Well they said they’re addressing a complaint received from one neighbor but it doesn’t acknowledge or deny the existence of other complaints. Yes and there's no way they didn't know how loud it was going to be. There are things they could have done like direct the noise upward and away from buildings or use liquid cooling instead. There's a reason why chunky heatsinks are the norm in computers not just fans.
They could potentially even install equipment to scavenge some of the spare heat for other purposes.

Sloppy engineering by EA. Looking at the size of that charging station, they probably need to dissipate ~100-200kw of heat if all chargers are running, which is quite a bit, but not insane. I suspect someone designed this station with a simple on/off thermostat and blower motor that runs at full tilt any time the chargers are running instead of a more appropriate variable motor and temperature controller. That one change will probably cost them an extra couple thousand dollars but it’ll be well worth it once the noise complaint judgements start rolling in.

    • @RandomPerson-op1bq

2000kw of power max assuming 10 slots are occupied using full power. I also think the fan is on max power but they could have used more space to spread out the cooling and/or slow down charging to say 100kw (still very fast) to decrease temperature load

    • @johnpchang
      @johnpchang 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@@RandomPerson-op1bq yeah, I was assuming about 2MW of charge capacity and about 95% conversion efficiency, plus thermal losses from running active cooling cables and wiggle room for other inefficiencies is where I got the 100-200kw of thermal waste energy they have to dump.
I agree, the immediate fix should be to throttle the fan (or replace the motor if necessary ) to run at a max speed that’s within noise ordinances, and whatever the chargers can manage within that will be the site max for now.
Most of these chargers have been going into strip mall and big box store parking lots, where noise isn’t as big of a deal. As they move into more urban environments like this, they’re going to have to get a bit more sophisticated about their waste heat handling. There’s no reason or excuse for even a charging facility of this size to be making this much noise in a residential neighborhood.

True. As an Architect who works with MEP and Acoustic Consultants it is standard practice for a legit engineer to do sound calculations, provide installation details to meet project targets, and ensure all equipment parts are in correct working order before signing off on project completion. Sometimes it’s a loose belt or blade, and done. Other times it’s vibration isolators, baffles, or alternate manufacturers. This is negligence on the part of the City, Owner, and Design-Build professionals involved. Get on it now while the GC is still under warranty.

I think that talk is a bit limited in the face of such a definitive statement such as your comment.
Given that fossil fuels will be phased out, what alternative to EVs do you think will be the future?
I'll admit that my comment was also a definitive statement, but it is grounded on observable facts, exigent requirements, and financial pressures.

Basically nothing you just said is true. Fossil fuels are not going to be phased out, fossil fuel powered cars aren’t going to be phased out, and many folks are finally starting to admit the truth on those two things. Even some of the biggest manufacturers are backtracking on their wild EV plans, because everybody with a brain who looks at the BIG picture knows how utterly unrealistic it is to think EVs will take over the market. The only people left who actually believe EVs are the future are the same folks who foolishly believe that human-caused “climate change” is a thing. Hint: it’s not. The climate changes, yes.. but we have no meaningful control over it, and EVs sure as hell aren’t the solution.

@@PTANV-x2g It's been almost 14 years and they're still running this line about EVs being the future. It's getting old.

This is what happens when you're hellbent on trying to get everyone to drive those crappy EVs. Too many people in government get big bucks from lobbyists to care about noise

No, it's not, this is what happens when the planning department isn't given enough information about the project design. We're going electric whether you like it or not, the question is how much oil there is left in the ground and not in the air when that happens. Better radiators and more efficient fans would have avoided the issue.

Have them change the fan ; they can make silent submarines, replacing an obnoxious air mover isn't rocket science or cost prohibitive.

    EV's are the future.
    According to who, exactly?
Most manufacturers got out of the business.

They can engineer the fans themselves to be more quiet. There are also air flow cooling strategies as old as civilization that would be far less noisy. It's just cheap to have such noisy shit. . . and illegal.

They need to fix it or remove it, obviously they failed in their previous attempts but that's not an excuse to not fix the problem.

You love your EV, You love Joe and the Democrats, you love the over populating of America and you love all that increased heat from increased generation and use of electricity and charging stations for charging your EV. Now you will have the heat day and night 24-7 because your EV has to charge at night, so why are you complaining about it? You got exactly what you wanted.

Uh no. If you're going to make a class of vehicles illegal, gas powered vehicles should be illegal b/c they harm to entire planet with climate change.
