Masti Venkatesh Iyengar,Writer, Interviewed BY Prof. V.Seetharamaiah On 26th Feb 1969

Maasthi Venkatesha Iyengar (6 June 1891 - 6 June 1986) was a well-known writer in Kannada language. He was the fourth among Kannada writers to be honored with the Jnanpith Award,[1] the highest literary honor conferred in India.[2] He was popularly referred to as Maasti Kannadada Aasti which means "Maasti, Kannada's Treasure". He is most renowned for his short stories. He wrote under the pen name Srinivasa. He was honoured with the title Rajasevasakta by then Maharaja of Mysore Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadeyar.
He published his first work, Rangana Maduve in 1910. His last work was Maatugara Ramanna, from 1985.[4] Kelavu Sanna Kategalu (Some Short Stories) was his first notable work in modern Kannada literature. Maasti also crafted a number poems on various philosophic, aesthetic and social themes. He composed and translated several important plays and was the editor of the monthly journal Jivana (Life) from 1944 to 1965.
A prolific writer, he wrote more than 123 books in Kannada[4] and 17 in English, over the course of seventy years. He won the Jnanpith Award in 1983 for his novel Chikavira Rajendra. The story was about the last Rajah of Kodagu.
He died on his 95th birthday in 1986. Since 1993, an award in his name, the "Masti Venkatesha Iyengar Award" is presented to well-known writers from Karnataka.[5] His house is located in Basavanagudi area in Bangalore.[6] His house, located in Maasti village, Maluru Taluk (Kolar District) has been converted into a library and maintained by the Government of Karnataka.[7] Masti Residential School was started in his memory in 2006-07, at a nearby location.[8]
ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ ಅಯ್ಯಂಗಾರರು (ಜೂನ್ ೬ ೧೮೯೧ - ಜೂನ್ ೬ ೧೯೮೬)-ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಸಾಹಿತಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಎಂಬ ಕಾವ್ಯನಾಮದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದರು.
ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಆದರ್ಶ. ಎಂಥ ಕಷ್ಟ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಅವರು ಜೀವನವನ್ನೆದುರಿಸಿದರು. ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿದಂತೆಯೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪೋಷಕರಾದರು. ಜಿ ಪಿ ರಾಜರತ್ನಂ, ದ ರಾ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆಯಂತಹವರಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಆದರ್ಶರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ೧೯೧೦ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ರಂಗನ ಮದುವೆ ಎಂಬ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಸಂಗ್ರಹದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಅವರು ನಿಧನರಾಗುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೆಲವೇ ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ 'ಮಾತುಗಾರ ರಾಮಣ್ಣ' ಎಂಬ ಕೃತಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಅವರು ರಚಿಸಿದ ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ೧೨೩.
ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣಕತೆಗಳು, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು, ನಾಟಕಗಳು, ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಗಳು, ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕೃತಿಗಳು, ಅನುವಾದ, "ಜೀವನ" ಎಂಬ ಅವರೇ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ಸಂಪಾದಕೀಯ ಲೇಖನಗಳು, ಕವಿತೆಗಳ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ, ಕಾವ್ಯ ಸೇರಿವೆ. ೨೦ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆರಂಭದ ಕಾಲ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂಥ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಭಾಷೆಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ ಕೆಲಸವಾಗಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ರಚನೆಯ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡರು.
ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆಗಳ ರಚನೆ ಅವರು ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ. ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಎಂಬ ಕಾವ್ಯನಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ನೂರಾರು ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದರು. ಹಲವಾರು ಕಥಾ ಸಂಕಲನಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ರಾಜಾಜಿಯವರು ತಮಿಳಿಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದರು. ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಇತರ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಅವರ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕತೆಗಳು ಅನುವಾದಗೊಂಡಿವೆ. ದೂರದರ್ಶನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಕತೆಗಳು ಅಭಿನಯಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟà³
