It is great to see that Suki, who loves Shiro dearly (we see them cuddling in many videos) - is, when Shiro is growling, really protective of the pups. She shows Shiro her teeth and is very tense, watching his moves if she has to intervene when one of the pups gets too close to him. So both do their jobs - Dad shows, that he is not ready for cuddling yet and Mom protects her kids.

They're dogs not wolves. They behave different then wolves if anything dogs raised by humans are immature and especially males shouldn't be trusted too much with puppies. In the wild they learn all of this boundaries lessons when feeding occurs and the pecking order is established.

Because it's a dog. You'll be crazy to think they harbor the same fatherly feelings like humans. Nope. The fact is he doesn't recognise or acknowledge them and to him, they're outsiders and he's displaying natural territorial behavior. The owner is trying to get him to accept the pups but that's unnatural and unexpected behavior for the dog.
@@yoginc There's nothing natural about dogs - they're human-bred animals. Male wolves are naturally very protective of their litter. When it comes to dogs, it just depends entirely on the individual - enjoying their pups' company from the get-go, learning to enjoy it over time, or never being able to get along with them. None of these options are inherently natural or unnatural, just completely dependent on the dog's experiences and personality.

I love watching dog societies unfold naturally, whether it be a family of dogs or an unrelated "pack" and just observing what they do, with as little human intervention as possible. Just letting them do what they want, watching how they raise the pups, teach them things, figure out who their friends are, who to give respect to and when, how they interact with each other, all these things are just so interesting for me personally to watch unfold with any group of dogs. It is worth mentioning though that almost always, a dog mother or father will not hurt the babies. What looks bad to us humans is really normal to them, its just the way they communicate, usually the equivalent of a human parent scolding their child, nothing to worry about really, and that is exactly what is happening here. Notice how the couple work it out, the Father Shiro and Suki the mother are like arguing with each other, like Shiro is disciplining the pups and telling them its his time to eat while Suki is being the protective mother telling Shiro to leave them alone, supporting their bad behaviors in a way. Love it, if we left our biases alone (and frankly not get mad about something like this as some of you do, which is silly), we could see how insanely alike their family structures can be to our own.

So seeing some of you in the comments talking about how Shiro was being "too aggressive" and shame on the owner for keeping him around the puppies, you obviously don't understand dogs.
There are many things humans can't teach dogs that their parents must do. We don't speak their language. Adult dogs teach their young to respect other dogs and their territory. It's vital they have this lesson for the future.
This is an extreme example but many behavioral problems can occur if pups aren't partially raised (with the help of the breeder/owner) by their parents.
There was an episode of Dog Whisperer I watched and there was this very nervous female who was still very young but not small enough to be a puppy anymore.
Cesar suspected it was because she was taken away from her parents too early so she never got the feeling of being held by the scruff and was never taught how to behave like a dog.
This made her incredibly anxious. Cesar proceeded to bring her to his pack of dogs for therapy and it did wonders.
She learned how to act like a dog from the pack.
Shiro is a vital part of teaching these pups how to behave around other dogs. It may LOOK rather aggressive to those who don't know dog behaviour but he wasn't going to attack them.
If you thought this was rough, go watch videos of LION fathers teaching their young.
They tend to get rather rough with their cubs.
Always remember that dogs aren't humans. They are domesticated animals that still have the instincts from their ancestors within them.
Plus, from what I've heard, Shiba Inu's are known to be a territorial breed so it's best not to overthink it.
He's teaching them how to be like a Shiba Inu.
Keep note that Suki is not some useless bystander either. She is a mother. If Shiro WERE to try anything, she would take complete control of the situation and put him in his place.

They need to be educated on dogs instincts, remember dogs were domesticated to kill and hunt. In modern society they are thought as weaklings who can’t fend for themselves.....
His dogs, his choice, he thought he had to intervene because he was worried. Cant fault him for doing what he thought was right when he was worried. I think its not that Shiro prefer female pups, it has to do with the territory. Male dogs are much territorial than female dogs. Having 3 male potats means Shiro has to share the territory.
Few years ago, my mom dog had 2 female pups and 1 male pup. The father dog is tamer with the 2 female pups, while he's a bit hostile with the male pup.

