the awesome video. My garden here is going good at three acres. Going to buy one of these cultivators for next season corn crop. I'm nervous about it because of the work i'm adding but my wife says we need it at the market. You were one of my first inspirations years ago.
+joe hanna A good set of cultivators will do the job in no time. Only need to run the sweeps a couple of inches deep and it'll take out roots and all.....Donald
Just picked up a cultivator. Very similar to yours. I’m going to take out the 2 Center ones. Just like you did. I’ve got 1200 watermelon plants that are just coming up.
great videos, one thing I noticed is you let the lift way down on your tractor to plow the weeds, if you'll just get the sweeps below the surface it'll actually do a better job. Jim
love the garden, I only have a 20X40 plot and last summer I had in only two rows about 80-100 bell pepper plants. I plants wide per row and it seems to keep the weeds out really well. in the rows. in the paths I have to do alot of weeding.
Hello again webC, Nice Labrador BTW. We have a 3yr old Newfoundland, wish I could use him for plowing. Can't actually let him in the garden, he ploughs through everything. Our garden is 3,500 sq feet. The weeds are unreal. I estimate that I remove 500 Lbs (by hand) each season. I use powered seaweed to fertilize and I guess the weeds love it more than the crop. We don't use any chemicals in the patch, preferring an organic route. But man, it a full time job. Your soil looks like P.E. Island
Your welcome and good luck with your garden. I try to always start off with a clean area to plant in and try to keep it that way. I do find that the hotter it gets down here in Louisiana the less that hoe gets used.
Oh Webcajun, am I glad to have found you!!!! I just bought a fully equipped farm here in Mississippi..... The last time I fooled with a garden I was a kid.... well, I planted this big garden and I'm drowning in weeds, thanks to all the rain we've had. I've got this exact piece of equipment and didn't know how to use it..... I've been out there pulling and hoeing and killing myself trying to get the weeds out.... they are growing faster than I can keep up.... got a bad back.... I'm going, as soon as daylight comes, to adjust mine like you did. I can't wait to try it out!!!!! Thanks a million!!! Do you have any more videos on how to use farm equipment????? Don't want to break any of this expensive stuff I bought.... been scared to use it until I know how. Or a video on how to change the oil or hydrolic fluid on a tractor??? Or how to tune one up???
jessica kiefer First thing is stay out the garden with that tractor when it's wet. Since 2007 I've done quite a few videos on using the equipment behind a tractor. Check out the list of videos and you'll fine em......Donald
Webcajun, great looking garden! My wife and I are putting in a larger garden this season, one I can employ the use of my garden tractor and attachments in! So needless to say I am new to gardening with the use of tractors. Your video is very helpful! Mike
Hey Mike, glad you enjoy the videos and find them helpful. Stick to the basics, don’t fall for all the gimmicks out there and you’ll do just fine in that new garden…..Donald
You and I think alike when it comes to doing things the easy way if possible. I know about using a hoe to clean out grass and it wasn't fun and wished we was growing a garden as a teen with my grandfather. Getting a cultivator is my next purchase after seeing how important it is to keeping the garden taken care of.
+webcajun That is the next item I will purchase since I have a nice tiller and a plow which is somewhere in the Little Rock area (waiting for it to be delivered). The cultivator is next on my list of things to get then I am off gardening.
@DesertDigger1 … Justin Wilson did have a great show that I watched all the time. I’m just a simply country boy, no TV appearances for me. Glad you enjoy the videos……Donald
Your a hoot Donald..The vids are great, keep em coming..You should be invited on The Jay Leno show..or even RFD-TV You definitely deserve more recodnition.I.m sure the good people in Louisiana love you..Your a modern day Justin Wilson, only out of the kitchen and in the garden...But it takes a good garden to create a good kitchen.
Donald....I just bought a cgp6 package 6 cultivator, hillers, and potatoe plow from Steven's. Haven't used them yet but they seem to be great quality. My question is you used spring caulitivators in this video. Any reason one instead of the other.....shanks vs springs.....Atua, South Florida.
Gotta admire a man who is honest. I could carry those out of there but I'm just to darn lazy LOL. amen brother I feel the same way! That's why we buy expensive toys so we can work less :) Johnny Buck Creek, Ky
Great video! I'm sure it works for furrows and rows. For smaller plots, you may want to try the Turbo Weed Twister made by Ergonica. Or, after running your cultivator, when the sun is low, clean up the remaining weeds with this quick and powerful tool. Quicker than a hoe with brains.
@fatturdburger ... The main reason mine were so big was the length of time they stayed in the ground. I really should have harvest them a couple of months before but we were getting so much rain I couldn't get in there.......... Donald
My Dearborn field cultivator/chisel plow is similar to this. Basically assembled on an angle iron frame instead of a toolbar. It has 3 tines per side and I can also adjust the height. Do you leave the sway chains/bar on the tractor tight or loose? Thanks
Guess the larger the garden the harder it would be to be organic, for sure. My only issue with it is the weeds. We try to grow as much as we can in the space so there's not much room between the rows, can't use the tiller to chew weeds, so; hoe..hoe..hoe. Seaweed is our main fertilizer and it's effect is almost miraculous. I've been told you can grow spuds in beach sand using just kelp(seaW) and nothing else and I believe it. Your fields look awesome thanks for the time you devote to this "need"
It saves both time and work, worth every penny. Your equipment does have to be standard Cat. 1 for it to work. I had to move some hitch pins around to make all my equipment standard…..Donald
We'll be looking for 'em. And, that is a beautiful piece of ground you've got down there. Much more suitable to farming/gardening than here in NE Washington State.

