They say to talk calmly to a grizzly bear if it charges you to calm him down. What do you say to 1000 pound Grizzly charging you?

I had one charge me once in 1992 in Alberta while fly fishing. A real charge where he ran up onto the railway tracks I was on and made 100 yards in what seemed like three seconds. He skidded to a halt about 10 feet from me, head down, ears back. I threw my brook trout right at him and he let me live. I slowly backed away and then when out of sight, ran to the car and drove straight to the pub. Was the best tasting beer I've ever had.

I'm amazed at how many videos like this show people stubbornly standing on the trail and trying to get the bear to give way or turn around. This person's first response was to yield the trail to the bear. Smart. The bear wants to walk on the easy path instead of the brush, just like we do. It is a prohibition of blasphemy, specifically, the misuse or "taking in vain" of the name of the God of Israel, or using His name to commit evil. Exodus 20:7 reads: "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (KJV).

I had an encounter with a couple bears just like this young lad had.
The bears ran off as soon as they saw me. Big mistake because it triggered my predatory instinct. I couldn't control myself, I just began chasing the one bear lagging behind the other, leaped onto his back and ripped his neck clean off his shoulders. Usually that'd satisfy my primal urges, but seeing the other bear continue to runoff kept me in the heightened state so I quickly got off the first bear (now dead and bleeding out) to chase after the second much larger and quicker bear.
He gave me a good chase, zigzagging away on a dime...would have lost me off his trail too had I not decided to make a hail mary leap landing right in front of it. You should have heard the shriek of fear it made...which was yet another mistake because at that point the shrieking nose only agitated me into becoming more aggressive. I wrestled that bear right to the ground, got him on his back and that's when I tore up his soft underbelly.
This was all before the Go Pro & Smartphone era, so neither of the bears had any footage for me to grab & upload for you guys to see.
I can tell you this though, after eating about 2000 pounds of bear that week, you couldn't pay me to even look at another bear for the next two months!

Incredible the unpredictable predictability in the nature of wild animals! Like a couple large house dogs just checking in on the mysterious creature in their home. Very well executed on your part sir. Just like a house dog they sensed your relative calmness in the face of their unique awe inspiring power. Seeing you as no threat due to your perfect execution in allowing them the trail and speaking calmly in a consistent tone, regardless of what is said. You allowed them to remain calm and invoked no need to hone their predator or territorial instincts. Also God bless you ran into a couple happy healthy bears because a desperate old bear can't be near as good for the chances of a safe encounter. Though there are SO many circumstances that lead to safe and unsafe interactions between human and bears in the natural world. It can almost be overwhelming breaking down all of it. So once again I want to congratulate you on one of the most amazing experiences I believe this world can offer. Being that you come away safe and sound from such a close encounter. While doing everything right I can tell you must be educated in the matter to some degree. Good on you my brother. You just may have extended your life into the glory years!!

Tiger Legend this was actually the second charge in about 12 hours. This was hiking out to meet the plane picking us up. I was hiking the first pack out alone while my wife and friend finished breaking camp.
The night before I got caught out in the open and couldn't step of a trail. I was forced to stand my ground. All I could do was chant "DON'T RUN! DON'T RUN! DON'T RUN! "
That one charged to within 15 feet when I finally let out the most primal roar and it skidded to a stop 15 feet away. I remember my only thoughts being well that's the end of my training. I knew to stand my ground. Now what do I do with this?

