Doctors is a really noble job but I don't understand why the schooling system for medical students are so deranged. Why the terrible pressure and the unhealthy sleeping habits? And when you do become doctor the hospital system is still as deranged. If I'm dictator I would overhaul the whole system.

I grew up as a pretty smart kid and as a result, everyone thought I would become a doctor. I got accepted to every Ivy League school I applied to. But I realized in college that I also valued learning something new everyday and understanding "the why" and these are not valued when practicing medicine. I chose engineering and now work in consulting. I do not make $180k. But everyday in my job, I solve problems that matter and make an impact in the world. I am happy.

    Nice video!
I'm a brazilian med student and I really noticed this focus on 'what' and not 'why'.
I try, then, to study the latter on my own, but there is not a lot of vacant time. I accept this, because there is no other way to do it, but this frustrates me a bit... or a lot haha.
But I think studying med is the best decision I have ever made. No regrets!
    Thanks for the great message.

“The career matters less than the people it attracts, and how much I have in common with those people.”
I’ve come to that conclusion recently, and I couldn’t have put it better.

I agree with caring more about the why than the what. I always have so many questions that remain unanswered. and the education system has been just as frustrating for me as it was for you, probably more for me.

Im from sri lanka so we do MBBS , I can bet 1000$ that we have the worst internship in the world, I went in and then quit one month after internship, then was diagnosed with depression and GAD, with meds depression got better, finished internship. Right now im working as a doctor in low stress job, i gag whenever i see a medical book. I was a great student in high school, should have gone into engineering but at that time i did know what i wanted, and what my strengths and weakness are. Right now im exactly where you are, feeling healthier, better and trying to figure out what I actually want to do...

I'm only in my 4º semester in med school in Brazil and I feel everyday the pressure to be more productive, I feel bad because the obsession with the journey of "personal development", like you said, actually doesnt't make me happy. However, when I try less, I feel horrible, especially when there is so much competition inside the classes. I still love this career, so I think I'll have to learn to deal with it someway.
Furthermore, I can relate a lot with so many things you said, for example the reason you chose medicine, just like you, I also like to feel needed, useful.
Thanks for this video! Wish you the best!
    Kisses from Brazil!

Hey, I'm still in high school and I want to be a physics medic. Based on what I saw, all I can say is that this is going to be tough but I am sure that I'll be able to pursue my dream and be really helpful to medical science. I'm telling you this because from now I already feel the pressure of the expectations of the others around me and I know that this is going to be worse in the future, however, if we think more about our goals than other's validation we' 'll achieve way more than we can expect. So, girl, I think you are doing the right thing by choosing to deal with the stress and keep on after your dreams since you may have noticed it's the best for ya. God bless your path. Kisses from another proud Brazilian

Thank you so much for sharing! Productivity is such a double edged sword, and it’s definitely super difficult to only have two choices - feeling really bad or feeling a little less bad. I wish there was a one size fits all solution that we could all use to feel happy with how we are spending our time.
It’s certainly really hard especially when you feel this competition all around you. As hard as it is, though, I’m confident that you’ll figure out a way to make a fulfilling life out of this career that you love. You got this!
Sending you all my best wishes from Canada!

"working with people who don't always necessarily want to be helped"
i don't want to be a doctor (7 year med school is my main reason, but I do like the "why"'s as well as helping as well) but that line hit
I'm much younger than you and I've always enjoyed helping people but I've learned and accepted recently that I can't help everyone in my life and not everyone is willing to be helped, so all I can do is wait for them to get better. it's tough but I have strong faith

Left medical school. I also agree that medicine teaches the "what" more than the "why". But also it feels like they treat the "disease" rather than the "patient". If you know what I mean.

if it’s something you’re interested in, I still think it’s a great career. you get to help make a meaningful difference for people, and with regular and flexible hours, the work/life balance is very much in your control. the video is not a critique on the career as a whole but more an explanation of why it’s not a good fit for me.
I’ve gone into research, and I’m working on a PhD right now :)