My hats off to anyone who can grow a large garden totally organic. I couldn't do it, that's for sure......... Donald

I too have heard that sea weed is an excellent way to fertilize the garden. Thanks ........ Donald
Each time I use them I learn a little more. Did you watch the last video I made about the oinons? I think they did a much better job....... Donald
The size of the garden has a lot to do with how you do things. They are so many ways of doing it I don't think there's a wrong way........ Donald

I never walked behind a mule, wish I had just for the experience. Probably make me appreciate that tractor that much more........ Donald
Love this video! You made me laugh! i always have to do hand-weedin... Always lookin forward to your videos! Hope you are doing great! melissa

You want the chains snug so you don’t take out too many little plants. :-) …..Donald
nice red dirt.. we dont have that up here in the north. great videos . always enjoy watching and learing
+Jim Edwards Thank you Jim, glad you enjoy the videos.....Donald
Springs are more forgiving if you hit something or run em too deep. You do need to be more careful with solid shanks…..Donald
@fatturdburger ... is that the way you grow your garden? Would be interesting to see......... Donald
you look like hoss cartright....I liked hoss alot
It's not always this easy Melissa.
I like your style. Is your cultivator called a "Ford" cultivator ?
It’s possible but I’ve never heard them called that…..Donald
Guess the larger the garden the harder it would be to be organic, for sure. My only issue with it is the weeds. I did not take offense to your suggestion it just with a garden this size mulching is not an option…..Donald
how about that quick hitch on your tractor ? does it work ?I am thinking about getting one ,i hate changing out attachments by myself.
It saves both time and work, worth every penny. Your equipment does have to be standard Cat. 1 for it to work. I had to move some hitch pins around to make all my equipment standard…..Donald
Thanks i ordered one,
did you send him one?
You da man. Thanks, buddy.
+Tom Primeau You're welcome.....Donald
In my case cultivation is the quickest and easiest way to keep the weeds out. Guess I’m just stuck in the old ways……Donald
Donald,
Are you still making videos?
Sure am, just not quit as often.....Donald
We'll be looking for 'em. And, that is a beautiful piece of ground you've got down there. Much more suitable to farming/gardening than here in NE Washington State.
Thanx
Donald! What is that on your tractor? If you stop the video at 2:55 it looks like a grey dog head or something. Solve the mystery!
Wade
Wade Brinson That’s a plastic bag covering the hydraulic connections for the front end loader. :-) ……Donald
wow, he has a warp tractor
@fatturdburger ... just watched it, nice job.......... Donald
Time for a "High Crop" tractor Donald.
What is your row spacing ?
The rows are spaced 48 inches apart. Same width as the rear wheels on the tractor.....Donald
Thank you. For the response.