Hello! Very interesting video, if I may I'd like to give you my professional opinion. I am a dog behavior therapist, and while keeping the father as well as the mother around is extremely good for the puppies, there are quite a few issues I see in Shiro's behavior that are troubling. His being aggressive is not territorial, rather it comes from possession: this is MY bowl with MY food and you are not to touch it.
In an adequate degree, this kind of behavior is very positive for the puppies, it teaches them to respect another dog's 'no', but in his case is way too exaggerated. The puppies are clearly still very young, and at this age they are not a threat in regards to status in the pack, quite the opposite in fact, no matter their gender.
If you want to acclimate Shiro to the babies and make sure that Suki doesn't tear him a new one I would suggest avoiding things that cause concerns over possession such as food. I would instead suggest testing water, which shouldn't be as much of a problem, or start from an activity that Shiro finds relaxing and enjoyable, something that doesn't rile him up.
Once he's more comfortable around the puppies you can try again with food, but you will need to be careful: take note of the distance at which point the dad starts to exhibit his behavior and keep the puppies slightly behind that invisible line, so you don't trigger his aggression; once he's used to it you can start easing them closer.
It's a very delicate process and it needs caution to avoid the babies or the parents getting hurt (I guarantee you Suki would destroy the daddy if something was to happen to her litter), it might take some time but this is my suggestion to you.

@@DrBonQuiQui I absolutely agree. Being in this profession I find a lot of videos depicting 'cute' aggression hard to watch and bone chilling. I guarantee you, most uploaders who ignore or laugh at comments like mine under their videos sooner or later end up calling one of us, to fix the problem they created when it gets out of hand.

@TheSearchingTruth While some breeds can be pinned as more 'aggressive' to society, it ultimately depends on how the owners raise and discipline their dog accordingly. Some breeds are classified as more independent than others (German shepherd is a prime example!) which can result in some unwanted behaviors, if not corrected in their own terms of what is 'right'. :)

The one thing I always say to my clients is that aggression is not the problem, but a symptom in 99% of the cases; there are quite a few possible behavior causes, that range from simply fixing the family's "hierarchy" to tackling traumas the dog has gone through in its life. Very, very rarely it's an actual psychiatry problem, but it's possible too.
What is tied to breeds is tendencies: for example, Akita Inos, made very popular by the movie hachiko, are not all fun and games; they are headstrong and stubborn, and need to be managed with extreme care to avoid problems, both behavior and physical wise.
Or a bull terrier? They tend to be amazing with children and people, but some can be aggressive too depending on their upbringing and treatment.
Or just look at what I call the "small dog plague": I see so many people with small animals that hysterically bark at anything and anybody, constantly choke themselves pulling on the leash, always seeming aggressive. This is caused by the toxic "it's small, it won't hurt anybody I can manage it" line of thought: these dogs are often not trained at all simply because they can be yanked back with a pull of the leash. The result? Frustrated, hysterical dog.
I'm sorry once I start talking about this I go off on a tangent there's so much more I'd say about the small dogs plague. At least it's educational, I hope?
All the above is to explain to you that the Shiba that growled at you is not an indicator for the breed, just for the dog itself: it could've been annoyed at you because in his eyes you "stepped out of line" as much as it could've been terrified out of his wits and chose fight instead of flight.
In his mind he might not have had a choice.
Dogs, just like us, are not black and white. They are complex animals with specific requirements for a healthy and balanced growth, which results in a healthy and balanced dog that is capable of interacting with its species as well as others for the rest of its life.
I'm gonna stop here before I go off on a whole other tangent, I hope I didn't bore you to death!

It’s less food aggression and more that he is establishing himself as an alpha while the pups are young.
Dogs have a right to be left alone with their food tho. If they aren't, growling is the way to say "Hey, this is my food, don't take it from me. Please leave me alone". If the food is touched by anybody it's just going to growl more. If the growling is fixed away, next option for the dog is biting without warning.
Dogs have their ways to communicate and puppies should learn how to understand and respect them. Same for humans
