@@OverdevestNurseries I agree! I have used this video as a guide to prune my roses. Is it okay to cut off the older canes that not producing any more buds on the bottom? They are like you mentioned, straggly and leggy.
I've learned more about pruning in just 2 of your videos than I have in years. I think partly because you explain WHY you do certain things. Like the part about where the stem may be fleshy inside but by pruning closer to an outward growing bud will help it heal over on it's own. And allowing air to the middle of the plant. Hello, great informative video! What fertilizer brand are you using? is it only for rose bushes or is it compatible with other flowering plants? thank you!
I use a general, well-balanced fertilizer, that is available as a "slow release" formulation, that slowly feeds the plants over an extended period. I like this because it is safer (avoids over feeding) and I only have to apply it once. There are several dedicated rose fertilizers that are perfectly fine, but a general one means I can use it for most of our plants - except ericaceous (acid loving) ones like Rhododendrons, Azaleas etc. They usually have experts on hand at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that can guide you to choose the most suitable kinds for your area. 💚👍😉
I have a tall one that uses a trellis and driftwood to hold up - I trim it and cut off dead looking wood then I get lots of green no roses and tons of new stalks. I’m afraid I take off too much
David says he doesn't think that is the problem, it is more likely the variety (some are more free flowering than others) and it maybe that you need to modify your training method. Here's a link to one of our other videos (How to Train Climbing Roses // Easy Way To Get MORE FLOWERS & Display Them From Top to Bottom👍😁🌹👏) that will explain more and perhaps help you get better results: th-cam.com/video/-HExhGtRrRY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8H7qM4vDBCz1CxRA Then you might like to take a little time and scroll through our other videos and find out about the performing varieties we have tested and trialed. As you let him out of the "dog house" 😮💨just be aware that your rose will most likely grow back strongly, and be even more vigorous and probably, eventually flower with profusion😉. It will take a little longer for the new growth to grow back out, and you might be wise to put a ring of chicken wire (or some other sort of protection) around the new soft shoots until they get established but eventually, I expect it will re-establish and be fine.
