I went a different route as it wasn't working for me either. I built the three bombards and the barracks but then started upgrading the far right until it was Tesla with 2 overcharge. Then I upgraded the middle bombard to Tesla with 2 overcharge. I then built another bombard below the middle one where he has the archer and upgraded it to Tesla with 2 overcharge. I kept my hero, any ranged hero works (I used the ice queen) just below the middle bombard as far left as possible (in-between where he has the archer and the bombard) but still on the right road. From this post the hero could hit the enemy on the left as well as enemies from the right once they went around the curve and were in range on the straightaway. Once I had the three Tesla to overcharge level 2 I started building 2 sharpshooters with the one shot one kill upgrade one in the top left and then one in the bottom right. This helped knock off some bigger enemies like yeti, troll champions, and sons of the queen. I then started filling in the mage towers keeping them the same level until I alternated between stone elementals and teleport upgrades.