    • @TheTigerLegend777
      @TheTigerLegend777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Danny Google - Wow my god, that is incredible. Well for starters without video evidence or a ton of detail it's tough to speak much on this second encounter. Though I will say for some reason the second bear you encountered at some moment felt the instinctual urge to charge for whatever reason you may or may not have intentionally incurred yourself. Male and Female bears may invoke a charge for many different reasons. Of all the instinctual urges that cause bears to charge the most undeterrable reason being the female bears maternal instincts to protect at all costs when her cubs are nearby. Generally, if you are able to identify a bear as female with cubs nearby the best thing to do during a charge, would be my least favorite method of survival in the world, but a necessary evil in this extreme case when there are no possible ways of a clean escape. Which is to curl up into the fetal position and protecting the back of the neck with your hands. Basically playing dead. Given the fact that generally most unarmed humans shouldn't even engage the willing thought of tussling with the extremely formidable weaponry the bears dawn in their otherworldly strength, claws and jaws. Given that female bears have been known to fight even at times to the death to protect their cubs from larger rival male bears. So if at any moment a nurturing female bear charges at you the last thing you want to do is make yourself appear to be any formidable threat in an all out brawl to protect her young because then she may not take it easy on you with just a few sniffs, nibbles and swipes of the paw before she and her cubs move on. A few more reasons a non breeding female or male bear may charge is to assert dominance, attack prey, may be frightened and feels cornered, sick and delirious etc. There may be many more reasons as well that scientists haven't been able to understand yet. Though truthfully most of the reasons lie along common sense for living creatures but especially for a wild animal these are totally understandable when we enter their home. So some of the best options you have assuming unarmed when a non breeding female or male begins a charge is to throw your hands above your head and yell in the most aggressive primal way a humans vocal chords can generate. (Which you did!) Depending on distance you can stomp your feet forwards or two foot jump stomps. Just be unrelenting in aggression and noise. Not ALL of the time but generally if it's not a desperate bear and still has it's wits about it then it should move on from this strange aggressive creature and go on to live another day if the charge was provoked by an easier deterrable instinct like some mentioned above. Also I mentioned in my previous comment basically the nature of reality from our perspective alot of the time is unpredictable predictability and that truly reflects itself in nature everywhere. So taking in as much factual information on this stuff and past events is truly the best way to formulate a well balanced opinion and the ability to react properly and think less, if God forbid I or someone else was to find themselves caught up in a life threatening situation again.

Great reply. Not sure I would have immediately conceded to a Mom w/cubs, but you're right. If she's willing to fight a large, male bear to the death to protect them, then why even try to stand up to her for any reason? Just protect your vitals and maybe make it out alive. Thank you. I'll be solo hiking in Glacier next month and my biggest fear is running into Mom w/cubs, because she is just as dangerous as a male who sees you as prey, but at least w/the male, if you are left to fight, he may abandon if he thinks you are too formidable. Mom just doesn't give a shit and wants you neutralized, and playing dead is neutralized, unless you are like the Mom Grizz in Yellowstone, who developed a taste for human. Then you have no choice but to fight, but I guess you would decide that if she actually began "feeding" on you and inviting cubbies to join. I can't imagine. That happened to a young woman out in Russia. She was attacked by Mom w/cubs in tow. Mom did not relent (although the girl may not have played dead), the girl was able to reach her Mother by phone to tell her that she was being eaten by the bears. They managed to miss vital organs and arteries for quite some time, the Mother got another call a little less than an hour later and the woman was still alive but said she no longer felt pain. I cannot imagine the agony.

@@dannygoogle3788, didn't he end up following the larger bear though? Even if it was the smaller one it didn't seem like he even waited for it to be that far away before he began to follow it.
No negative judgment on how cool and collect he was in those moments of uncertainty, but after they each walked their seperate ways, my instincts would have been to put as much distance between me and those bears as possible by allowing them to each walk away from me while I stayed put. The last thing I would have thought to do was to immediately follow a bear that I had just encountered in the forest after it turned and walked away from me. I may have misunderstood the situation but that's what it looked like had happened from my point of view.

you kept your composier well which im sure helped a lot,you said they wouldnt let you bring your bear spray on the plane but isnt there somewhere near where you landed to purchase some, the first bear where distracted by the bear behind it were concerned with it and that helped you also, the fact is bear spray will rarely work on a charging bear but it is better than nothing, the second bear wanted to attack he had his head down he was up for a fight which is why the first bear ran off i would say you were lucky lol and you took a big risk following the second bear down the trail you were pushing your luck there that may cause him to turn on you

Punitive ...Had similar incident take place ..rushed up on me
From the side ...way to late to defend ...4 feet away she huffed twice stood up and she blacked out the sun ...just a wall of fur..
She shoved me back with both paws in a swift motion..
I went ass over tea kettle..on near level ground on my side.
Knocked my wind out bad ..gasping for air...thought I was done for....looked up ...nothing there..stayed still ...
Still nothing...few minutes later slowly got to my feet..
    Still nothing no sounds.
Got back to the edge of the road
still nothing ...then I finally see her
300 yrds away starting to traverse the distant hillside with 2 young cubs in tow.I am alive for only one reason ..because of her ...
When she went over the hill I realized where we all were at the time...I without seeing them at all had got between mother and cubs as evidenced by the tracks they left.
    But in a triangular setup.
I will never know why she did that
my innocent intrusion into her space warranted much more of
a reaction or mauling to idle the threat.
    Im lucky to be here
Thanks to her mind set at that moment

This is one time. It should not be taken as a rule. Trust me. It is much like the unpredictability of people. You never know their mood.
